Together with author and New Jersey native, Nicole Haroutunian, I am starting Halfway There. A free, quarterly event that brings established, emerging, local and visiting writers of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, some of whom are native to New Jersey and Montclair.
Montclair, NJ is a vibrant and progressive community. It's my community. The place where I come with friends and family to shop, to eat, to see art, to hear music. I've been a part of this community for 16 years. As a writer and writing teacher, a lover of words and stories of all kinds, I've always enjoyed being read to. I think it is something very special to hear the work from the writer's own voice.
Here in Montclair there are a few literary events where the public can come and hear authors read their work. These local events are wonderful. However, they generally present established, well-known authors. I believe there is also a need to showcase emerging writers of literary fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. What a joy it is to discover new voices. And how exciting it would be to discover them in New Jersey in Montclair, a nurturing community full of writers, readers, and creative people.
There are not many places in the whole northern New Jersey region that host a regular reading series of this sort and we have already generated support from authors, the local community and the Red Eye Cafe, which has agreed to host the series for the year. We are working on an exciting line-up of authors for our first event on September 14th.
We are asking for $800 to cover the yearly cost of this event. The majority of this money will go to the staff at Red Eye Cafe who are working the event. The remaining funds will be used for marketing and administrative needs such as website design and maintenance and printing costs.
Nicole and I are very excited to plan the Halfway There series and bring these voices to New Jersey and Montclair. We hope you are excited by this idea, too. Any donation helps!
Risks and challenges
The great news is, there aren't many risks involved. We may face some challenges in coordinating schedules, but I am confident that each line-up will come together. Additionally, the weather may present a problem in the winter months in which case we will reschedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
