I want to start a school where adults and children can take classes taught by professional artists, musicians, and innovators.

THE STORY

L'Ecole Des Beaux Arts (LDBA) was started because even with a degree in fine art, I had difficulty in finding the instruction, information and tools I needed to continue to grow and become a better artist. I noticed that the same was true for my friends and neighbors, most of whom are also artists, innovators, and creatives. As I started a dialogue with them, the need became clear: we needed a kind of two-fold community institution. Yes, we needed place where we could obtain artist supplies and tools, but we needed it to include an open studios educational element - a space that would provide classes taught by local, community experts for adults and children alike. The response was overwhelming. People came out of the woodwork wanting not just to share their expertise, but wanting to continue their own educations by enrolling themselves and their children as well.

THE PROJECT

I have put together an initial list of teachers and the classes they will teach at LDBA. My goal is to start the first round using kickstarter.  Classes will be held in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and will begin as early as January 2013, to  continue through the spring. Course work, class size and content are decided based on the needs and desires of the teacher and community. Teachers are chosen for their expertise and refined aesthetic; materials are chosen for their high quality, function and durability. The money from kickstarter will pay the teachers and buy the supplies, as well as help pay for the space. This project will fund the first round of classes at LDBA.

With your contribution, you will help start a school.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The risks and challenges that I am facing on this project are luckily very few. I have the space, teachers and supplies lined up; all I need is the funding. I can see teacher's schedules being an issue; unforeseen challenges arising with student scheduling, but I am confident that I can figure out schedules that work for everyone. Obviously there may be delays in production; however, I have included plenty of of time for production of items that may be delayed. I feel that with constant communication between myself and the artists, teachers, and students, I can work out any challenges that arrise.

It requires skill in metalworking, woodworking, design, patience, attention, and general levelheadedness. You have to take your time if you want to do things right, otherwise your experience will be sub-optimal. Christopher Harth, a Minnesota native and a jack- of-all-trades makes knives that are stunningly beautiful and extremely well made. The Mushroom knife has a curved blade to slice through stems, a horsehair brush to clean spores and soil, a wooden handle, and a leather adjustable wrist strap. Christopher custom makes the knives to order, all he needs is a tracing of your hand and a little more information. We will send you a packet to fill out and send back for your custom knife. When the knife is made, you will be invited to a class where you and 4 other lucky participants will learn how to forage and identify edible mushrooms in the area, and properly cut and prepare those mushrooms for an unforgettable culinary experience. Chris teaches the class and will be available at the end for any questions you may have. Class time: 90 minutes. (The knife alone is available for purchase on www.ldbabrooklyn.com)
