About this project
You know all of those food scraps that are leftover while preparing food ingredients in the process of cooking? BIOVESSEL is a solution to all of this food waste that you’ve created and would normally throw into the garbage bin. Now all you need to do is place your raw food waste into a different disposal place.
BIOVESSEL is an indoor ecosystem that is inspired by nature and designed to deal with your waste, it brings nature into your urban home and redefines your waste by turning it into nutrients that feeds new life!
BIOVESSEL has been created to change how food waste in urban kitchens and homes is dealt with, making composting easy and achievable in every household.
Mother nature has its own way of dealing with organic waste. In the natural environment, soil, earthworms, water, and light work together to decompose organic matter gradually over time.
The earthworms are a vital part of this ecosystem as they consume and break down organic matter into smaller pieces and are also responsible for mixing soil layers, allowing the nutrients to be dispersed through the soil and becoming available to bacteria and fungi, which aid to accelerate decomposition.
BIOVESSEL brings this natural ecosystem into your home and redefines your food waste as it becomes nutrients that continues to nourish new life.
The form of BIOVESSEL has not been deliberately designed for aesthetic appeal, neither is it another machine created to deal with the waste that humans have created, instead, we let nature decide.
BIOVESSEL has been created from the data collected and compiled from 20+ months of biological research, experiments, and observation on the process of food waste decomposition. The information documented from these observations and experiments were then translated into quantitative data. By putting the data into a specially developed algorithm, BIOVESSEL was born based on parametrics, ergonomics, etc. Being defined and designed by nature, the ecosystem that BioVessel creates is most suitable for its inhabitants and is one that is most effective and most convenient for its users.
The size of the top caps and the exact spots that they are positioned at are decided according to their relative functions. The ventilation holes on the top caps imitate the patterns of sunflower seed spirals, using the golden ratio and air permeability as parameters, we achieve the most optimal state for the internal environment.
The most suitable position and density for the openings on the wood cap is determined by the analysis of aerodynamic parameters.
Data from parameters such as experiments, biological behaviour, and other factors from manufacturing process are integrated to create the form of the vessel. The end result of BIOVESSEL is a form that fits the biological decomposition process and efficiency within the vessel to the largest extent.
A mix of approximately 7 Liters of humus and sawdust soil, containing 500–600g of composting worms is required to activate BIOVESSEL.
THINGS WE'VE EXPERIMENTED WITH
The vicious cycle that is created from the food that we waste each day is astonishing.
We often take food for granted and never think twice about our consumption behaviors, but in fact, food loss and waste take up a substantial part of resources, including water, land, energy, labour and capital and needlessly produce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global warming and climate change.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), approximately 1.3 billion tonnes is lost or wasted every year. All this food waste contributes to the largest volume of material in U.S. landfills, taking at least 3–6 months to degrade.

We are a biolab and design studio startup from Taiwan that brings together biologists, botanists, landscape designers and architects dedicated to biological research, conservation and innovation.
Through biology observation and experiment, we apply biological technologies in designing bionic products and developing eco-integrated system solutions. Last but not least, we seek to work with scientists looking for applications of their research and technologies.
Risks and challenges
At BIONICRAFT, we believe that nature, science and design can be combined to change the vicious food waste cycle.
