Update 7 (let's make games, not war...):

First off, we added a new FAQ question below our Kickstarter. We think it's important so we're posting it here as well:

Question: Is your game in alpha yet?

Answer: No! We have never said that we have reached alpha, but people are mentioning it all the time. We are in pre-alpha, meaning before alpha. Pre-production has finished, but we have not reached alpha yet.

Here is a wiktionary definition of pre-alpha: "A development status given to a program or application that is usually not feature complete, and is not usually released to the public. Developers are usually still deciding on what features the program should have at this status. This status comes before the alpha version, and is the first status given to a program."

We're unveiling a new vehicle type today, and it's pretty awesome, though remember that you can only use it in the green zone:

Tanks!

Next update tomorrow will focus on giving you some back-story for the world of Areal and we'll unveil another vehicle type. Thanks for reading and check out our first fan-art below! We're supposed to be the soldiers. As for the tentacles, well we're not too sure about what that's supposed to represent... Thanks Ragulin!

Fan art, featuring soldiers and um, tentacles :)

Thank you to all the news sites that have written about our new teaser, and a special thanks to (among many others) Polygon, Gamer's Hell, PC Games N, Load the Game and Geeky Gadgets for reporting objectively and without any personal bias. Even bigger thanks to the 1,000+ people who have backed us so far. We are so happy to see more than 780 results show up when we type in "Areal Kickstarter" on google's news section! We have raised roughly 76 percent of our base goal, so we really are in the home stretch now! We need you, our backers' help, to get us to at least a hundred percent -- all you need to do is talk about Areal with your friends and share us on social media sites. If everyone got just one friend to contribute, then we would go way beyond our base goal. We have made some mistakes over the course of this Kickstarter, but the fact is that we are trying our hardest, and we hope that you'll help us make Areal a reality.

Areal First Person Shooter Prototype Trailer Unveiled By West Games (video)
      https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1577656602/areal/widget/video.html

A quick teaser trailer has been released for the new first-person shooter (FPS) video game called Areal that is currently under development by the game studio responsible for the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, West Games.

West Games are currently running a Kickstarter crowd funding campaign to help fund the development of a new Areal game. Check out the early prototype footage which is not representative of Areal’s final quality after the jump.

West Games explain : “Areal is a new video game that’s being made by senior ex-S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developers. It features a massive and intricately detailed open world environment that is extremely varied and colorful, even though it’s set in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Areal depicts a future where civilization has fallen apart due to an unearthly material called Metamorphite, which eventually spreads, corrupts and infects the whole world. The source of Metamorphite comes from a meteor that impacted the earth long ago, and it is the site of constant conflict and bloodshed.

Areal’s story is not linear – players can choose how their characters act and speak – everything from how you talk to who you kill changes the storyline of Areal. There is no morality system in Areal, so you are free to make choices that you think are best in any given situation, without being blinded and limited by a standard good/evil system.

Ultimately, Areal is the culmination of everything that we want to see from a post apocalyptic game, and it’s something that we can realize with full creative freedom because of the unique platform that is Kickstarter. All we need is your support!”

For more information on the new Areal game for West Games jump over to the Kickstarter website for details and to help with its development.

      @ West Games

So, nothing? I just wanted to clear up a couple of things about the posting of the Official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. link all those times.

    5. Avalanche on July 1, 2014

      These questions are still outstanding.

Re Official Stalker facebook page that you've linked to several times, full conversation further down the thread:

"Do you know if (s)he works for GSC? Where does it clearly state that "they officially represent GSC on certain matters"? I didn't see that. And which matters?"

    6. Avalanche on June 30, 2014

Soooo... are questions still be answered here, as there were a quite a few still left?

    7. Mitchel Pederson on June 30, 2014

EA showed off a few games' pre-alpha states at E3 this year, just to prove they were working on the game. One of the games didn't even have a name yet, but they wanted to show the world that they are working on something. Can't you do something similar?

@West Games: True, a lot of people don't list their entire game's feature/level/event breakdown on Kickstarter, but they don't have to because they couple their announcement with something more than video of an existing game made by someone else. When Kenji Inafune came on Kickstarter to announce he was going to make a Megaman clone he didn't show a bunch of footage of Megaman, he showed off stuff about Mighty Number 9. It wasn't much but it was enough to get people excited and it showed an immediately graspable concept of how the game would work.

