About this project
WHAT AM I DOING?
After 30 years of living and working in these United States of America... I am finally taking the plunge and applying for citizenship. It is both a momentous and daunting task (on a personal level)... which I am shooting and cobbling into a documentary.
My hope is to create a piece that is informative, entertaining and perhaps even a little quirky as I document this journey in my life over the next year. (Yes, my life trends toward the quirky more often than not.)
HOW AM I DOING IT?
The challenge is to train the camera on my life over the next year (some shot by me... some shot by others) as I embark on this life altering adventure. The end result will be the documentary itself.
You will also be able to follow this ongoing journey via blog and vlog entries on a dedicated site... as well as via project updates here on Kickstarter.
WHAT WILL IT BE ABOUT?
We all know that life itself (especially but not exclusively mine) cannot be scripted. One never knows what is lurking around the corner. For instance, my application could be denied. (See, the dramatic possibilities in this?)
However, what can be illuminated are nut & bolt answers to burning questions such as:
* What (paperwork, process/steps, etc...) does it take to become an American citizen?
* What does it cost to become an American citizen?
This documentary will also explore:
* What every new American citizen knows that most natural born citizens may not be aware of.
But this is not all just about me. In this documentary I will endeavor to interview lawyers, new citizens, friends, natural born Americans and a myriad of individuals who may (or may not) have something to share on these and other topics.
WHY AM I DOING THIS?
These are interesting and challenging times in America. With all the recent news about Immigration Reform looming, how will this affect those seeking citizenship via a legal process? My hope is to document this slice of life within this particular slice of history. By recording the actual process of gaining citizenship the documentary will provide an insight and appreciation into what it is to be an American in these times.
WHAT HAPPENS ONCE THE DOCUMENTARY IS COMPLETED?
The documentary is slated to be completed in early 2012.
I will be submitting it to film festivals as well as shopping it around for wider distribution. At the moment I am looking at creating nothing less than an hour long documentary... but it could be longer depending on the content I live through over the next year.
Funds for this will go into equipment costs and other shooting incidentals including festival fees to make this project a reality.
Thank you for your kind consideration and support.
Cheers! - marcel
