About

"Trash Canyon: Year of No Waste" is an investigative documentary exploring our psycho-spiritual connection to waste and consumerism.  As a volunteer trash collector living on the Big Island of Hawaii, I see first hand the amount of waste created every day. So, I've committed to a #YearOfNoWaste. Any trash I make goes into a mason jar. I am sharing the chronicles of this journey through social media platforms, like Instagram. @trash_canyon_

But the story runs deeper. I hope to explore first, the Hawaiian Island's relationship to trash. For instance, The Big Island of Hawaii used to be 100% sustainable. Now, 85% of its' produce comes from other places and is shipped in. Where does all the waste from this packaging go?

I also recently uncovered on the DMV website that since 2012, an average of 1.2 million cars a year are shipped to the Hawaiian Islands. But the average person moving to Hawaii, stays for only 2.5 years. They leave, but their cars don't. There's hundreds of abandoned cars all over the Big Island. They not only act as mosquito breeding grounds and take away from the natural beauty of Hawaii, but they are also potentially toxic for both the land and our water. I'm interested in creating resources for the Puna District to help create solutions to alleviate this situation. I am calling this side project, "All Cars Goto Heaven."

In addition, under the direction of Scott Laaback, Director of Landcare at Kalani (the largest retreat center in Hawaii), I am heading up a Waste Management Team for Flow Fest (Puna's 4th Annual and biggest festival). I will help maintain the grounds of the festival at Green Lake, to help preserve the land and ensure no waste is left behind. At this festival, I will have a table with my mason jar, explaining about my project. I will also have a sign-up sheet for people interested in pledging either a Day, Week, or Month of No Waste. I hope to inspire a movement for other's in the Puna District to commit this April to an entire month of no waste.

But this story is much bigger than Hawaii. This is a global issue! So, I plan to travel back home to my roots in the suburbs of Virginia, to spend a month with my family, who own and operate a Putt-Putt Fun Center. Together, we will create dialogue around this topic. Maybe I can even convince them to go waste free with me for a week? I imagine grocery shopping waste free with my mom, who we call Patty Wagon, will be a story in and of itself. It's my hopes by taking this project back to home, that I can touch upon the role family and tradition plays in our relationship to consumerism.

I then want to take this story to New York City, where I lived and worked as a tarot reader the last 6 years. I saw first hand the amount of waste created from consumerism, even in the spiritual community. While in New York, I hope to host a weekend retreat centered on my tarot, astrology, and yoga practice, but this retreat will be entirely Waste Free. I hope to shed light to how choosing to live more sustainably is more of a political and spiritual act than burning sage and chanting 'Om' ever will be.

Please join me on this journey! If you have any thoughts or ideas for projects. Or if you would like to participate or join in on the dialogue, let's Talk Trash! This is just the tip of the iceberg, and I am excited to dive deep into it with you all!

Risks and challenges

My biggest challenge for this project is the funding. I currently work as a volunteer trash collector, and make no money through this avenue. But I am passionate about fully immersing myself in this topic, and lack of money will not stop me.

Another challenge for me is I have no experience making films, although I made this 2 minute clip, and I have found that I have an eye for visual, an ear for editing, and I have a BFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. So, I might have just uncovered my new passion, making films! Feeling really excited to learn more about this creative process!
