Greg here. Okay so, first off… thank you thank you to all of you for being so patient for so long. I’m happy to say I can finally share some news and answer some of your pressing questions. Woohoo!!

I’m going to jump right in ...

So...we ARE going to be releasing the game this year!, and we are also going to be opening a closed beta within the next couple weeks for our early-access backers, and we’ll be looking for your feedback! Also, the Nintendo Switch version of the game is just about ready to be submitted for certification by Nintendo, and the other console versions are not too far behind. I’ll give you more details about all of this before this update is done.

You may also find this interesting... going forward Adult Swim Games is no longer going to be our publisher. Instead we are going back to self-publishing, Indie-Style! Adult Swim Games has some other big titles they plan to launch this summer so when Back in the Groove pushed back, we both agreed that it made sense for them to hand us the reigns, rather than taking a chance on this getting pushed back any more. Also I’d like to say how deeply grateful I and all of us here at HNS are to Adult Swim Games. We wouldn’t have gotten this game to this point without them… seriously. Thank You Adult Swim!! (round of applause).

Self publishing….(a moment of contemplation…) ...exciting and a little scary. Thankfully I’ve been in this biz as an indie longer than many of you have been alive (ouch) which means I am fortunate to have ton of knowledgeable and experienced friends in this biz who have been helping with learning and connections. We totally got this! :) By the way you will be happy to know that we also plan on sharing a lot more information with you going forward as we did in the beginning of this project, and we would love to hear from you as well. Nathan (our lead artist) is also now officially our acting community manager.

KickStarter Updates: We will be doing regular updates once a month and mini-updates with fun tidbits and blasts from the past every week or two up until launch …. As well as special updates whenever there is news or announcements.

The Forum: We’ll be reading and responding to this more. If you’re not on here yet and want to be, drop me an email ( and I can add you.

Discord: We have one now! Here is our invite link -- come join us! We’ll be creating a special backer role for people who backed the KS too, so we’re excited for that :)

Social Media & Streaming: We're now on twitter in addition to our usual facebook activity. And hey! We're gearing up to do some regular streaming on twitch and maybe youtube too!
Aaaand we've updated our official website.
You can find those here...

A little more about what you care about most….

We ARE releasing this year!!
Right now we have our sights set on a fall release. We will be making a specific release plan announcements in regards to dates as soon as we have that nailed down. You’ve been waiting so long, we don’t want to give you wrong information until we’re 100% sure. We’ll know these details within the next month or two.

Swapping for Consoles: Many of you have asked about this from the beginning and a lot recently (yes, we do hear you!). It does cost us money to swap (we have to pay platform holders) and we need to make sure we can at least break even - that said we will revisit this question very soon and try to come up with something. I plan to send out a separate update about this.

Closed Beta!!:
We plan to have a 2-week long closed beta VERY soon. (July 5th to July 19th). We will send out Steam codes to everyone who pledged at the Early Access level and up… that’s the $60 tier, which is about 2500 of our backers). We’d love to give you a first look and also need your help with debugging and feedback for game balancing. Any and all comments will be welcome and appreciated. We will be sending another dedicated KS update with all the details on this. We will be asking you to not stream or Youtube playthroughs etc. just yet so we can make a bigger splash when we release. There will be an opportunity for our backers to stream the game before launch.

Thank you again... to all of you, for your patience. We know how crazy late we are compared to what we naively said in the KickStarter campaign. Thanks especially to those heroes among you who have raised your voice with positivity and support, and kept the faith. Game development is a rough biz. I’ve been doing this for 34 years and I still am totally lame at predicting how long things will take. Well the good news is we’re almost out of the tunnel and into the light... and in the end I do think you will be happy with the results. I feel funny saying this, but this game has turned out to be everything I had hoped it would be and even more. It may not be the greatest single player game out there - but I can’t think of a multi-player game that makes people laugh and shout as much as this one. Of course the proof is in the pudding and you are the pudding eaters… so…. I’m looking forward to you getting your pudding and hearing from you. (I managed to say “pudding” 3 times in one sentence! Beat that!) I’m also looking forward to your help and support as we make this final pudding push.

As always...if you have any issues, problems, or requests, feel free to email us, our email door is always open. Nathan is our community manager so he will field email questions and comments in our other media channels. If you don’t hear back just email again…. And if that doesn’t work try my email and shout at me. :)

Did we ever get a final number of how many physical copies of the game will be produced?

I am glad to hear that you are nearing the end of the long ardous journey to get a true Toe Jam and Earl experience into the hands of your fans. I also have to ask a few questions though. I have noticed through the last few updates a lot of Nintendo Switch mention and not so much the other guys. This was originally expected to release for PC, PS4, and Xbox One? I think? It's great that you are able to release on another platform more money for the developers work and more fans get to play the game. I can't help but wonder however if releasing on switch is why most of these recent delays have happened. Nintendo is known for (and Sony and Microsoft do it too but Nintendo has it down to an artform) expecting a simultaneous release for their system no matter how far along other previous versions are to releasing.

