About

What is Deception?

Deception is a trick-taking card game similar to Euchre or Bridge. But as the name suggests, this game is all about deception. Not only do you have to deduce which team the other players are on, you also have to mask your own identity through calculated plays.

Why Try This Game?

Blurred line between friends and foes

You've played enough games where you know who’s on your team. Now it’s time to try having to figure it out. You will decide whether or not to trust your friends’ innocent acts. You will gain your opponents’ trust knowing full well that it’s all part of the plan. It’s time to play as Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty at the same time.

Incredibly simple rules, but impossible to master

The game centers on simple rules of trick taking and point accumulating, but the real game is built upon the personality and psychology of your players. To truly play Deception well, you must predict how your friends will strategize. Everything from logical deduction to card counting can be leveraged.

A game that evolves with you

Will you learn to bluff and trick your opponents with cunning plays? Will you learn to give out points to others for the greater good? As you and your friends develop more advanced tactics, you will all have to adapt to each other.

What Are The Rules?

Deception can be played with 3 to 5 people, but is ideally played with 5. Each card has an associated point value. Face cards have values of 2, 3, 4, 10, and 11, while other cards hold no points. Players try to win tricks and receive the point value of cards won. The game starts with a bidding phase where players express how many points they think they can take. The winner of the bid decides the trump suit by calling a specific card. The player with the called card becomes his partner for the game and they will play against the other players. The caller and his partner will combine their earned points at the end of the game. The calling team wins the game if they've reached the target bid.

The thing is, nobody knows who the partner is except for the partner himself. Since no table-talk is allowed, players will have to deduce the identity of others through plays. This is where deception becomes important. The players that weren't called (and thus are on the same team) need to figure out who the called partner is, whereas the partner needs to maintain an innocent appearance. As you develop trust for other players during the game, you could decide to give them points to contribute to your team's final score.

We know people who have been playing this game during lunch for years. The deception aspect makes each game unique and keeps the game interesting.

Here are the specific game rules for Deception. As the campaign continues, we will be posting tips and strategies on how to really master the game!

Risks and challenges

As mentioned in the Kickstarter video, all design work is complete. One potential obstacle we might encounter is in printing. We've identified several companies that could print and ship the cards to us and have tried a test deck with each of them. We will try our best to get the finished product into the hands of our backers as soon as possible. However, larger orders may take longer than expected to print.
