About

Synopsis:

It is an empowering novel; it is a conversation starter. It addresses both Homophobia and Islamophobia, it sheds light on both matters through the eyes of the main character, Osama, living in two different worlds. It is a story of unconditional love; it is about the ties that bind a family together. The story offers an insight into the lives of average Muslim families, living in the West, with strong ties to the Middle East.

Osama struggles to define his identity as an Arab, a Muslim and an American. He also struggles to define his own sexual orientation, which ultimately forces him to question everything he has grown to know, and the intentions of everyone he grew to love.

The story explores the lives of Muslim-Americans through the eyes of an American born Arab. It tackles social and religious taboos, individual rights in Islam, and the rights of Lesbians, Gays and Transgender (LGBT) both in the East and the West, and the rising intolerance toward Muslims in the West.

Osama's unique and unusual first-hand experiences transported him between local Gay bars in New York City, and as far as Makkah in Saudi Arabia. It gave him a different perspective on his own life, as well as life in general, and taught him important lessons about tolerance, acceptance and unconditional love.

Osama’s Jihad also attempts to bridge the widening gap between westerners and those of Muslim or Arab origins as it addresses some of the major stereotypes and false media portrayals.

It is a modern day story, it takes place in the 80’s, 90’s, all the way to 2013. Each and every reader will find something to relate to in the novel.

Where the Funds Will Go:

Your backing helps me do two things: it helps me make the book better, and it helps me get the book into the hands of the right readers. I don't have access to resources like those of big publishers, but that's not a bad thing after all! It just means that the constraints are in different places, and that your support is crucial to making this novel a success.

More specifically, your backing helps me with the following:

developmental editing line and copy editing proofreading printing cost of graphics and other design elements registering ISBN numbers paying for the additional costs associated with getting listed in various retailers packing materials and postage.

I'll share the entire process via backer-only update Emails along the way.

What People are Saying About Osama’s Jihad:

"it's a perfectly timed, necessary, eye-opening read that sheds insight into today's most misunderstood culture"

"it's a book about the struggle concerning social norms and rights across two 'thought to be' very different worlds with the foundation being a story about unconditional love"

"A man's journey though life and his sacrifice for his family....there's so much more...religion, respect, expectation, self conflict."
"its a book about learning, exploring, acceptance and understanding of oneself and of family, of cultural divides and..ultimately its about love and respect and how we are all just humans with the same problems no matter our cultural differences."

What Inspired the Story?

A few Years ago, a close friend of mine sent me a Craig’s list Ad. The Ad was titled-- A Gay Arab Man Looking for A Lesbian Arab to Marry.

for some reason or another, it stayed with me. I started to feel the pain of that person who had to live a secret life to appease those around him. I questioned if his search for a wife was an act of love for those around him or was it an act of fear. I imagined myself in his shoes; I imagined my family’s reaction. I questioned the whole concept of unconditional love especially within the Middle Eastern culture and household, and I found it to be a rare commodity.

That is when the characters of the story were birthed. I felt the need to make a change. I felt the need to tell the untold story of millions around the world, who did nothing wrong, yet are considered outcasts of society and within their own homes. The alarming increase of Islamophobia throughout the world, especially in the recent years, also obligated me to equally address this issue in the novel, to further educate others of how multidimensional the culture is, and that was when the name Osama jumped at me.

I am provoking the negative stigma that usually accompanies phrases like "Osama" and "Jihad" in the West, and draw parallel with the same stigma against "Gays" and "Lesbians" in the East, in a story that is nothing more than a human love story.

Risks and challenges

The risks are minimum. The book is pretty much done at this point. It needs to go through editing and printing before you can have it in the palms of your hands.
