Want to see Sydney through the eyes of those affected by homelessness? To help connect people affected by homelessness with the wider community through their art?
There is a simple way you can help our cause: Purchase our 2017 MySydney calendar, which showcases the artwork and stories of those involved.
We are seeking funding to print and distribute 1500+ calendars and each purchase helps grow this project. Our aim is to raise $6,000 AUD to fund the first installment of the printing and production costs of the 2017 calendar.
This year our photography competition saw 95 people affected by homelessness take pictures over 5 days. The photos are exhibited, voted on (both by critic photographers and the public) and compiled into the 2017 MySydney calendar.
In July and August this year, 95 FujiFilm single-use cameras were handed out to people impacted by homelessness, with the theme "My Sydney". Each participant was given 5 days to take pictures of what was meaningful to them. We did not set a specific theme other than the title of "My Sydney" as we wanted the artists to show us what that meant to them.
A panel of judges distilled 1100 images down to a final 20.
The final 20 images are currently being exhibited in Newtown at Lentil As Anything, King Street, until 30th October 2016.
We are inviting the public to come along and vote for their favourite images. The exhibition features a photo wall that includes 3 images from each photographer who participated in the project.
It is a great opportunity for the public to meet and interact with the artists, who will be showcasing their work.
We feature the top 13 images as selected by the public at our exhibition in the 2017 MySydney Calendar. The calendar will also feature stories about each photographer and their thoughts behind their image. This serves as the primary platform to link the artists and their work to the wider community.
Café Art Australia has several goals:
•To empower people affected by homelessness, through their art and through deepening their connection with members of the wider public they don't normally interact with.
• To tell the stories of individuals who are affected by homelessness,
• To raise awareness of the general public to challenges experienced by those impacted by homelessness from the personal perspective of the participants.
What we do with any surplus generated:
In addition to printing and distributing calendars, we intend to pioneer an initiative launched by Café Art in London. This will involve hanging the photography created as part of the MySydney project in cafes, enabling members of the community to purchase these images, with the proceeds going back to the artists.
We also have plans to offer photography training programs to participants.
Here are the 20 photographs currently framed and exhibited at Lentil As Anything, Newtown. 13 of these will feature in the MySydney 2017 Calendar:
Risks and challenges
The risk is primarily not raising enough money to fund the calendar printing and therefore not reaching the wider community.
Other risks have been well mitigated - ensuring we respect the participants in terms of disclosure of names or pseudonyms where requested. Ensuring photos of other people come with consent.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
