Why are you on Kickstarter right now?
Because you’re a shimmering gem of a human! And…. because you’re either a friend, or family, or a lovely stranger from the internet, who has heard that Pilar (that’s me) has been selected to attend the AADK Residency in Murcia, Spain, for the month of June.
Yes! June is quickly approaching! Which is why I am reaching out to all of you. But before I ask for your assistance, let me tell you more about the residency.
What is a Dance Residency?
A dance residency is typically a designated space and period of time, where artists apply and are invited to develop new work, alone or with other artists. AADK is a program that not only brings in dancers, but musicians, writers, researchers, scientists, and more. People apply from around the world, and I am incredibly honored to be selected as the only American artist for the June session.
What will I be doing for a full month?
I will be creating and performing a solo work titled Hasiera. In the Basque language (Euskal) it translates to begin; to start, but is used as the word for home. My mother’s family originated from the Basque Lands of Spain, which is inspiring me to create a work that focuses on family histories, origins of home, displacement, and beginnings. I am also interested in playing with ideas of matriarchy, and how a woman’s body relates and navigates structures of a household.
I will be creating the sound for my work as well. I plan to bring recordings from my home in Philadelphia, and take recordings of experiences in Spain, to blend and mold a soundscore that connects two places of existence for me.
Dance is a form of story telling; expressions of ideas, and for me it is how I understand concepts that feel too big to articulate in just words. To have 30 whole days with no distractions, will allow me space, time, and energy to create something that has depth; roots that will bolster me to create future, larger work.
Why is this residency important for me to pursue?
An international residency is an opportunity for me to perform and create with artists from around the world. Participating in an international residency is like getting invited to a film festival. People who had no idea who you were, see your work and hear your name. A residency is a credential. It is a notable achievement that can help an artist get more performances and eventually more funding.
Why do I need your help?
Residencies cost money, not only to attend, but also the expenses that accrue while not working for a month. AADK is funds 60% of the residency, which leaves me with the remaining residency price, airfare, and living expenses. I am paying for the airfare on my own and am asking you wonderful humans to assist me in the rest.
Residency price = $795
Housing = 1 month at $122, 3 nights at $50, Total $272
Living costs = 33 days, at $30 a day, Total of $990
Transportation = Train from Madrid to Murcia at $29, Train from Murcia to Barcelona at $70, Total of $99.
Total Goal = $2,200
Any contribution you give, will allow me to fully engage with this residency. And I am thankful for the fact that you're even looking at my page, which is like a vulnerable journal entry about my dreams. So, THANK YOU!
I have collaborated with a few other artists on some of the rewards, so check out their work below and support more than one artist through this Kickstarter!

Risks and challenges
The challenge that comes with this project is getting me to Spain, which you are already helping with by being here and sharing this within your circle.
The future challenge will be to maintain momentum after Spain, and pursue performance and choreographic opportunities upon my return to Philadelphia.
I would like to view this Kickstarter as a way for my community to hold me accountable in maintaining that momentum.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
