tCup is a conceptual hot beverage cup made of ceramic and wax that morphs and conforms to your touch as the heat of the cup gradually melts the wax. It was inspired by the concept of object obsolescence, which is the state of being which occurs when an object is no longer wanted even though it may still be in good working order.
I wanted to create a product that captures the life span of a product through a gradual destruction that slowly creates a beautiful object, dictated by it use.
While the objective is that cup embodies obsolescence through a slow degradation, the process is just that, slow. As the heat of the cup and your hand interacts with tCup it creates a beautiful form that is autobiographical of the objects use. Like a fine leather briefcase, it's elegant form gets more beautiful and personal with age.
The Wax Saucer also transforms slowly as it is used. The heat that is radiated through the cup will gradually leave soft impressions into the wax saucer, building beautiful graphic patterns that are unique to its prolonged interaction with the user.
While the concept behind tCup is rather bold, its form is clean and minimal, allowing it to blend nicely with its environment. Making it both a functional product as well as a stand alone decorative piece.
While tCup is branded as a "tea cup," it can be used to enjoy any of your favorite hot beverages; tea, coffee, cider, etc…
tCup is comprised of three parts: an elegant ceramic cup, a wax insulation band and a wax saucer.
The ceramic cup will be manufactured in small batches using slip casting production methods, which will be produced locally in Chicago. The wax insulation band will be cast directly to the cup, and the wax saucer will be molded separately, both wax processes will be executed by myself.
tCup is available in an elegant all white, or a special edition BLACKED OUT version. The standard white cup will be produced using a slip casting method, and the wax will be casted by me using a silicone molds. The special edition BLACKED OUT version will be slip cast in black dyed porcelain, and the black wax will be casted by me.
- Your backing will help cover the cost to have the ceramic cup manufactured, as well as the cost to produce the wax parts, packaging and shipping.
Level 4: The "DEVILLE" Edition tCup
Includes one White tCup with a white wax insulation band, stylishly paired with one black wax saucer.
Risks and challenges
Risks would include possible time delays in relation to manufacturing the ceramic and wax parts. Since I will be casting the wax parts myself there could be unforeseen challenges while producing these parts which could cause delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
