HORRAY: FULLY FUNDED WITH A WEEK TO GO:

25% funded after day 1.

Fully funded after 20 days.

Now we aim for stretch goal nr 2.

Let's make locally produced food accessible everywhere.

Let´s create open-source, peer to peer tools for local food networks.

Let’s build a local food app!

The Local Food App as a bullet list.

  •  Empowering IRL first hand relations
  • No revenue loss for producers
  • Donation based financial model
  • Open source
  • App is made by and for grassroot movements

This campaing aim to fund further developent of customized, open-source tools for local, small-scale food producers to meet the market on their terms. In short, the project will build a mobile app (Local Food App) where small-scale food producers can reach consumers without intermediaries or loss of revenue. The campaign aims to finance a new and improved version of the app so it will be easier to access local food in fair conditions around the world.

We want to direct our food production to more sustainable methods, beyond environmental degradation, bee extinction, soil erosion, depletion, and dictating intermediaries. We want to strengthen local food networks, increase local resilience, and create direct relationships between producers and consumers.

The demoapp is up an running and can be used right away in Sweden and in english-speaking countries.

Find it at Google Play and App store

In short, the app helps producers with orders and ease handling of their customers and orders.

The ask for the app to do so much more makes us being here att kickstarter.

The app takes zero % cut from the producer, but is based on gift economy model.

The app is based on the API from the website localfoodnodes.org that we have created. Along side the app, we are working on the next and much improved version 2.0 of the site. Go check it out here.

Oh, and see well renowned permaculture farmer Richard Perkins put the project into his words.

If this project speaks to you, we love to see you backing it.

Think global. Eat local.
Think global. Eat local.

At some point we all have to eat, right? The thing is, that the current food system is flawed and floods the pockets of some, leaving nothing for others. Often in ways that are bad for the environment, to say the least.

Reconnecting farmers to end consumers

All of this is about to change. All over the globe people are discovering and exploring ways to reconnect farmers to end consumers. So did we and somehow we did it in a way that really got things going.

We started to build digital tools that aimed to enable real physical meetings between local food producers and end consumer, cutting out the middlemen. At first a decent web site, then an even more decent web site, followed by an almost decent demo-mobile app. And things all of sudden slowly started to snowball.

Making our app work on a global scale

Local food producers started to connect through local drop-off points with end-consumers, using our almost-decent-demo-app. Still, the demands were high for better tailored tools, more features and making it possible for further countries to tap in to the system. That’s why we are here on Kickstarter, to fulfil those needs, and to do it on a global scale.

Why we do it

Even if we are considered a start-up, kind of, our entrance to all this is from a social change and development perspective. We do it because we think it is a human right to have proper food on our tables. Food that is produced in environmentally friendly ways, because we also think that coming generations have that same right too. And we think it needs to be done with no in-between-revenue-cutting-middleman. Just farmer to locals. End of story.

So by unleashing this campaign, we take on the task of building a world wide working mobile application: "Local Food App". An app that sidesteps all middlemen and instead creates first hand relations where they need to be, with the consumer. This to increase our much needed local food independence, and doing it together, everywhere. So hey, let’s do this.

Read more about us, the app, our perks, our economy philosophy and what not below. Many thanks for getting this far and we hope you stay tuned and contribute in whatever way feels right for you.

With love /The Local Food Nodes Team #letsgolocal

Accepting things as they are just isn't us

We had this itch. How could we create a new food system? A system where local food is easily accessed as a natural part of everyday life, distributed directly from the source, in season. A system where first-hand relations between producers and end-consumers flourish, without any third- party middleman dictating financial terms .... or any other terms for that matter.

We wanted to see real people meet up, shake hands, have a laugh and socialise over real food. Food produced in sustainable ways with less or equal outtake than input in relations to its ecosystem context. We wanted to change everything we are used to when it comes to food and grocery shopping. We did not want this “planet-destroying-greed-empowered-life-on-earth-jeopardizing-big-scale-good-for-nothing-food” any longer.

So, we just got going. Based on huge amounts of input and knowledge from local producers and ordinary people - people like you and us - we created the prototype for a digitally supported solution to make this happen. And it is happening, step by step.

As you read this, innumerable people, both producers and consumers all over Sweden are reaching out to one another through local drop-of points. Buying local food straight from one another, becoming friends and sidestepping the traditional food chains. Just doing what all of a sudden feels so normal to them. All empowered by the tool we have used massive amounts of hours creating.

No crowd, No nothing

We are of course not alone in this. Without the crowd there is nothing. We brought what we could to the table and so can you. Whether you would like to support the cause financially within this campaign, a campaign to take our demo app from patched up prototype to smashing full-scale globally ready app, or if you are a code genius that want to contribute with some beautiful code to the project through our GitHub. Or create a local food node in your community, and be a real local difference maker.

