About this project
Community Radio, “The Theater of the Mind,” is a tradition of self-expression, art and music. Great American musicians, actors, writers, and journalists date their careers back to community radio where they got their first break. Broadcasting is a great American 'Commons' which we can pass on to the next generation. Community Radio helps "take back the media."
When people build real Community Radio, they discover why this is such an important community resource:
It is immediately accessible to everyone - rigestimatedht now - regardless of economic or technical resources. The most inclusive media to date, community programming can be heard for the price of a cheap radio. It is a simple and portable technology.
Radio makes live public discourse possible for better understanding of issues, and for sharing important news and emergency safety information. Community radio acts as a virtual “town-square” for building and protecting democracy, as well as enhancing the 'common good' – those things we value and hold in trust for the next generation.
Community radio is more than on-air broadcasting; it is also a community media center which offers a venue for people to congregate, enjoy cultural gatherings, and collaborate on creative projects.
What are the short-term and long-term goals of Voices of Oklahoma?

Transmitter -- $8,000
Transmitter Coaxial Cable -- $9,000
Antenna -- $15,000
Transmitter Shelter -- $10,000
Tower rental -- $12,000
Studio to Transmitter Link Decoder: -- $3,000
Miscellaneous expenses & labor -- $4000
Total -- $61,000
The KVOY Community Radio project fosters a return to the kind of traditional person-to-person connections that are treasured in the life of our towns, villages and farms. Community radio is fundamentally not another technical venture, but a venture into building humanity. Long-term, we will provide local news, music and cultural events and generate a local understanding of world affairs. Eventually we expect to form a network of Community stations, both Low-Power and Full-power, which share knowledge and resources and engage in a genuine sense of community.
