About this project
Hello, we're Quentin and Dan (the androids from the video). Today, we'd like to share Scroll & Codex, an ancient, leather-bound scroll and scroll case that brings elegance and a touch of the fantastic to your games. Codex transforms into a dice tower with a twist of its base, and Scroll unfurls into a personal rolling tray in moments. With a host of customizable wood, leather, and art options, each Scroll & Codex is crafted to be a unique, timeless relic transported straight out of your game and onto your tabletop.
Help us bring Scroll & Codex into the world, and together we'll change dicetiny. We know some of you are thinking about the Holiday season, so scroll down to learn about our Holiday Gift Package. As always, if you have any questions, we are at your disposal.
In dire need of magical vellum? We got you. At every tier, you can choose from an array of options to customize your Scroll. Start by exploring which pledge level has your ideal combination of wood. Then make it your own by choosing your leather and the art on it. Finally, add a new Elderwood feature, the flourish, which decorates the sides of your Scroll and comes in Ocean, Lotus, Flame, or Mountain.
Scribe Reward - Maple on Cherry
Acolyte Reward - Walnut on Purpleheart
Scholar Reward - Maple on Leopardwood
Archivist Reward - Any Two Woods
Codex is thunder in your hands, it's a breeze over a mountain spring, it's sunlight in your beard. As with Scroll, start by selecting the reward with your favorite combination of wood. Next, you'll choose your favorite leather and art to go with it. For some tiers, you can go one step further and customize the cap art, too! See the bottom of our Kickstarter to learn more about how Codex works; it's a mobile home for Scroll and it transforms into a dice tower!
Apprentice Reward - Cherry and Maple
Alchemist Reward - Purpleheart and Walnut
Artificer Reward - Leopardwood and Maple
Summoner - Any Two Woods
Exclusive Cap Art
Foil and Leather Toil Forever Together
Customize your adventures with the perfect leather and foil. For each Scroll and each Codex, pick from onyx, sandstone, lapis, or crimson leathers with gold, silver, bronze, ochre, or navy foils. Foil on leather creates a vibrant, classic look made using a 100 year old pressing technique. Help us hit our stretch goals so we can add even more options!
Art on Leather, Nothing Better
Choose from any of our signature art packages at every reward level for each Scroll and each Codex. Every image is etched onto a magnesium die, and then 15 tons of force combined with heat and quick fingers lets you emboss your favorite pattern onto your Scroll & Codex.
Finish With Flourish
Every Scroll comes with your choice of flourish along its sides. Choose a bias-relief style that accentuates your Scroll just so. From mountain peaks to raging oceans, Scroll is quest-ready and adventure-prone.
Wood Is Good
If you pledge for Archivist, Summoner, or Oracle rewards, select nearly any combination our wood selection to comprise the base and accent for each Scroll and each Codex. We say "nearly" because Wenge sliced flourish-thin turns into a hail of deadly splinters and releases the miasma of ennui. It still looks highly attractive as the base wood for Scroll or Codex, though.
Cap Art Customization
Available only when you pledge Summoner, Oracle, or Mystic Plus Cap Art (I & II), detailing the end-caps of your Codex adds a final touch of magic. All other tiers receive complimentary Celtic knot cap art, or the Blank Slate look (your choice!).
We're excited about the possibility of growing Scroll & Codex, and if we hit our stretch goals we'll be able to add a bevy of bonuses! As a change of pace, our first two stretch goals are timed, too!
Need a gift for the Holidays? Scroll & Codex are enchanting gifts for the inveterate gamer. They’re personal, delightful, and functional all at once. Although Scroll & Codex won’t be delivered by the Holidays, you can still give the target of your affection the Elderwood Gift Package, which includes a custom order form so we can craft their Scroll & Codex exactly to their specifications.
To give the Gift Package, when the Kickstarter campaign wraps up you’ll have the option on your survey to denote you’d like the Gift Package instead a direct order. Your Gift Package will arrive before December 7th if you answer your survey before November 15th. The Gift Package is only available in the U.S. Scroll & Codex delivery wont start until after the Holidays.
We dedicate the same patience, care, and tenderness to Scroll & Codex as we do when making gifts for our friends. Because we use living materials there is natural and beautiful variation between each one, making your Scroll & Codex irreproducible and unique.
We start by hand-picking lumber at our local yard, then we delicately sand, polish, and finish it until it’s nigh obsidian-smooth under our thumbs. We craft the patterns and parts using laser beams, and then complete assembly by hand to give them just the right mix of precision and art you deserve. Each Scroll & Codex is wed to a natural piece of soft leather, and we use a 100 year old pressing technique to emboss each with foil that gives them the appeal and elegance of old work done well. Foil press contours to the geography of the leather below it to create an organic flow.
With Scroll we’ve created a new overlay-style of flourish along its sides using layered wood. We want your rolling tray to travel with you in your mind’s eye as you crit them critters. With Codex we’ve made it possible to appoint runes, art, and patterns on the caps to fulfill the promise of a cylinder barely containing the arcane energies within.
How Do Scroll & Codex Work Together?
When Codex is empty, twist the base to transform it into a dice tower; it's magic (school of transmutation) meets the mechanical, steam punk and high fantasy.
Don’t think chucking dice into a tube to watch them come rocketing out is particularly satisfying? Codex isn’t just a dice tower; it’s a giant, pretty, water-sensitive cylinder. What CAN’T you fit in there? Codex can hold:
- a rolled up character sheet
- 50+ dice
- 3.5 lb of confetti
- 16 pens, pencils, and markers
- hope and woe
Naturally, Codex serves as a Scroll case as well. Pop the top and then don't stop... until Scroll is out. Then you can stop. We guess.
Once Scroll is liberated, setup and takedown is easy as falling.

Who the Flip We Is?
We're Quentin and Dan! Quentin is passionate about robotics, education, and gaming. You may also stumble upon some games floating through the ether, such as Happy Salmon, Fast Flip, or Pass the Pandas, co-designed by Quentin and his friend Ken. Dan is the proud owner of a beard which he sunbathes daily. He is a citizen of the Netherlands (not a euphemism), was born deaf (he got better), and smells nice (he's good at smelling).
We got our start when Hex Chests went viral-ish and last year we did Spellbooks, which helped us grow into a slightly larger company that still makes Hex Chests and Spellboopies. Huge shout out and limitless love to all of our past and future backers; y'all's the best!
Risks and challenges
Last year, we grew from a 250 square foot office and two guys to a 3,000 foot warehouse and our family grew by half a dozen. This year we’re better equipped than ever to tackle a Kickstarter, and we’ve dedicated months to perfecting and refining the process of Scroll & Codex so we can hit the ground running.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
More easily than in the past, that's for sure! We are using Backerkit this time around, which will let you add items to your pledge when we release surveys at the end of the Kickstarter.
Yes! You'll have to increase your pledge by the value of the other stuff and you'll get to tell us what you want in the Backerkit survey.
