Want to see Sydney through the eyes of those affected by homelessness? To help connect people affected by homelessness with the wider community through their art?
There is a simple way you can help our cause: Purchase our 2018 MySydney calendar, which showcases the artwork and stories of the homeless participants. We are seeking funding to extend this project into next year and to start growing it beyond Sydney.
This year our photography competition saw 100 people affected by homelessness take pictures over 5 days. The photos are exhibited, voted on (both by critic photographers and the public) and compiled into the 2018 MySydney calendar. We did not set a specific theme other than the title of "My Sydney" as we wanted the artists to show us what that meant to them. A panel of judges distilled 1100 images down to a final 20.
The final 20 images were exhibited in Newtown at Lentil As Anything, King Street, during August 2017. We invited the public to come along and vote for their favourite images. The exhibition features a photo wall that includes 3 images from each photographer who participated in the project. It is a great opportunity for the public to meet and interact with the artists, who will be showcasing their work.
We feature the top 13 images as selected by the public at our exhibition in the 2018 MySydney Calendar. The also features stories about each photographer and their thoughts behind their image. This serves as the primary platform to link the artists and their work to the wider community. We invite homeless photographers to purchase the calendars from us at half price, thereby earning a supplementary income selling them at markets and in Sydney.
Café Art Australia has several goals:
•To empower people affected by homelessness, through their art and through deepening their connection with members of the wider public they don't normally interact with.
• To tell the stories of individuals who are affected by homelessness,
• To raise awareness of the general public to challenges experienced by those impacted by homelessness from the personal perspective of the participants.
What we do with any surplus generated:
In addition to printing and distributing calendars, we also hang A3 images with stories in corporate boardrooms, thereby spreading awareness. We have begun filming a documentary featuring the lives of those involved, that should go further to raising awareness and confidence.
Here are the 13 photographs that have been selected by public vote for the 2018 MySydney Calendar:
Risks and challenges
The risks of the project are that it is unfunded, or that we are unable to hand out all 100 cameras in the future. There are also challenges selling a quantity of calendars, as they potentially go out of fashion. We try to engage businesses and the community to mitigate this.
There are risks associated with putting people's work in print and using their names - many of these individuals are at risk, so we are careful to ensure this is the first priority, and we will often not share photographs of the participants or their real name as a result.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