We are all local heroes - LET ́S GO LOCAL

Together we can co-create the future of food, and no matter in what ways we take part, we are all local food heroes that maybe, just maybe, someday will be sung about in some remote future, as Mother Earth takes a sigh of relief from the pressure mankind has created so far, as we just might have been a part of turning things right again.

Background

We realized the need of a simplifying mobil app, that was also easy to use, as a part of the digital solution we were setting up. Without any prior experience we patched up our first ever app, and oh my did we all of a sudden see the user numbers increase much faster. But we also got input about features much needed, both from producers and consumers. Voices from other countries were heard, wanting the app to be customised for usage abroad too. Needs we just weren´t able to satisfy. But again... thats why we are here at kickstarter.

Demo version - Consumers only

The demo app is a simple version for costumers only; Find nodes. Filter on pick-up dates. See what’s available. Order. That kind of basic stuff, all framed with our novice shooting- from-the-hip UX design.

Our mobile app.
Our mobile app.

Full scale version - Your local pocket food market / Complete producer sales admin tool

The features from the demo app will remain in some ways. But the upcoming version will be internationalised so that it can be used anywhere. A jaw-dropping brand new UX design will be implemented. Notification features and ability to follow producers, filtering and customising the set up? Hell yes, that too.

Hey, you can actually keep your favourite farmers in your pocket and be notified when to order, and when to pick up. How neat is that?

As a producer you will easily create new products, administer dates for delivery and get notified when bookings are made, and by whom. The nifty sales and organising tool for your business. And hey, its free!

Oh, and another thing...We plan for translation tools so the app quickly can be translated into any language, by anyone.

Who is this for?

You eat? Then it's for you.

You produce food and want to sell locally and build first hand relations straight with your local costumers, without any revenue loss? It's for you too.

You think a local food node is needed in your local community, and you want to be the one setting it up? Then it’s for you too.

Engaging experience building the app.

To build the new smashing app we will engage experienced app developer, either as in house competence within LFN, or as a collaboration with an existing app developer team.

Self sufficiency, individually or locally, is a great thing and can be fun. But it can also be a future necessity. Well, we are already kind of self sufficient, globally, within the planet, for now, but it doesn't work out all that perfectly now does it? We are pushing her, the planet, a bit harder than we ought to and the consequences might start to close in on us all, soon.

We have reached a point where there is a state of global consensus that many things are broken and need to be fixed in new ways. Food is that one thing that we more or less have to begin with. Without the ability to feed the population, well, I guess you get where we are going with this?

So, we and many other people are therefore working on how we can secure the food supply for the future. Food that is produced in ways not over exploring the planet, that is healthy and is accessible for everyday people, and is distributed in ways not stuck in the same broken system we are used to.

Fresh, in season

There is a huge movement trying to explore better ways of securing the future food supply chains, going local and cutting out all middlemen. Maybe not just for fun, even though it is fun doing it, but because it could become a bloody must.

The most fun part though, is that it’s happening and that it seems to work, and that there are open source blueprint models ready to copy and get going anywhere. Yup, that’s us, Local Food Nodes.

By supporting the development of Local Food Nodes now, while we are doing things that seem to work for real, you and your local community have the possibility to sidestep everything you've learned when it comes to grocery shopping, and create tailored solutions for your local community, without any middlemen. And yes, that means us too, because we are just bridging you guys, making it easier for you to build relations over your local food, first hand.

Creating valuable moments.
Creating valuable moments.

We aim to simplify building real life relations, and we far from believe that tech is the solution to everything, especially not to social relations, but it can be a helping hand in some matters, and our demo-app seems to bee prove this.

You know, at some point we've all got to eat, and then your best asset might be knowing how to grow your own food. If not, knowing some kick ass farmers, first hand, could be the second best option. And yes, there could be a kick ass mobile app for that. The Local Food App.

Gift based, transparent, and all surplus donated.
Gift based, transparent, and all surplus donated.

No private profits, full transparency

We believe that the credibility and sustainability of our existing economic system is unfair and outdated and that it is time to find new economic paths.

Local Food Nodes therefore has a fully transparent economy where all transactions are available for everyone to take part of, but also a model where all possible surplus after wages and operating costs will be reinvested in projects that promote local food.

This means that no surplus will hit the pockets of any private interests or enrich any owners or shareholders, because there are none.

This also means that if surplus is generated all supporting members can take part in deciding how the surplus should be used, what projects to support and so on.

With this we hope to show by example and set a new standard for how start-ups can achieve success with completely new economic thinking.

Because we believe that money can make more use if it is distributed in completely new ways, not enriching just a few, but the whole cause, and we are prepared to be a frontrunner for a new economic business mind-set.

LFN Team: Alexander Frödeberg - David Ajnered - Albin Ponnert
LFN Team: Alexander Frödeberg - David Ajnered - Albin Ponnert

Albin Ponnert: Founder - Project manager.

