About

Relevant and Ready

The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics estimates that in 2020, there will be over 1.2 million jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math. However, it foresees only 16% of all Bachelor's degrees specializing in these areas. If we want students to shape their own futures, we need to get them innovating at a much younger age. In the new makerspace at Cecil Intermediate we will faciliate socially conscious project-based learning that asks our students to design solutions to recognized problems and prototype, improve, and present their ideas. From bicycle safety to caring for the homeless to minimizing the noise levels in our cafeteria our students will be positioned as problem solvers.

"Recently, I asked my students what they wanted to be when they grew up as part of a getting-to-know-you activity. My students threw out terms like “civil engineer” and “environmental activist.” You’re probably thinking I teach high school or, at least, middle school. No, these are students in fifth grade. I was astonished to hear that most of my class was interested in jobs in art, technology, and science fields.”

- Lauren, fifth grade Math and Science teacher

Makerspace Potential

Ready to be transformed!
Ready to be transformed!

Pretty drab, right? We need to transform this space into a vibrant center of collaborative learning. As you can see, we need everything from work surfaces, seating, sinks, storage, and lighting to the newest state-of-the-art technology, tools, and art supplies. If we meet our funding goal, we can pay for our essentials: tables, chairs, room dividers, lounge seating, peg boards to display student work and ideas, lighting fixtures, storage cabinets, and basic materials. We hope to equip six mobile carts with prototyping and supplies for creative projects that can move with groups around the room as they work together to solve challenges. We also hope to create a special “ideation” space where students can rapidly brainstorm ideas.

If we surpass our goal we will be able build out our space even more by adding a flat screen TV to project student creations, Chromebooks, laptops, a sewing machine, and a 3D printer. The makerspace will provide our teachers with the room and tools to faciliate the types of group work and design projects that will make our students masters at the engineering process and ready for the future.

Teacher Growth Leads to Student Growth

It’s not just about the space. We want to provide the highest quality professional opportunities for our staff through a partnership with the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. The Children’s Museum brings expertise in making as a learning practice and facilitates hands-on making experiences everyday in their MAKESHOP. If funded, not only will the Museum assist us in designing and completing the makerspace, but also will provide several professional development workshops throughout the year. This support is essential.

Moving Forward

If funded we will immediately consult with the Children’s Museum to finalize the makerspace design, purchase furniture and assemble the space and supplies. We will also work with our facilities management to install a sink, paint the walls, and remove the carpet and consider new flooring. This may take some time. As we work on the space we will schedule professional development workshops, finalize initial learning experiences, purchase supplies, and plan for beginning the new units and projects.

We Need Your Help

We want our kids to achieve greatness through the use of the makerspace and resources, but with that, we need your help. Consider backing our project and share it with your friends and family. With our team, we hope to spark our students to dream big, create a pathway to their future, and, ultimately, impact our global community. We want them to feel empowered and goal-driven. We want to inspire our “children” who inspire us everyday. We want to help them DREAM, DESIGN, CREATE, and DREAM SOME MORE.

Risks and challenges

One challenge we foresee is the ability to maintain high levels of professional development to stay up-to-date with cutting-edge technology and how to best use these resources in a makerspace environment. We are fortunate to have an administration that will help support us in this project by facilitating ongoing training by connecting staff with leaders in the maker education community, sending staff to training specific to makerspace learning, and funding to maintain the makerspace with the most current technology.

We might also encounter challenges as we create our makerspace, whether related to plumbing concerns or paint colors. We are prepared to work as a team to make the vision a reality.
