Building Something Beautiful: Kirtan Soul Revival's First Album
We want more love, connection, joy and healing in the world. This is our inspiration and intention in offering our music. Join us in creating our first full record and make this vision a reality!
Kirtan Soul Revival is so excited to announce that we are recording our first full-length album and we are asking you to collaborate with us by investing in our vision. Our goal is to reach as many people as possible with our unique offering of soulful, spirit-filled, funky, love-infused music. The kind of music we play, based on kirtan (a form of participatory sacred music from India) is the practice of chanting mantras - powerful energy-based sounds that help facilitate a deeper spiritual connection within ourselves, to others, and to the world around us. We incorporate English language original music, spirituals and music from around the globe to create a dynamic sound that merges funk, rock, rhythm and blues, world grooves and chants, all infused with lush three-part harmonies.
"Kirtan Soul Revival is a fresh and uplifting voice in the world of kirtan music. Vibrant, soul-stirring singing with stellar harmonies and groovin' guitar -- KSR will make your heart smile." - Sean Johnson, kirtan artist
We have led kirtans in and around New York City (including Integral Yoga Institute and Jivamukti Yoga), toured throughout New England (including stops at Kripalu), and have played festivals such as BhaktiFest, VerMantra, and Berwick Yoga Festival in Nova Scotia. Wherever we go, we are overwhelmed by the incredible response to our music. People are longing for this kind of spirit-filled music in their lives. We have received feedback that our music is “deeply transformational.” Other participants have shared: “It brought me to tears.” “I felt so blessed and guided by your music.” “Thank you for the blessing coming so genuinely from your hearts.”
In this last year we have had the opportunity to record with inspiring kirtan wallahs such as Krishna Das, The Hanumen, and Prema Hara. All of these experiences have prepared us for the practicalities of making a record. The money you pledge will help pay for:
Recording (engineer, studio time and musicians)
Mixing (engineer mixes each song so that all the various instruments and vocals sound good together)
Mastering (engineer makes the CD sound good as a whole, so it jumps out of your speakers)
Design and Layout (graphic artist makes the CD beautiful)
Manufacturing (production and packaging of the physical CDs)
Our new CD will be recorded in a live setting to capture the energy of the in-person experience of our kirtans. It will include new and improved versions of previously released songs such as Ganesha Sharanam and Om Guru/Sea of Love; we will record favorites like I Release and I Let Go; and add some brand new chants as well. We are blessed to have some amazing guest musicians lending their talents to this project.
Crowdfunding gives you an opportunity to invest in projects that are meaningful to you. By lending your energy (through your financial support) towards the creation of this album, you are helping to bring more healing, joy and connection into the world. Or, think about it this way - you buying the album in advance, helps us make it!
In exchange for your donations, we have some beautiful offerings for you: signed copies of the new CD; a song written just for you; a private guitar, ukulele or yoga lesson; or even a private KSR house concert. As a supporter, you’ll get the inside scoop on what the recording process looks and sounds like, as we post updates, photos, videos, music, etc. along the way.
This project will only be funded if we meet our goal. If you believe that this music has a healing, uplifting and transformative power that the world needs, then please donate generously. You can also help by sharing this link with your network of friends and family (through e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) We are deeply grateful for all of your love and support, and we’re really looking forward to sharing this experience with you!
Thank you so much for being a catalyst for joy and love in the world.
Love and Gratitude,
KSR (Calia Marshall, Helen Styring Tocci & Todd Keller)
Kirtan Soul Revival (KSR) is New York City’s funkiest devotional mantra music experience. They use traditional Sanskrit mantras, original music, spirituals and music from around the world to create a unique, dynamic sound that merges funk, rock, rhythm and blues, world grooves, and chants. Lush three-part harmonies add fullness and depth to their sound. Kirtan is a celebration of spirit through the chanting of sacred names. KSR invites their audiences to participate fully through call-and-response chanting. Through KSR’s simple presentation, even non-singers can easily experience the joy of being surrounded by harmony in a space that encourages improvisation and exploration. The Kirtan Soul Revival experience invites participants to open their hearts to Spirit and to life!
KSR has led kirtans in and around New York City (including Integral Yoga Institute and Jivamukti Yoga). With 3 successful New England tours, including stops at Kripalu, they have played festivals such as BhaktiFest, VerMantra, and Berwick Yoga Festival in Nova Scotia. Their chant workshop, titled 'Divine Harmony,' has been offered to groups as large as 80 people. They also teach heart-centered yoga classes infusing flowing vinyasa and breath-centered movement with live music, chanting, and story-telling.
“What great energy and fresh melodies, I just love these three! They have great voices and lots of bhakti to share.” -Wah!, kirtan artist
"Kirtan Soul Revival is a fresh and exuberant addition to the world of Kirtan. This NYC based trio mixes heart drenched melodies, lush harmonies and infectious grooves, serving up a sultry and dreamy passion that works it's way into every corner of your heart. In person or on CD, their original chants will get your hands clapping and feet stomping. This group is not to be missed!" -Mike Cohen, kirtan artist
"KSR has a unique sound - beautiful vocals and harmonies, earthy arrangements, and juicy electric guitar. They're sweet, funky and fun. As young Mantra Musicians, they bring a special energy to their chanting and a great blend of traditional and modern sounds. They are undoubtedly part of the Mantra Revolution and share my passion of bringing kirtan and sacred music to the masses." -Gaura Vani, kirtan artist
"Where many bands, of any genre, may have one outstanding vocalist who carries the weight of the singing, KSR has three. And they don’t hold back. In between solos showcasing their individual vocal prowess, they were belting out three-part harmonies like the best a capella barber shop trio. You couldn’t help but sit up and take notice." -The Bhakti Beat
Risks and challenges
We are working in a new studio setting for this album, where as our last 2 EPs (3-song albums) were recorded in Todd's home studio. It's a new process for us, but we've already begun recording and so far it's been incredible! We're confident that we'll be pleased with our work with our amazing engineer, kirtan wallah Devadas, who has recorded many other kirtan albums (all of which sound great). As a backer, you are our partner. If there are any issues along the way, we will be sure to keep you updated. We're excited to share this project with you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
