About

Why?

We love cooking as much as eating, but often cooking ingredients are packaged in jars which can be very difficult to open! Tools for opening jars are not always easy to use and are never designed to be beautiful. That is why the Swirlid represent a revolutionary step in jar openers, it is designed to be effective, practical and beautiful.    

All my designs - mostly related to cooking and food - are getting a close inspection by the most critical consumer we have ever known - my soon 80 year old mother. Countless designs of practical tools and foodstuffs have been closely examined by her and failed her tests.

With the Swirlid, however, she is asking me when we will have them manufactured so that she could buy one! We cannot describe our excitement!

The Swirlid is a revolutionary lid opener that will change the way you think about lid openers. Hand opening jars require significant amount of upper body strength to exert sufficient torque to overcome both friction and the vacuum within the jar. Similarly, conventional jar openers simply provide a vice to grip the lid but nothing else. 

Opening a jar using your bare hands or a conventional jar opener still means you can only utilize one arm’s strength. The Swirlid changes all these. The Swirlid is fixed to a surface and its clever “curves” grip the lid of the jar regardless of its size and allow you to either use one arm and “macho” the lid open, or use both your hands to grip the jar. Opening a jar with the Swirlid requires far less force than a conventional opener, you can even be frying something off with your other hand!

Everyone will benefit from a Swirlid at home but I envision the elderly or those with injuries or joint discomforts to derive the greatest benefit from this design. The simple act of opening a jar may be taken for granted by most, but for many, it can be a daunting task.

Swirlid does not take up kitchen drawer space or bench top space and it will never get lost since it is mounted in your kitchen.

I believe that innovation is the most powerful key to a more prosperous world. By deploying this cool invention, life will become a little more convenient and a little more fun. The prototype of the Swirlid is machined from a solid block of aluminum, as is the wheel.

Swirlids will be provided with a logo machined in the base plate. Optionally, a personal engraving can be chosen. If a personal engraving is chosen, the engraving will replace the Swirlid Logo.

Why is your generous support needed? 

In order to produce the Swirlid, some pressure injection molding tools need to be manufactured. Dedicated tools are also needed for the manufacturing of the hub of the wheel and the base plate of the Swirlid. The manufacturing requirements for the molded aluminum and the molded thermoplastic version of the Swirlid differ and thus tools are required for both.

The tire and the inner strip of the Swirlid are manufactured from ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber. This is a very durable and strong material. It can withstand cooking oils well and is therefore excellent in use in kitchen appliances. 

A bearing is positioned around an axle, around which the wheel can rotate smoothly. In the image above the axle is covered by the hub of the wheel. 

The base plate and the hub of the Swirlid are made from either ABS or metal. ABS is a strong durable polymer, generally used in kitchen appliances. The various metals provide a broad choice for matching your specific (kitchen) style.  All of these materials are designed for a service life of at least 30 years. So your Swirlid will last!

Options

There are three options available for the Swirlid: 

1 MACHINED FROM A SOLID BLOCK OF METAL

Swirlid can be made from a solid block material (aluminum, stainless steel, titanium or brass) with a polished or brushed surface finish. The hub of the wheel and the base plate will be machined from the same material. The rubber tire is molded separately from an ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber and clicked in the curve.

2 PRESSURE MOLDED TWO COMPONENT THERMOPLASTIC

Swirlid is also available in a range of colors. The bearing of the plastic molded Swirlids will be a slide ring of a durable ABS grade thermoplastic. The two component pressure molded Swirlid will have an EPDM anthracite grey rubber inner strip molded onto the material of the base plate.  The wheel will be a two component molded part. The hub is an ABS grade thermoplastic in the same color as the base plate, the tire is also an anthracite grey EPDM.  

3 PRESSURE MOLDED ALUMINUM

Swirlid is available in brushed appearance or available in the specified powder coated colors. The bearing of the molded aluminum Swirlids will be a durable slide ring of nylon.

Technical design and progress

The design for the Swirlid is ready, as is the design for the molds.  The molds are yet to be manufactured and that is where we need your contribution. In order to start production of the Swirlid we need your help! 

The prototypes are machined from a solid block of aluminum. The metal hubs for the metal Swirlids will be made on a lathe and the rubber tire will be injection molded separately and fitted around the hub.

Alternatively, the wheel can be made of an injection molded thermoplastic. For this, a two-step injection mold needs to be machined. This tool will first mold the hub of the wheel in a first molding step and will, in a consecutive step, mold the elastic tire of the wheel. 

The wheel could have been off shelf bought, but we have decided that a specially designed wheel is far more desirable from an appearance point of view.

Since the tools, needed for the thermoplastic Swirlids are dedicated for two component injection molding, the tools each comprises three mold portions. Two for the solid ABS plastic parts and one additional for the EPDM elastomeric portions, being the tire of the wheel and the inner strip of the curved surface.  The rubber lining on the curved surface will be an injection molded rubber part, fitting in the curved rim.

During the design phase, significant effort has been put in calculating the forces exerted on the separate parts during use of the Swirlid. In particular, the shaft of the wheel has to withstand considerable forces. The shaft base needs to provide sufficient strength to withstand these forces exerted on the shaft during use. 

With the machined metal Swirlids, a radial ball bearing will fit snugly around the shaft, and will be connected to the shaft by staking the distal end of the shaft. With the molded Swirlids, the shaft diameter required to provide sufficient structural strength. It needed to have a diameter thus large, that it didn't allow enough space for a ball bearing. For that reason, the molded Swirlids are provided with a slide bearing instead.

The curve of the base plate follows a fibonacci curve, with the center being the rotational axis of the wheel. This design means that caps are experiencing the same angle of the curved surface irrespective their size.

Packaging

The packaging will be a cardboard box, with a vacuum formed interior provided with a soft flocked velours covering.

Risks and challenges

We have identified a number of risk and challenges for this project. The first is that the mold design needs adaptations after manufacturing. This is addressed by allowing for adaptation in the time schedule, such that if these adaptations are needed, the project deadlines can still be met.

Another risk can be the fluctuating raw materials price. Both the thermoplastics and the aluminum prices are in a downward trend at the moment. This is addressed by reducing the number of items in excess. We have built in a safety margin of numbers of products to be ordered for the given total sum.

The production partners are three individual companies, each for the specific materials in question. Should one partner have difficulties, we can find alternatives for his assignments. The designs of the Swirlid are thoroughly calculated on forces acting on the materials but in the worst case scenario that a particular design fails testing, we will replace it with an upgraded design before shipment.

Despite all the care and attention we have put in, a Swirlid may have undiscovered production flaws. Any Swirlid that fails for whatever reason will be replaced. We do the utmost best in providing you with high quality product. Should however anything be wrong, please let us know! Please bear in mind: You, as a daily user, are the most important person in the continuous improvement of our product!
