SpellBound is a therapeutic tool that uses augmented reality technology to help children cope and engage with medical treatment. SpellBound is used by pediatric specialists to improve procedural compliance and reduce trauma for their patients.
How does it work?
SpellBound uses the mobile devices (iOS and Android tablets and smartphones) you already own to turn children’s print items (books, cards) into 3D, interactive experiences. Using the SpellBound AR app, hold a mobile device up to one of the books or cards and see characters, animals, and scenes emerge in 3D, with animations, music, and sounds.
What will the 3D Charlotte book experience include?
- A magical 3D experience on every page
- Story narration and fun sound effects for multi-sensory enjoyment
- Interact with the book and characters - touch and tap on Charlotte and her dog Otto to see what happens
- Learn how to be mindful and find your inner calm with Charlotte
- Much, much more!
Why do we use Augmented Reality?
To create joyful smiles like that!
Augmented reality is technology that adds digital experiences to the physical world and allows you to experience them at the same time. Pokemon Go is an example of augmented reality. Because augmented reality allows the patient to stay engaged with the physical world visually and aurally, we feel it is the perfect choice for therapists who need to keep constant contact with their patients.
Augmented reality is one of the most immersive technologies out there today, which is why we use it for our tools. SpellBound is so immersive that a 2-year old will sit still during sleep study prep, a child freaking out before surgery can be calmed, and a brain aneurysm patient can be motivated to participate in physical therapy. SpellBound is the only age-appropriate, therapy-focused, digital solution that uses augmented reality technology that can be used in many hospital departments and procedures.
What are people saying about us?
“A lot of people are really impressed when I bring these [books and cards] out and show them what they can do...Parents think they’re great...sometimes I feel like the parent wants to push the kid aside and play with it themselves.” –- Jamie, Occupational Therapist
“Using your app with your book is enchanting!” –- Stephanie, parent
“Whoooaa!” –- Jack, 7-year-old
Charlotte and the Quiet Place:
“Parents and children who read this gem of a book will get a glimpse into the possibility of inner quiet and peace. Our world so needs this!” —Tara Brach, PhD, Radical Acceptance and True Refuge
“I can't express how much I love this book! It's beautifully written and illustrated. As a child who grew up in a loud, crowded house that was chaotic and boystrous, this book speaks to me in a magical way. It gets me ;-). I bought the book for my daughter and she loves it, but it's our book.” –- Audrey, parent
“What child hasn't felt overwhelmed at times by our buzzing blooming confusing world? This is a great book for showing children that there is a quiet place within all of us. I was lucky to hear the author read her book to a small group of children who immediately "got it." I felt calmer just hearing it.” –- Jordan, parent
For iOS devices, the SpellBound app requires OS 7.1.2 or later. For Android devices, it takes Android 4.1 (Jellybean) or later. It also requires 1 GB of total RAM capacity on the device, since it takes around 300 MB to run. In general, devices introduced after 2012 should work. The RAM is the most important consideration in terms of device specs.

Risks and challenges
The Charlotte and the Quiet Place book has already been published by an independent publisher, so the printing and distribution shouldn't be an issue. SpellBound is simply adding the augmented reality (AR) experience to go along with the story. We've created AR experiences for two different children's books (and several other products) in the past, so we're not worried about producing a high quality experience for you.
That said, there are always some uncertainties and risks associated with any project. For us, creating the 3D models of the characters and scenes takes the longest time, but with this funding we can put our best modelers and animators on the job.
If we run into delays, we will make sure to keep everyone informed and involved.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
