Bluegrass represents one of the most American, down home, traditions of American musical culture. From Bill Monroe to the Steep Canyon Rangers, bluegrass has been a staple of our culture.Through this campaign, we aim to preserve these grand traditions and bring about a new work focused on introducing new audiences to the bluegrass choral world and beyond. Following the acclaimed success of The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass, dynamic duo Chamberlain and Barnett are teaming up again to bring you a follow up masterwork- Mortals & Angels: A Bluegrass Te Deum. Here's your opportunity to be a vital part of the commissioning and creative process.

Partially commissioned by DCINY, this work will receive its World Premiere at Carnegie Hall on January 25, 2016. Featuring a classical chorus of 300 voices including a treble choir, this new work aims to employ the traditional bluegrass style within the context of classical structure. The text will include direct passages from ancient scripture and contemporary prayer.

DCINY’s commission has already set this project in motion and has generated a portion of the $25,000 total needed to bring this project to fruition. However, we need your help to not only ensure its completion, but to also help introduce a new audience to bluegrass as we endeavor to push the boundaries of American roots music.  The funds raised here along with DCINY's underwriting will cover the $25,000 needed to create, write, compose, orchestrate, and publish this new work.

Risks and challenges

It’s a challenge and a risk to merge two wildly different musical genres: classical choral music and Bluegrass into a cohesive whole that will entertain the masses and inspire new generations to claim both genres as their own. Chamberlain and Barnett have done it before with the remarkable World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass.

Now we begin afresh. Can we do it again, on a different sacred theme? The work is already scheduled to premiere in January 2016, but it’s not yet written, and must be orchestrated, published and printed before rehearsals begin. Rehearsals will bring that final collaborative element: choruses from around the world to bring the piece to full life.

And, DCINY is accepting auditions now from interested choirs. If you are part of a talented organization, or know of one, and would like more information about how to join this incredible opportunity, please go to http://www.dciny.org/bluegrass-2016.html.
