What is a gay interactive web comedy?
It’s a web series on YouTube, but at the end of each segment it gives you a decision to make.
It looks a little something like this:
The decisions you make determine which segments you watch next, and the fates of our heroes, Brandon and Jeff. There are 11 endings, and in 10 of them Brandon and Jeff break up. In one ending, they stay together.
There are plenty of interactive videos on YouTube already, but this one is a little bit different. First of all, it’s gay. So we like that.
But it's also a different kind of adventure. The show is about Brandon and Jeff hanging out in their apartment with their friends. Instead of decisions like "Do you fight the dragon or do you go into the labyrinth?" you get to decide what to have for lunch, whether to play video games or play dress-up, whether or not to do team couples therapy with your friends ... and with every one of these hard decisions, the fate of Brandon and Jeff's relationship is on the line.
Do we really need another gay web series?
Yes. Of course we do! There will never be enough.
But what makes this show different is not only that it's an interactive comedy, but that the main character is HIV+ and the story isn't about AIDS. We're tired of seeing every HIV+ character in movies and TV show facing a tragic drama about their HIV status instead of seeing people living with the virus the way most people do: living complex exciting lives that most of the time are affected more by the misconceptions surrounding HIV than they are by the effects of the virus itself.
So Brandon, the main character, is HIV+ but the show is about aliens and drag queens and couples therapy and a little bit about what it's like to cope with HIV, but mainly just what it's like to cope with life and aliens and drag queens.
Is this a web series or a movie?
In a normal web series, episodes are released a few at a time and can be watched independently. For this interactive show, all the segments are interrelated and they all get released at once. Each time you watch, you watch different segments based on the decisions you make.
Like most YouTube web series, this show is being released for free on the internet. (We are not allowing ads on the clips, because we think it's too intrusive on the experience.)
So in some ways it's a movie, and in some ways it's a web series, and in some ways it's like an online game. You can call it whatever you want, we certainly do.
Who is making this show?
Eli Rarey (writer, director) is an independent filmmaker who has made numerous music videos, shorts, and video installations as well as the feature film The Famous Joe Project which was funded on Kickstarter in 2012. The movie is available on iTunes, Amazon Prime and Vimeo if you want to check it out.
Torrie Gregor (producer) has produced and assistant directed numerous shorts, music videos, and shows for TV and the web. He knows how to make a dollar go the distance, so to speak. He is also performing in Hard Decisions as Arms Akimbo, the anarchist conspiracy theorist. (Spoiler alert: the conspiracy is real!)
The rest of the cast includes Brenden Shucart, James Cerne, Justin Sayre, Mario Diaz, Nadya Ginsburg, Chad Sanders, Deanna Neil, Anthony Bless, Aaron Stella, Kyle Kupres, Ondine Rarey, and Sarah Problem in a dual role as herself and herself without a beard. Follow the links to learn more...
What are you using the money for?
Mostly we are paying for food. I know it sounds sort of weird, but when you have convinced a group of exceptional actors and experienced crew to work long hours for free, it's usually a good idea to provide tasty snacks and at least one hot meal per day. The cast is pretty big, so that is a lot of hot lunches over the course of the whole shoot.
We also need to pay for equipment rental (though our sound guy is working for free, we need to rent his gear) and some technical costs in post, such as hard drives and booking a sound mix.
The rest of the money is going to costumes. Because gay. Thank you.
Tell me more about those rewards!
You want a downloadable MP3 of the song "Feeling Pozitive" in the video above? Check.
Full shooting script as well as access to behind-the-scenes stills and footage online?Check. Get that.
We also offer a downloadable digital version of Hard Decisions, but we warn you this is the non-interactive version of the movie. Essentially it's just like a regular feature film, except that it keeps going back in time to show you what would have happened if the characters did something else. It's sort of awesome actually but it is not interactive.
But what is on the DVD? The DVD includes behind-the-scenes material as well as multiple versions of the movie, including multiple endings as well as an interactive version that lets you make the choices along the way using your DVD menu buttons.
And what about that poster? Sure, get a poster. And if you go for any reward tier $100 and up the poster will be SIGNED.
And what about that t-shirt? Limited edition, available only through kickstarter. And if you get the t-shirt or the DVD, you get the poster and access to the shooting script and all the behind-the-scenes footage for free.
Maybe you want to actually own the sexy space helmet worn by James Cerne in the movie. It can be yours! But hurry, only one space helmet is available. This was custom-made for us, there is no other sexy space helmet like it in the universe.
What if you want something personal? Something that says, yes, we speak to you, personally. How about if we speak to you personally? A personalized video shout-out from the cast of Hard Decisions!
But maybe you want more. Maybe you want to be in the movie. If so, you have to be able to get yourself to our downtown LA set during the shoot in March. But your dream can come true! Contact us if you need more info about this reward.
Do you want to watch the movie with us? We want to watch the movie with you. And we want to give you a co-producer credit on the movie for your contribution. So make it happen!
WHAT DO YOU WANT? Tell us, we're ready to add more rewards. You are our backers! We're doing this for you.
How else can I help?
Spread the word! Just by watching the video and directing more traffic to this site you've already helped us. Kickstarter is a crowdfunding campaign, so the more people check us out, the more crowd we have to fund from.

Risks and challenges
Making a movie is really hard, and it gets even more complicated when your movie has eleven endings. However the Youtube technology that allows for branching storylines has already been tested by projects before ours. Our greatest difficulty is going to be finding a way to produce this with such a limited budget. Fortunately we all have experience managing tight budgets on other projects, so we feel confident to bring this thing all the way home.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
