Brilliant Instruction from a Known Expert
The content of these posters is a wonderful daily practice developed over years of instruction with hundreds of pregnant women in the classes and workshops of Nicole DeAvilla's Prenatal Yoga Academy.
The Daily Dozen as this series is called is a distillation of what Nicole has found works to help expectant mothers to remain strong, flexible and centered through the exciting and demanding changes related to childbirth. Her expert instruction and sure calm voice comes through in this clear and easy to follow program.
According to Dr. Shayna Mancuso, board certified OB/Gyn in practice in the Chicago area, "This is a fabulous prenatal yoga poster! Nicole DeAvilla, creator of the poster, is an extraordinarily experienced prenatal yoga teacher. The Prenatal Yoga Academy poster follows standard prenatal yoga recommendations. It is a valuable resource for pregnant women.”
Chart Format and Content
There are two sizes of poster to choose from. Each contains the exact same information, however, they are formatted differently. The larger poster is a 24" x 36" horizontal. It is intended for hanging on the wall and it is the one featured in the video. The smaller version is 18" x 24". It is intended for floor use placed next to your yoga mat. To present all the information in a readable size on this smaller paper, we put all the instructions on the back side and reminder images for easy reference on the front side.
On both versions each of the 12 poses has 5 sections of information. A How To section with clear instructions. A Cautions section to help you know if this pose is right for you. A Benefits section that identifies the good that will flow from doing this pose. A Tip which gives you inside info that Nicole has learned from her deep experience with this series. Plus an affirmation which helps to time the pose and focus your mind in healthy and beneficial ways.
There are also 15 overall Prenatal yoga tips which Nicole provides to help you to navigate the changes you will experience day to day and over the length of your pregnancy. Besides giving you some idea of what to expect these tips make it possible for you to keep practicing safely and continue to be as strong, flexible and balanced as possible.
Why a Small and a Large Version?
The Small Version - Floor Chart
The small 12x18 inch version is perfect for keeping near you as you practice. The instructions are clearly laid out on the back side and reminder images are clearly laid out on the front. This version is also available laminated, for durability and easy cleaning.
This small version is great for putting at the head of your mat to refer to as you practice and to take with you when you are traveling. For instructors it can also be used as a handout during classes or a nice graduation gift at the end of a series or workshop.
The Large Version - Wall Chart
The Large 24x36 inch version is great for referring to at a distance. It incorporates large images and all the instructions found on the small chart appear in much larger type. For those who are framing it an unlaminated version is available. 24x36 is a standard frame size so ready made frames are often available for this item at a modest price. For those who prefer not to frame a durable easy to clean laminated version is available as well.
The wall chart version will be a great conversation piece in studios where prenatal yoga is taught, in doctor, doula and chiropractic offices and a useful addition to the yoga rooms of pregnant women everywhere.
Why a Kickstarter?
I run a small yoga supply company, www.yogalifestyle.com, that has been around for over a decade. It started with me selling one yoga poster which my teacher had created. Yoga posters are still an important part of my business, though now I sell a lot of bolsters and other gear and books as well. At one time I had a great prenatal yoga poster from a teacher in Australia. It was a steady item but not a big seller and my supplier discontinued it about 8 years ago.
I particularly liked selling a
prenatal poster because this is an important niche to support and people
were really grateful when they found it. I loved supplying something
of value to expectant Moms and people who love them. I have been
looking for a replacement ever since that one became unavailable.
About 3 years ago I was at the Symposium for Yoga Therapy and Research (SYTAR) and I had the luck and pleasure of meeting Nicole DeAvilla. At that time she was on the first Accreditation Commitee of the International Association of Yoga Therapists. Nicole is a published author and as you know by now, a prenatal yoga instructor. Nicole was on the Yoga Alliance committee which created the standards for prenatal yoga schools and the training of prenatal yoga instructors. Not only does she teach yoga for expectant Moms and trains prenatal yoga teachers, but when I met her she was working on workshop material on yoga during pregnancy and already had developed the perfect content for home practice. The Prenatal Yoga Daily Dozen. 12 modified yoga postures designed specifically to address the needs of pregnant women.
What ensued over the next couple of years was each of us expressing interest in developing this idea into a poster series and not really nailing down the details, since we were both busy with lots of other projects. Last year at SYTAR we each vowed to take this on seriously, figured out who would do what and now the posters are ready for printing.
This is where you come in. Though I think this is a
great item and I know the content is exactly what pregnant women need, the tricky part is marketing it. I don't want this
poster to go the way of the last one. Which sort of poked along till I had to discontinue it. To make sure I am reaching my target market I am
asking for your help. Please, please, please if you know someone who will benefit from this poster let them know about it. If you know yoga
teachers who could use the small poster as a resource, or a studio who
would want the large version on their wall, please make sure they know
about it now. Other organizations who might want the small poster in
bulk could be hospitals with prenatal programs, or planned parenthood offices
or doulas, midwives and obgyns. Shops that cater to Moms and Toddlers might like it as well. I can't reach all of these people
effectively. I need you to help me spread the word.
I have 30 days to find approximately 100 people to help me get this project off the ground and ensure its continued popularity through word of mouth. I am counting on you to launch this valuable series out into the world. You have my gratitude for your help.
Special thanks now goes to Kino MacGregor who has offered a pledge sweetener to everyone who pledges! Each supporter will get a free month at Kino's OmStars Yoga Channel, where they can learn about advanced, intermediate, beginner, therapuetic yoga and much more!
Risks and challenges
The main risk to this project is that I have misjudged the market and the support we can expect from both the prenatal and yoga communities. If we do not reach our goals I will have to reassess whether it makes sense to produce these posters and how to proceed.
Once my goal is reached however, I have longstanding relationships with printers and laminaters who can do the work I need done. They are quick and good at it and produce other items for me on a regular basis.
As to shipping we ship about 100 items out every week and though 100 more all at once will slow us down a bit, I'm sure we can work it into our flow and get it done in a week or two. It will be a bit like the Christmas rush but in June.
