3 Fables, 7 Languages!
My name is Maya. I'm 12 years old. And I would like to help your kids get a headstart for the future! Relive the classics and learn 7 foreign languages at the same time. With the help of my parents, I will adapt 3 fables and make them easier to understand for kids. Each fable will have a different linguistic focus. Together the collection of fables will cover quite a few concepts and expressions in the target languages.
- The Tortoise and the Hare (focus: verbs and numbers)
- The Cicada and the Ant (focus: greetings and weather)
- The Fox and the Stork (focus: food)
Everybody can learn a language
Our goal is to make learning languages easy, fun and accessible to all. We will deliver each fable in two formats: as a free IPad App and via the web. Not only will your contribution make it possible to buy the necessary software, accessories (like a digital pen for my drawings), and hire native speakers, but most important, it will allow us to create and release these fables for free in all 7 languages.
Here's a wireframe mockup to give you an idea for the layout and flow of our apps:
Our Secret Sauce: Bilingual Stories
Each fable will use a bilingual concept of storytelling, where the foreign language is embedded in an English story. Why this method? Because it works! The English provides the necessary context and clues to naturally understand the foreign language expressions.
Why 7 languages? Why not? To be ready for their future, your kids should be exposed to a wide variety of languages. Train your kids to hear and pronounce foreign sounds. The earlier they start, the better (and no, it's not too late for you)!
The languages we will offer are: French, Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, and the 7th language will be chosen by the community (see Rewards section, voting will begin once the project is successfully funded). Each language will feature different speakers to expose your kids to a variety of accents and tones.
Who We Are
Some people say we are a confused family. My mom is French-Italian-Spanish. My dad is French-Vietnamese-American, and I am all of the above! We live in the United States and speak French and English at home. Our family embodies the word multicultural. Spend one day with us, and you will constantly be shifted from one language to another.
We used our bilingual experience to create the 2Lingua method which is at the core of these interactive fables. You really can learn a language by switching from one language to the other, and the most amazing part is that it is fun and non threatening. Basically, c'est naturel!
Thank you for being a backer!
Thanks to J. Kelly for creating the background guitar music, N. Solomon for her enthusiasm, ideas and support, and Toan @ C'ville Coffee for his help in launching this project.
Risks and challenges
One risk is that Apple will not accept the apps in the App Store. We have already successfully created and shepherded two bilingual apps (English-French) through the Apple approval process and therefore feel confident about getting these interactive fables in the App Store. Also, these fables will be released as web apps, hence accessible from a wide variety of devices.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
