As we approach the end of our Kickstarter, we're releasing more previews for both M&M and Fate Core, and a preview of the Table of Contents for our stretch goal book Aperita Arcana!
What is This?
As players of the Monsters & Magic RPG, we decided we needed a larger variety of monsters to use - so we wrote a bunch up. People on the M&M G+ Group were asking for monster writeups as well, so we decided that putting them together into a book would be a good thing... and then, about two months into writing said book, we realized that with some art, this could be an actual game book....
Sarah Newton, the author of Monsters & Magic, has some nice things to say about us, to help assure you that we're actually up to this! You can also check out our Monsters & Magic Sampler and Fate Core Sampler, giving five of the creatures we've written in each of those systems! Lastly, you can see the current list of creatures included.
What's Monsters & Magic?
Monsters & Magic is a modern fantasy roleplaying game which mixes cutting edge rules mechanics and narrative techniques with traditional fantasy roleplaying concepts. Specifically designed to be used with classic fantasy supplements and adventures with little or no conversion, it allows players and GMs to pick up their favourite fantasy campaigns and characters and bring them to brilliant new life. It’s a game firmly in the “Old School Renaissance” spirit, and works seamlessly with classic fantasy products, new and old. Pick up your favourite old school campaigns, adventures, wilderness maps and encounter tables, those bestiaries, spellbooks, and gazetteers, and revisit them with this new set of rules.

What Are the Rewards?
The Monster Book
This is our initial reward - the one that's already written. As it stands, it has 91 monsters (including sub-entries), is 96 pages long, and has six new player-character races and a section expanding on the system's rules for familiars and animal companions (covering 15 creature types as such).
The Monster Book - Fate Core Version
Our first stretch goal reward, this will have us create a version of the book for use with Fate Core. The creatures will be re-statted in Fate Core. We should be able to re-use the same art.
... and more to come!
We have more stretch goal rewards up our sleeves, to reveal when the time is right! More races, classes, magic items, spells... keep pledging, and you'll see!
What Are Your Goals?
Initial Goal: $800 - ACHIEVED!
At this point, we have money for art - a cover and some interior art. We'll get this, insert it into the layout we already have, finish proofing and revising our current draft ourselves, and produce a PDF.
Fate Core Stretch Goal: $1100 - ACHIEVED!
We put in the additional effort to create Fate Core stats for all the creatures in the book, and integrate those with the existing text to create a Fate Core version of the book.
More Monsters: $1400 - ACHIEVED!
We expand the book, adding another 15 monsters (in addition to any that we wind up creating because of people pledging at the $75 or $125 level).
Pay the Writers and Editors: $1700 - ACHIEVED!
The previous goals pretty much have us here at Ebon Gryphon just breaking even. With this goal, we can actually pay ourselves a little something for the writing and editing!
More more monsters: $2000 - ACHIEVED!
Another 15 monsters for the book!
Class and Race book: $2500 - ACHIEVED!
If we reach this goal, we'll add the Class and Race book for M&M that we currently have brewing to this Kickstarter as a PDF, and add new tiers/levels (or perhaps an add-on) to let people buy it as a physical book.
Spells and Magic Items: $3000 - ACHIEVED!
The Class and Race book grows, adding a selection of spells and magic items!
Fate Core Class and Race book: $3500 - ACHIEVED!
We do a Fate Core version of our Class and Race book (including the spells and magic items)! Classes will be handled using the Profession rules in Fate System Toolkit; races will be done with a mix of those rules, combined with ideas from the Bulldogs! RPG.
Enemies & Allies book: $4000 - ACHIEVED!
We create a book with enemies and allies for M&M and Fate Core!
Company Building: $5000
This one's for us - we get some money for buying some professional software tools for this Kickstarter and our future endeavors, and for things like registering our fictitious name and other legal mumbo-jumbo.
Setting Book: $6000
We produce a setting book for the world of Tathir - the fantasy world that Travis has been using off and on for the last twenty-five years, and from which the named individual monsters in Collectanea Creaturae come! Both M&M and Fate Core stats would be included.
Send Us to a Con! : $8000
Julian and Travis take this show on the road, getting a booth at Origins if they aren't all sold out by then!
... and beyond?
We have ideas for further stretch goals, and will start to reveal them if these start to run out!
In addition to the rewards involving the book proper, we've got a few other things that you can get as addons:
T-Shirts! - $15
An exclusive for this Kickstarter - a t-shirt with a hatching gryphon logo for us, since you guys are helping us get this company started! On the back is another special somebody, that you'll hear more about from us later... he's one of the Big Bads of our setting, should we get that far.
Those of you who pledged $100 or more will get a t-shirt included free! If you want more than one, then you can add it on.
Signed Copies! - $5
For an extra $5, Julian and Travis will both sign a book to you! Let us know what you want us to say, if you want us to say anything specific. Backers at $75 and up will get this included free with their book.
More Books! - $25
Want a second book? We can do that! This is how you can get both the M&M and Fate Core versions in print. Or you can get more than one of the same book. For those of you who are international, if you can get a few friends to order with you, you can save on international shipping!
Make Me a Thing! - $50
Want us to make you a monster, class, race, or spell, but don't want a physical book? Add this on! Want us to make you more than one thing? That can happen too!
How do I order addons?
Right now, just add the amount you need to your pledge. When the Kickstarter is over and we get funded, we'll be sending out backer surveys, which will ask you what the addons you want are.
Who Are You?
Ebon Gryphon Games is Travis Casey and Julian Stanley. Between the two of us, we bring almost 50 years of RPG experience to the table, and have done prior work with Wizards of the Coast, Cryptych Magazine, and Skotos Entertainment. We've won a Merit Award and Honorable Mention in the Windhammer Prize competition for short gamebooks, and Honorable Mention in Evil Hat's "stat Harry Dresden" contest.
Risks and challenges
The book is written - we have a first draft, and a serviceable layout. What the Kickstarter will potentially let us do is buy art, get a professional editor to give it a go-over, get tools to help us lay it out better, and, if we can get enough backing, put out a professionally-printed version.
So, the worst that happens is that we underestimate how much art costs, and wind up with sparse interior art. You'll get the book, and it'll have monsters - there's no danger that we're not going to complete the book at all.
For stretch goals, we have a bunch more monsters on our list, some of them already written up. For the class/race book, we have about a dozen classes and several races written. We don't have any spells or magic items yet, which is part of why that's a much higher stretch goal.
International shipping is a potential problem point, since shipping charges are going crazy. We don't anticipate a huge number of international backers, so our plan is to have the press we're planning to use ship directly to the international backers, since they can do that. We anticipate the most support from Europe. Right now, our printer can do express shipping to anywhere in Europe for about $15. If prices go up, we may have to fall back to slower shipping. We're also low enough to avoid taxes in the EU, as a book.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