Which means if the PC version is 80% complete and the PS4 and Xbox versions are 60% and the Switch version is 25% complete Nintendo REALLY wants you to wait to release until their version is ready to go at the same time. I don't know if this is the case with your particular instance but if it is I would really appreciate transparency regarding this. Businesses are businesses and publishers have their requests/demands so if this is what happened then it happened. But if it did we deserve to know exactly to what extent Nintendo Switch announcement had on the delay of the other versions.

I could be completely wrong I just have seen previous instances where this is the case. I could even be wrong about which company is asking for what delay. It could be any of those major companies expecting/demanding simultaneous releases it could just as easily be none of them. All we ask is that you tell us. This update shows that the Nintendo update is close to going gold and that the other systems aren't that far behind. How is that possible when the PC version started before any of them? I don't mean to be a grouch I am just eager to get my hands on the game you guys have been working so hard on.

Whether you allow swap or not, I will be purchasing a PS4 port as well to support you guys.

please let us pay an update fee to get switched to Switch!

    8. Miguel Martínez on

Excellent news! Thanks for the update! I am glad you are going back to self-publishing.

Are y'all going to have a release party in the Bay? That'd be cool :)

Thank you much for the update! I'd much much much rather have a good game later than a bad game earlier. I read some suggestions of swap fees...I mean, honestly, if I can buy the Switch version for the same price as what I paid for the PC one, that'd be cool with me! Or a swap fee is cool too.

    10. Jeroen on

I'm also happy to pay a fee to swap to a console version of the game.
I only backed a low tier ($15), so no need to make a loss on me. A swap fee is reasonable.
Although I can imagine that the higher tiers may get a free swap.

    11. Jason & Jamie Linder on

You have a strangeneral obsession with pudding...
That being said I REALLY hope something can be done about swapping for consoles, I'm big into consoles and game with my daily and HATE using my computer to game.

Well done for getting this far!!! I am super excited to see what you guys have come up with!! <3 As a lot of others are saying (I have 2 copies of the game coming my way on completion) if I need to pay a little extra to swap for a console version of my wishes for one of those copies, I’ll happily oblige. But mainly came here to shout out my support of your work! It’s great to hear that we’re so close to seeing it release and that it will be a quality work too! (Not always something that happens these days). Just happy to be a part of it, and proud to be a backer! And you guys, should be proud too! Cheers and bravo!!

Regarding console swap, a lot of us have several copies of the game included in our tiers. I'd be content if just one of those copies was for a console. Also... I remember way, way back during the campaign there was talk of no drm. Is that still true?

I'm sure this has been said before on here, but I'd been waiting more than 20 years for a follow-up to the original TJ&E when this was announced. A couple more weeks/months is nothing. Thanks for the updates and the beta!

The issue with Sony EU also exists with MS EU.
The 8bit bloodstained got delayed for this reason

Great to get news. I’ve not been following all the updates, so apologies if this has been extensively discussed, but is there still going to be a Mac version released?

      Todd Lockhart on

Definitely agree that I’d be more than happy to pay an additional fee to switch to a console version. My wife and I bought the original TJ&E when it was released, and it’s still one of our favorite multiplayer games of all time (neck and neck with Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One). Looking forward to its imminent release!

    28. Zombait on

Well this is a turn-up for the funk!
Can I please just ask you to be aware of Sony Europe and it's classification system, a few games I've backed have yet to make a EU release due the language requirements (I think). The Night Trap remaster is one of the biggest still not released here. Also I know Double Fine have had issues with some of their games in the past, Costume Quest 2 for example faced a huge EU delay only on PlayStation. So there is something decidedly un-funky going on with PS Europe.

    29. Patrick Clark on

Happy to hear it and can't wait to see the release! Sorry ot didnt work out with ASG but I'm sure things will look even better for y'all in the future!

I'm skeptical that this will be released in 2018. I've heard there are a lot of hurdles with consoles especially - such as passing certification, getting an age rating from different bodies across regions etc. I'm just guessing, but would have thought they processes would take a few months. Have you factored this into your estimate?

    32. Guy Pattinson on

I happily pay to swap to an Xbox version of the game

Thank you for the update guys. This is all fantastic news. I am sure this game is going to be wonderful and can't wait to get to that beta!

!!!! So happy that we'll get a chance to play early, but especially that it's coming out this Fall!! My sister and I have been waiting to play this together. Thanks to Greg, Humannature Studios, Adult Swim, and my fellow backers!

Agree - I would be willing to pay (a reasonable amount) to get the Switch version instead
