About this project
There are so many sci-fi RPGs in existence! Why shouldn't player characters have somewhere to unwind after a long day-cycle?
Alpha Blue was a Federation space station for the study of sexual addiction and rehabilitation of its clientele. That was back in the good old days when enjoying sex was for deviants. Behavioral psychologists believed that stimulus overload would cure addictive personality disorder. Simply, give those hopeless degenerates what they crave... seven-fold! And pretty soon, their obsession will burn itself out.
It was years before those kinds of theories were debunked and said behavioral psychologists were rounded up with the rest of humanity's failures and blasted into the nearest star.
Now decommissioned, Alpha Blue is something akin to an interstellar whore house or "love boat", drifting from planet to planet, acquiring new talent, clients, and security. It's as big as a city, so there's no shortage of wild escapades, interesting characters, lucrative opportunities, and naked throbbing pleasure. Plus, there will be plenty of scenario seeds fleshed out for planet-side shenanigans.
Aside from my imagination, I'll be relying on classic sci-fi TV and film inspiration to see my through... such as Blake's 7, (vintage) Doctor Who and Star Trek, Star Wars, Ice Pirates, Heavy Metal, Thundarr the Barbarian, Starchaser: the Legend of Orin, Flash Gordon, Blade Runner, Buck Rogers, Battlestar Galactica, Dune, Saturn 3, Woody Allen's Sleeper, and a dozen more.
I think I've undershot the page count of every KS campaign I've ever run (that means I end up over-delivering, bigger books filled with more awesome!). So, I'm not exactly sure about the length of Alpha Blue. I'm shooting for somewhere around 60 pages.
Below is a piece of artwork that will be included in the book (plus many, many more).
Will there be sex? Yes, some sex will be mentioned and described. It's not going to be an all-out DnD porno, but readers should expect a fair amount of futuristic exploitation sleaze and smut. It'll also be lighthearted and silly in places, too. Perfect for RPGs like Crimson Dragon Slayer and OSR / 5e systems that lean more towards science fiction than fantasy.
What else? Oh yeah, customized dice! I've already ordered a ton of chessex dice. 16mm (that's the bigger kind) d6 with the Kort'thalis Publishing dragon's head (or is that a Devil?) in place of the "6", as well as, corresponding sets of the 7 polyhedrons of the same color. There's translucent red, purple, and blue (with white), plus opaque black (with red). The black d6s will allow for opaque black with red numbers (dice set) and opaque red with black numbers (dice set).
If you're getting dice with your backer reward, then you'll get the full 7-dice set plus 6 matching Kort'thalis d6 dice. At $12, I think that's a good deal. You'll be able to lock in your color preference right away via email. First come, first serve.
I've just secured some badass-looking 6" x 5" leather drawstring pouches (burgundy shown and a medium brown) for those who want them. I've seen similar going for $50 or more, but I know a guy who hand-makes these and he's giving me a deal. If you want one, it's $20.
What's pictured below is what you'll be getting and you better believe I'm saving one for myself. No pouch, no problem. You'll get your dice in a zip-lock bag.
I'll post regular bi-weekly updates. If you want to know what I'm up to beyond that, keep tabs on my old school gaming blog:
And Draconic Magazine:
Glynn Seal of MonkeyBlood Design will be handling the layout and cartography.
Before I go, I'm doing something new for the 12" x 12" wood-burned dice trays, a portrait of Cthulhu with a sigil of His awakening. Ia Ia Cthulhu f'htagn!
The video is up! Though it's long and a bit rambley, it should give backers a better idea of the project (some aspects, at least).
Risks and challenges
This is my 4th KS, and Kort'thalis Publishing has put out a number of really cool books over the years.
Unless I die, slip into a coma, or am abducted by aliens, you'll have the PDF and/or book(s) in your hands on or shortly after the projected release date. That's just the way I roll.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
