Zion Theatre Company is kicking off its fourth year with an amazing season at a couple of theaters in Utah, but we need your help to give it the quality attention it deserves! We have a minimal goal of $6000 (if we don't make that number, then we don't get ANY of the donations), although we have a larger stretch goal of $10,000, if we can make it. Funds raised will be used to help offset costs of the theater rental, costumes, sets, props, paying directors, etc.
-- Huebener by Thomas F. Rogers: This classic play tells the heroic true story of young Mormon teen Helmuth Huebener and hid friends in Nazi Germany who must stand up for their beliefs, even when the entire Third Reich--and even a few members of their own faith--are against them. Dallin H. Oaks said, "[the play] dealt with a subject that tugs at our hearts and reminds us of the complexities of the life we live.”
-- Manifest by Mahonri Stewart: A world premiere play by national award winning playwright Mahonri Stewart. World mythology comes to vivid life in this tale of a Man and Woman who are travailing a dangerous world and use the power of Story to comfort and prepare themselves against the coming storm.
-- Identity Crisis by James Arrington: This world premiere play by popular playwright and Utah theatre personality James Arrington brings a new comedy about a woman whose multiple personalities puts a strain on her love life!
-- Servers by Mahonri Stewart and Nathaniel Drew: A world premiere musical with a script by national award winning playwright Mahonri Stewart and music by the Salt Lake Pops Orchestra's founder Nathaniel Drew. The intersecting lives of servers at a Mexican restaurant are explored in this play that examines the humor, desperation, and vibrant heart of people who are only in a job because they just "gotta get by."
Although we can't give an exact budget at this point, until we have more details about which venues, directors, etc. we'll be using, in the interest of transparency, here are some of the costs usually associated with our shows that the Kickstarter will help defer, and where your money would go to:
Theater Rental: ZTC does not have our own space, as of yet, so renting performing spaces has been our biggest cost. Our most recent spaces have charged between $1,500-$2000 for our typical two week run.
Costumes/Props/Etc.: Our talented costumers have made miracles with very limited resources, but costuming has still been a major cost for us in the past, especially for our period pieces. With the majority of our shows, especially since we have the tendency to love period drama, we have spent anywhere from $500 to $2,000, depending on the show and the costumer. Thankfully, we have at least a couple of modern plays this year, which will make it easier on our costuming needs, but shows like Manifest and Huebener will still have major costuming needs, so will once again be a major need.
Sets: This is an area where we think we have very much lacked in the past, and hope to make a better priority this season. Paying a set designer/builder and for materials for sets will be a major priority this year, especially if we make it past our initial goals and go into our stretch goals.
Director: Because of the time commitment and effort involved, we pay our directors at least a little bit, based on their experience and our resources.
Actors: Depending on the needs of the show and our resources, we usually can't pay our actors, so we've often been dependent on the passion of those involved. If we can reach into the upper echelons of our goals, we would love to be able to at least start paying a number of our key roles.
PR: Posters, programs, art design, etc. are a consistent need for every show.
Royalties: For those shows that haven't been written by Mahonri Stewart (who, thus far, has not collected royalties, although hopefully that, too, will someday change), royalties have been a major cost. The Hobbit; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; and Persuasion have all come with royalties attached in past seasons, and Huebener and Identity Crisis will have royalty needs for our upcoming 2014 season.
Ticket returns from the shows will defer (and, we are confident because of our recent progress, eventually exceed) these costs to the point that such requests for help will be unneeded in the future. In the meantime, your help allows us continue to make spiritually, intellectually, and morally grounded shows (in addition to allowing you to claim our cool prizes!). Risks and challenges
Theatre is a risky business! There is a lot of cost, a lot of labor, and a lot of dependence on finding the right play that reaches the happy medium audiences are looking for (See the "Economic Transparency" section above).
Fortunately, those of us at Zion Theatre Company have gained a lot of hard earned experience in putting up spiritually uplifting, intellectually challenging shows. Having put up over 15 shows in over 2 years, we have the background and the practical experience in knowing the challenges we face and how to overcome them.
