I'm funded! Wow! I made the video above to set a STRETCH GOAL! If I can raise $1,600 by April 26 there are two things I want to do to make this project EVEN BETTER! I'll record three interviews with an expert in the field of happiness, the field of green design, and the field of health and put those interviews online in audio files for all backers of this project to enjoy!
...and I'll add ten additional pages of my photography to my book. More photography will make this a better book, and really help get my message of "Going Greener" out there! I hope you can find a level of support to help me reach my new goal and get some fantastic rewards for yourself - or just share this project and help me spread the word! Thanks!
Hooray! I wrote a book! It's EcoHappy: Three Steps Toward an Earth-Friendly Life, illustrated with my own fine art photography, and it celebrates GOING GREENER! Help me get my book published and out in the world!
Headlines are troubling. The Earth is out of balance. What do we do? Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Capture every scrap of paper to put in that blue bin. And when that small scrap of paper hits the others in the pile, you have to wonder: am I really making a difference?
I’m going to argue that you are making a difference. If there are three rules for living an eco-friendly life, an “Eco-Happy” life, they are :
- Keep Learning, and
- Embrace Change, and the happiness it can bring.
Everyone can go greener! I want my book to share that hopeful message!
When I was younger, I was very environmentally aware. My mother had to come into my into my room one night when I was in grade school - because I was crying about the whales! I embraced environmentalism when I was studying architecture at college, and carried around a metal fork, knife and spoon in my purse so I would not have to throw away plastic!
Then, as I got older, I found the world had caught up with going greener, becoming more aware, and I hadn't. I was the one who needed to catch up! I wanted to change, but I was just plain overwhelmed, (and guilty!)
So, on Earth Day 2013 I founded the website and blog www.EcoHappyStyle.com , celebrating Fabulous Green Design and Smart Earth Friendly Living. In writing and covering those subjects, I hoped I could start to make my life greener as well, one step at a time!
My book EcoHappy: Three Steps Toward An Earth-Friendly Life came out of exploring what it means to be "EcoHappy" - letting go of being overwhelmed, and finding things that are great for you and good for the environment. It's a short, thoughtful text, paired with my own fine art photography. I like to think of it as a book you'd be proud to place on your coffee table, for others to grab and leaf through!
I've teamed with award-winning graphic designer Christianne Smith, founder of designsmith studio in Saratoga Springs, New York to help me format, edit and publish this softcover book. (Professional formatting is very important because of the large amount of photography in the book! I'm SO excited to work on the final page layouts!)
..with my background as a jewelry designer and photographer I have fabulous rewards for you when you support me, my book, and my green message! They include:
Reward: A Digital Downloadable Paper of Ten Easy Green Tips, and Three 5 inch x 7 inch downloadable Loretta Fontaine Photography Images at 300dpi, ready for you to print, or use in a creative personal project. (In my video you'll see one of the three digital files printed and framed behind me!)
Reward: Loretta Fontaine Jewelry Reversible Sterling Silver Lucy Earrings With Stuyvesant Fern. These earrings are handcrafted in my studio and feature my own miniature original photography and freshwater pearls. Reversible, you can thread the ear wire off the earring, turn it around, and wear the pair two ways! A photograph of a fern on one side, and textured sterling silver that I designed from an abstracted William Morris Wallpaper on the other side! (I'm wearing these earrings in my video!)
REWARD: Giclee Prints on Hahnemuhle Archival Fine Art Bamboo paper. I'm so THRILLED to find a greener alternative to the silver gelatin print! These fine art prints are made for me in Mark Bolle's Creative Photo & Graphic studio in Saratoga Springs, New York. I am producing in limited editions my "Tulip Tree Leaf Unfolding" in your choice of black and white or color. The quality of these fine photography prints is truly amazing!
...and for those who want to really get behind this project and support my message of "going greener," I have three very special BACKER PACKAGES. You'll get larger 17" x 22" fine art giclee prints, or a personal photo shoot, or a green consultation, or have me give a green presentation to your school or organization! ...and get a HUGE, GIGANTIC, HUMUNGOUS "EcoHappy" hug and a written "THANK YOU" published in the book!
I've truly been overwhelmed with the support my friends, family and community have shown me as I've worked on this book. Thank you, everyone!
...and lastly, a big thank you to KICKSTARTER, the cool employees and the creative community I met when I traveled to Greenpoint, Brooklyn to launch this project from the newly renovated KICKSTARTER Headquarters! The building (a former pencil factory!) was full of amazing green design features, and the energy of the people working inside was amazing!
Risks and challenges
The book EcoHappy: Three Steps Towards An Earth-Friendly Life has already been written and the photographs compiled. This Kickstarter project is to get the book to print! Formatting a book and choosing the proper printer can take time. I'm teaming with the talented Christianne Smith of designsmith studio in Saratoga Springs to help me with all of this. It is possible that the process will take longer than we expect.
Many of the rewards are already finished - I've had the blank notecards printed, and finished the ten pairs of "Lucy Earrings with Stuyvesant Fern" in my studio. I've teamed with Mark Bolles of Saratoga Springs and we're already proofed and printed the first fine art giclee prints in both black and white and color of "Tulip Tree Leaf Unfolding." Mark has my files and can produce the beautiful giclee prints on demand as we need them.
As the Kickstarter progresses, I'll be sharing the progress (and any hiccups!) on my blog EcoHappyStyle.com!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
