I'm Brandon Weygant of Purple Cloud Entertainment, and I'm here to put you on G.A.M.E.
G.A.M.E. is a manga style comic set in our fictional Purple Cloud Universe. Fellow co-founder Tyrell Cotton and myself have been working on G.A.M.E. in all its various forms (it didn't even start off with a video game theme) since high school. We thought it would be fun to make a story starring us, and subsequently a lot of our friends, and it most definitely has been.
One day, after getting out of school, our heroes Rell, Brandon, and Dave rush down to Jorge's Arcade to participate in a fighting game tournament. At the completion of the tournament they are escorted to the back to beta test Jorge's new game machine, which brings our heroes to the digital world of Jorge's creation. Immediately in tune with the world as if they have finally come home, our heroes jump right into the action on their quest to become the best!
After the beta test, every player joins a 3 player team to journey through the game with. The Graphical Avatar Manifestation Engine does a scan of each individual and assigns every player a unique power in game based on all their attributes. With no two powers a like in this artificial world, every mission becomes a unique challenge that each team must learn to master on their own and quickly learn that there is no one right way to complete every quest.
The #1 thing that always brought Tyrell and myself together was talking about anime and comics. We have spent a quarter of our lives easily watching, reading, and talking about everything we came across. Eventually the conversations became less like "This series is amazing" to "It's good, but there is so much I would have done different to make it better." Then one day, one of us just blurted out "Why don't we make our own stories then?" Purple Cloud Entertainment was born.
For almost a decade we have worked on G.A.M.E., and it is so detailed in our own heads that we can talk about it among ourselves as if it’s a fully developed television show already. We identify so much with our characters that whenever we talk about the story we tell the other one "How about you do this, or I do that" rather than identifying the characters by name (definitely a product of casting ourselves as the main characters - I highly recommend to any aspiring story teller to try it once, it's really a unique experience when you can't always separate yourself from your character!) Filled with everything any comic fan will love - super powers, great characters, action, and a story line that just won't quit (it has unlimited continues!) - G.A.M.E. has everything in it to take the world by storm.
There have been lots of setbacks, but nothing has ever been able to stop us completely, and now we've finally hit that breaking point. It was put up or shut up time for Purple Cloud Entertainment, and the decision was a unanimous "PUT UP!" We went and recruited an artist, a man by the name of Zsolt Acs with amazing talent, shook off our personal issues setting us back, began expanding the introduction, scripting out the whole story, finalizing character designs, building a website, and anything else we had to do to get everything rolling. And this is just the beginning, the difficult part starts now.
Currently in development, but facing challenges. Zsolt is doing a magnificent job, but he is doing it by himself and needs a team before we can enter full production with regular releases. That's where Kickstarter comes in. All of our individual resources are already tied into this project, and we can't afford anymore artists without further support. For $5,000 we can get Zsolt all the help he would need to get Volume 1 completed. But it doesn't stop there...
Not lacking in confidence in both ourselves and product, the moment we got our first pages earlier this year I suggested to Tyrell that we go to New York Comic-Con. We both work better under a little pressure and with grand goals, and we couldn't think of any better goal than to present G.A.M.E. to such a large and magnificent audience!
I want to stress that the funds we are seeking here are not meant to fund our comic con expenses. Also, we have assembled a small team of writers to develop the entire Purple Cloud Universe, including new and unique shows as we have no interest in being a one dimensional company.
Now, I did work very hard constructing the rewards tier, I hope you all think I did a decent job :). But, by far our largest incentive is offering Volume 1 (and possibly beyond) FREE to everyone. Volume 1 will take the heroes from sign up to completion of the first missions. This offer only applies to on-line hosting, which means you will legally see G.A.M.E. hosted on www.purplecloudent.com and free manga sites all over the internet.
We currently are unable to confirm whether we can offer an e-book version for free, but are sure we can never extend this offer physical copies in a non-promotional setting. We decided this was the best move we could make to help get our story out there to as many people as possible, and we're confident you will be hooked from the beginning!
As for the restrictions in some of the higher level rewards tiers, while there is no restriction on the particular genre you choose, some themes are already in our story and we want to be as expansive as possible in G.A.M.E. The current themes in use are Feudal Japan, Medieval Europe, and Futuristic Alien Spaceship/Invasion.
Here are our goals for over-funding:
- $15,000 - This will cover the publishing costs of Volume #1, allowing us to print physical copies. Depending how well funded we become, we may decide this cost is unnecessary for any free volumes offered and will instead use these funds to publish the first volume we will not be offering for free.
- $25,000 - We will extend our offer of free online hosting to our second volume of G.A.M.E.!*
- $40,000 - Volume #3 becomes free online for everyone!*
- $55,000 - Volume #4 becomes free online for everyone!*
- $75,000 - We will host our entire story through the secret boss fight free online to everyone. The length up to this point is estimated to be between 25-35 chapters, depending if the reward tiers sell. And yes, there is much more story beyond that point.*
*These will be hosted on our website, and free does not extend to any e-books or physical copies we may have published. All goals listed above are estimates that include costs of production, publishing, and the fulfillment of the rewards tier. The $75,000 goal is higher due to the uncertainty of the total length of the story.
A Special Thank You For a Special Person
Thank you to my wonderful and beautiful wife Catherine Salazar. She contributed just about everything to making this Kickstarter project, including making the promotional video you see here and designing our website (which will be launching very soon!). I love you baby!http://kickingitforward.org
Risks and challenges
The two greatest challenges any upstart entertainment company faces are funding and getting people to notice and like your product. Tyrell and myself are already putting everything we have into making G.A.M.E. and Purple Cloud Entertainment successful, and we are hoping this Kickstarter project becomes a positive step toward overcoming these challenges.
G.A.M.E. has seen hundreds of delays on our part, mostly due to life ventures taken, like moving across country, joining the military, and my general disposition towards being lazy. Even through obstacles like these, which impeded the progress of G.A.M.E. greatly, we still managed to keep our vision intact as if we had just graduated high school yesterday.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
