ouch- so sorry to hear this (as i am sure you are to report it)

maybe look at it as an opportunity to think through anything needing it. although, after working on the game for as long as you have been working on it, thinking about it is probably about the same as thinking about all the troubles associated with your newly broken hand ...

maybe just drink your way through it?

Hi Nick. You're right -- it's time for some news, but unfortunately the update is that I've broken my right hand and I'm going to have to delay the game because I can't type (at least, not quickly). Please see the latest update for a more complete account. --Bob

      Hi PrebenR!

You are right. As I can see, you backed 20 USD, there is actually no questionnaire for you. Sorry for the inconvenience.

However, keep the login details, because we will use that site to get the game to you as soon as it becomes available.

Hi all. Yesterday Kickstarter finished their back-end processing and sent me the final list of backers. Within the next few days I will be writing an Update that describes what happens next. In the meantime, I have returned from a week at the annual Game Developers Conference, where I was happy to get an enormous amount of positive feedback about the project.

      More soon...

The last time I played a text adventure was around 1990 (?) - Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy if I remember. This project inspired me to download TADS and play Return to Ditch Day. I recommend it if Thaumistry has wet your appetite - now I am looking forward to the release even more!

@ MichaelB: Yup, I understand there's a converter program for FW3 files now, but I haven't tried it.

@ Connie: Your faith in me is gratifying. Your *daughter's* faith in me is a miracle! :-)

@Fien: I'm looking into options to allow people to contribute via PayPal (which Kickstarter doesn't permit). I'll let everyone know when I've got something in place.

    24. Fien on February 22, 2017

Very happy Thaumistry got funded. :) And more! Maybe pledges via PayPal are an option to get the $4762 needed for the next stretch goal?

Hi Michael S, Michael K, and PrebenR

You are correct that firing up iFrotz will get you the basic functionality of Thaumistry on iOS. We do plan to ship a .t3 file with the game that is compatible with all TADS interpreters, so that people who already have interpreters they have previously configured can play the game in a way that is comfortable for them.

But even so, that solution is not only messy for naïve players (a *lot* of our backers have never played interactive fiction games), but it also does not support the “Play Anywhere” functionality we hope to create.

A simpler way of saying this is that we hope players will be able to download the game onto their phones and launch it with a simple tap (without having to worry about installing interpreters), and that they’ll be able to play across different devices.

In addition, our version of the interpreter would be specifically customized for Thaumistry. Making a generic .t3 file available is of course cheap and requires less effort (and something we plan to do anyway,) but the stretch goals are not for that. They are for porting our custom interpreter to mobile and for designing & developing UI menus, screens, and interfaces appropriate to each platform. Even though Thaumistry is a text-only game, we'd still like to have the same text formatting capabilities on mobile as we do on desktops (something the current iOS and Android interpreters do not support) as well as all the other functionality we've added to the TADS engine.

In short, we hope to deliver the broadest functionality to the widest group of people possible. So we’ll see how far we can get! :-)

Looking very much forward to old interactive fiction magic again!

For z-code games I'm using Text Fiction app on android. It is quite nice to play on a tablet. Although I prefer playing on Linux.

As for TADS there is an app called
      Son of Hunky Punk

That currently has support for :Tads 2.5.14, 3.0.18. So perhaps this can be used?

    41. Che Strauss on February 19, 2017

@Michael Stein: You're right. I hope, we'll get a TADS file anyway. So firing up the TADS interpreter of your choice with it will be all you need. Besides some comfy features there's no additional programming needed, as you mentionend.

    42. Michael Stein
      on February 19, 2017

Sorry if this has already been asked, but I'm wondering why the stretch goals for iOS and Android are so high. Is it really so expensive to port a text only game to mobile platforms? Now people might say it's difficult to play on smartphones, but actually this is what I'm usually doing by using a bluetooth keyboard (and that's supported by the mobile platforms out of the box, so no additional programming should be needed). Wouldn't it be an opportunity to lower these stretch goals to attract more backers during the last hours?

    43. Bob Bates Creator on February 18, 2017

@Giovanni: I appreciate the thought, but there's an easier way for current backers to help us get to the next goal without having to dig deeper in their own pockets - if people spread the word to their friends by posting and tweeting, the numbers are sure to go up.

@Ingo, Tassilo hasn't created any art for the game yet (other than working with Michael on the "cover art" for the campaign), so we won't have any game-specific samples of his work before the campaign closes. You can see some of his other work at

      Hi to all backers !
I was thinking: 900 of us, 3 days for new backers and less than 5000 to the next goal means that it can still be reached if of us just ups its pledge by 5$ (maybe less)...
Why don't we do it ? I'll give it a try... I added 10$ to my pledge, you never know... if only half of us do the same we are there !
I'm curious about what Bob will come up with...

    46. Fien on February 17, 2017

@gilman88: My recommendations for free IF games:
      - Spider and Web by Andrew Plotkin. I absolutely loved this "groundhog day" revisited game. In the end you will get it and you will get it right. Not very hard.
      - Anchorhead by Michael Gentry. Horror. Lots and lots to explore. Good story. Great Lovecraftian atmosphere, easy puzzles.
      - Photopia by Adam Cadre. Short, very impressive and moving. All story, no puzzles.

    47. Bob Bates Creator on February 17, 2017

@jester59388: Maybe if we all ganged up on Steve he would cave in and give us a new game.

@Brian and Gilman88: Definitely agree checking out the IFComp games and Emily Short's work!

@Vesko: Thanks! The poster isn't designed, but I'm pretty sure it will feature another one of Michael Hengst's great photographs, in the style that you see on the main page here, and with more samples at

Have to agree with @Steve Mueller. DRM-free on GOG is the best way to go. I hate Steam and only buy there if there is absolutely NO other choice.
