Hi there! My name is Matt Searles and I'm a pastor from Oxford, England. Thanks for checking out this fundraising campaign for my new album 'Tumbling Sky'. I'm really passionate about the vision behind this album - and I'd love for you to partner with me to help make it a reality!
I've lined up a wonderful team of musicians to record in Feb 2016, all who can be confirmed if we meet our funding goal.
Mixing and mastering have not been planned or booked yet, but we aim to do this Spring/Summer 2016 ready for a summer release of the album.
The songs are all written. About half have new tunes, but half will use old folk tunes that I have found - as I have been searching for melodies that convey some of the sadness and heartache present in some of these psalms. Some of the songs will be more upbeat and full of confidence, though not triumphalistic. Currently (though this may change) the list of psalms that will appear on the album is: 3, 13, 23, 30, 44, 57, 62, 63, 88, 138, 143.
We'll work hard at creating a sound that fits these psalms - raw and reflective with very few drums. At every stage our decisions will be governed by the one question: what will most help people engage with God during times of trial?
'Weeping is only for a night' is the one track we have recorded already: you can listen to it here:
The fundraising goal is £8000 which is what we have worked out we need to record this album with the great team laid out above, as well as to mix, master and press the CDs. Obviously if we surpassed this goal we could take a little more time over everything. I'm SO grateful for any contribution you're able to make, in order to make this album a reality!
As well as the songs, I will also write devotions on each of the psalms. These will be short meditations of 600 words or so. My prayer is that the songs and the devotions would not be ends in themselves, but would help people engage with the original psalms, and get past some of the unfamiliarity of language to discover a sweet and precious gift from God to us as we live the life of faith.
A couple of years ago I wrote some similar devotions on Psalms 113-118 in the run up to Easter, which you can find here

I preached on Psalm 30 'Weeping is only for a night' at a conference on disability recently. You can listen to audio, and read a summary here

Risks and challenges
This is a genuine fundraiser - we haven't recorded the album yet, and exactly how and when we do so will depend on how much money is raised. A recording space and musicians are booked for February, and we hope to have the project mixed and finished around Summer 2016, but we can't be 100% sure of this date as yet. We've budgeted carefully to make sure this project is achievable - and will keep in touch if there are any unforeseen delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