You on the other hand didnt do that. You showed off STALKER, and didnt show off Areal. As a result we're all left wondering what you're asking us to pay for, and lets be honest about this here, you're asking us to pay you the money to make a game you want to make. Presumably if we're interested we'll agree and give you that money because we want to play the game. What's standing in the way of that at the moment is an understanding of what Areal is, how it's going to play and how it's systems interact with one another.

We don't know what you're making, and as a result people are hesitant to part with their money. To combat this I would recommend getting as honest and upfront about your design, at every opportunity that you can. If you don't, you're looking at a very long and unrewarding twenty three and a half days that ends with that cash counter resetting to zero.

Most open world games have vehicles as means of transport. The world does not need to be extremely vast to accomplish that. We'll have more story and game-play details tomorrow. There is no way that we can list every single game-play mechanic on our Kickstarter -- no one does that, and it would go over the character cap for the page :).

@West Games: Ok cool so you have green zones of some degree of habitability and are going to ignore the hydrocarbon breakdown of fuel. That's alright, as long as you declare it straight up. So a further question would then be, if you need an efficient means of transport, you're going to have some significantly vast spaces to make that transport relevant. How open world are we talking here?

    11. Avalanche on June 29, 2014

Thanks again for the reply. I'll stop doing that to save time.

Do you know if (s)he works for GSC? Where does it clearly state that "they officially represent GSC on certain matters"? I didn't see that. And which matters?

    12. Sebastien Lezin on June 29, 2014

I appreciate the regular updates, but I will only bring back my pledge to the original $60 when I see some sort of gameplay footage. I personally don't need an explanation on your budget, although people have legitimate concerns about that as well.
I really hope you can deliver the footage before the Kickstarter is over. I am ready to forget the very shady start of this campaign and fully support you once you do that :)

    13. West Games Creator on June 29, 2014

The facebook page states that it represents the interests and intellectual property of GSC Game World. I do not know the administrator's name, but he or she clearly states that they officially represent GSC on certain matters. https://www.facebook.com/officialstalker

    14. Avalanche on June 29, 2014

      Thank for the reply.

Yes, I've read that post. But who is running the page?

      Ragulin sent it directly, okay.

    15. West Games Creator on June 29, 2014

Tanks are strictly in the green zone, which is the zone wherein technology still works. Vehicles are an efficient means of transport. Fuel exists, because if we make everything exactly like things are in real life, then the game wouldn't be as fun.

That post from GSC doesn't tell me anything about your game or why you're including tanks. I've yet to post anything disparaging toward West Games, so their concerns don't apply to me, either.

Would be kind enough to comment on my question directly?

    17. West Games Creator on June 29, 2014

This is a pinned post from said facebook page, "As the Official page for GSC Game World, we represent the interests and intellectual property of GSC Game World. Since GSC Game World is not currently producing any games, we have generously and tirelessly supported and promoted all those Games that former GSC Employees have been involved with in the past, currently and in the future. This includes Metro 2033, Survarium, Cradle, Nuclear Union ( no longer in production ) and now Areal. This is nothing new. We also have promoted the Modding Community with major titles such as Misery, The Seed, Lost Alpha and other works. Our position is that all in the Stalker Community benefit from such a diverse and unique variety of Games. The only thing we are not tolerant about is one part of the Stalker Community disparaging another. Thanks for your understanding and support. "

A fan who nicknames himself Ragulin sent us the art :)

    18. Avalanche on June 29, 2014

(I respectfully ask no-one else answer my first question, as I am specifically trying to find things out from West Games)

I've asked a couple of times before, but your link is a facebook page. Who is running this page and why are their views important?

Who did the fan art? Do you have a website or was it posted somewhere or...?

This is better than before, but we're still largely in the dark as to what your game's focus and features which you've mentioned is focused on a post apocalyptic struggle for survival after society falls apart.

With that in mind how do vehicles play a role in the game? Where do tanks fit into that range of vehicles? Will the player pilot or be at the mercy of these vehicles? How do the vehicles fit within the larger narrative in the game, namely how are they being maintained in a condition where they can function, and where is the fuel to power them being supplied? One of the first things that's going to happen in a society crash is the breakdown of modern amenities like gas stations, and also gas, which breaks down over a period of half a year or less. Functioning tanks, being the gas guzzling, high maintenance primadonna's that they are, seem to go against the underlying societal breakdown theme of the game that you are touting.

Unless of course there's some aspect to the game's theme that we don't yet know, in which case, please, inform us as to how they fit. We are all dying to know.