Albin is the initiator of Local Food Nodes and has been carrying the idea of creating solutions to empower autonomous food markets driven by local people for many years, before finally getting his thoughts into actions.

He has a background in film making and always been drawn to creating grassroots and citizen participation projects.

Albin spends his time being a dad, a hobby-farmer and developing Local Food Nodes, in that order. He´s convinced we need a change in our economic views and is therefore trying to showcase alternatives within the field of local food, because that is what everything boils down to in the end. Because no food, no nothing.

David Ajnered: Co-Founder - Lead developer - Backend.

David is a key factor to the very existence of Local Food Nodes. Prior to Alexander, David the lone developer of all code within LFN. He strongly believes in a change of mindset in how to prioritise our time and space, consumption and eating. David cut down his hours as a full time employed backend developer to part time, just to find time to make a new digitally supported food system come true.

Alexander Frödeberg: Frontend developer.

Alexander went from helping out occasionally with some front-end implementation, to quitting his day job and becoming a full team member. Alex is combining working in his own small business with LFN frontend coding. And man was he needed!?

The tech is just a little part of it all

Besides us creating the tech, there are so many more people making this happen in so many different ways. From our perspective Local Food Nodes is something we create together and the outcome is owned by no one really. We feel a need for this to happen, so we engage at whatever level suits us individually. Local Food Nodes is a solution that is open for contribution. And one funny thing is, most of us have never met.

Meet a few of the LFN contributors:

Anna Sundberg, Sweden. Goat farmer and board member of the organisation "Small Scale Farmers in Sweden". She has been part of the project before the first string of code was even written. Anna is a priceless asset and deeply engaged in local food matters. Based in the Stockholm area, and she is a huge contributor to the phenomena of local food nodes now growing in the capital of Sweden.

Veronica Bick, Sweden. Is a small scale veggie farmer and a straw house builder. She was responsible for setting up one of the first nodes in Sweden, "Orust Mat". Veronica gives seminars about their local food node on demand, and has been extremely helpful with producer-perspective feedback throughout the developing from day one.

Isabelle Axelsson, Sweden. Young, smart and extremely driven. She made contact to meet up and hear about the project already three years ago. Since then she has set up two nodes in Sweden and is mentoring both producers and consumers when needed. She has a long wish list of developing needs to be implemented.

Rick Albers is a farmer in the U.S. that has being following the project closely for some years from his side of the Atlantic, with the ambition to set up nodes in the Twin Cities area when the platform is mature enough.

Danne Palm, Sweden, a bass player and selfsuffficency nerd. He is the founder of the local food node "REKO-ring Bergum-Gunnilse", one of the first nodes to use the demo-app.

"One step ahead" Jennie Johansson, Sweden. Besides running a node in Gävle, she is also exploring possibilities in creating co-organized "the last mile" local food distribution solutions from node to home.

Oki Yobu, Japan, is an orange farmer since generations back, and about to create a node in Tokyo, Japan.

Tom DeCoste is a farmer from Maine U.S, working on introducing local food nodes as a part of his local community.

Reminder: Everyone, including the tech-team, is so far doing all contribution efforts in their own time and pro-bono.

We believe in the importance of re-creating and co-creating the food system. In order to do that, we need to mobilise to make it happen. We bring what we can to the table with the purpose of creating an open source decentralising mobile app for local food.

So, please feel free to share this information and invite everyone you think share the enthusiasm for a healthier food system!

Mobilising can really make a difference.

The Local Food Nodes around the world challenge

Start a node, join a node or create a producer account and make a short video greeting telling the world you just went local.

Local food is about to happen on a global scale, and together we can inspire others to go local.

Make your local food nodes video greeting from your part of the world, to the rest off the world (try and make it less than 30 seconds).

Things to keep in mind when creating your video greeting (yes, a mobile camera will do fine)

  • Use your country´s native tongue
  • Your name
  • Your position (node admin, consumer, producer)
  • Your city/village and country
  • Your node name (if you have one)
  • When the node was started/is about to start
  • Why you started a node/got engaged in local food nodes
  • End your video greeting with ”letsgolocal”

Send your native tongue video greeting to info@localfoodnodes.org with subject line containing "COUNTRY, LOCATION, NODE NAME" (e.g USA, Minneapolis, Node Name) and we will share it on the campaign FB - group and our Instagram.

Risks and challenges

The Local Food Nodes project is built pro-bono by this small team, based on the idea of making a much needed change to the food system. We are still just a pro-bono team and struggle with finding time to meet all the asked for technical development needs. This crowdfunding-campaign is a part of solving the "shortage of man hour" issue, and we hope it can speed things up.

Still we are reaching out for more people to engage in the development in the same ways that we are.
Until then, we are as many as we are, and can only do as much. But be patient, we are and has been for some years now, going from a pre-study, to prototyp to first version and demo-app to now this.
Our future food supply deserves to be solved, and we are up for the task.
