About a year ago, I had an idea for a campaign, mega-dungeon, and optional rule guide called Liberation of the Demon Slayer. But, I didn't use kickstarter to self-publish it for two reasons. First, I didn't know enough about this crowd-funding phenomenon. Second, I didn't know if I could do it.
Seeing it through to the end and being happy with the results were my goals. Please check out DriveThruRPG, RPGNow (where The Baleful Sorcerer of Tsathag'kha is also available for FREE), or amazon.com to see how Liberation of the Demon Slayer turned out. I've posted a couple LotDS review links below in the FAQ secton.
Now, I'm ready to embark upon module #2. What makes this one special... different than all the other D&Desque modules out there? I'm going to bring a level of weirdness, science-fantasy, gonzo (without getting too silly), and horror/exploitation that you've rarely seen - yes, there will be scantily clad females! Last House on the Left meets Heavy Metal with an unhealthy dose of Lovecraft's Dreamlands!
Rather than another dungeon crawl (but there will still be dungeon areas in which to delve), this is an above-ground wilderness exploration with tons of NPC encounters - various denizens, factions, and shipwrecked islanders either trying to survive or vying for power.
Specifically, adventurers will explore three islands in close proximity that have been visited by a wyrm-riding empire, extra-dimensional invaders, space aliens, Elves, Dwarves, Humans, and more. They'll find black pylons enabling time/space travel, an devil-god worshiping temple of extra-dimensional properties, a shattered dome city, and most importantly, The Thing That Rots From The Sky!
Lots of awesome art, cartography, and original monsters, magic items, and assorted weirdness in 32 (8.5 x 11) pages [32 or more! That's the bare minimum. It might be a half dozen or more pages beyond 32, depends on a lot of factors. But it will definitely be at least 32]. There's one thing I'm excited about including - a random backstory vignette. Just after character creation, the player rolls a die, the GM goes into the brief details about a particular situation from the PC's past, and there's a minute or two of roleplaying. This gives added depth, color, immersion, roleplaying, and backstory to each adventurer!
I would love to make The Islands of Purple-Haunted Putrescence bigger and better! So, I decided to do exactly that! I'll make sure this book comes out to 111 pages and somewhere between 40 and 60 backstory vignettes.
Once this kickstarter is over and done with, feel free to get in touch with me regarding pre-orders.
Risks and challenges
If I'm dead or comatose, this project will likely go uncompleted. However, that's the only non-negotiable obstacle I foresee. I've given myself a bonus month - beyond what I think I'll need - to get everything finished.
