It all started back in late 2010 when I was in desperate need of some local bouldering. I was living in Ithaca, NY at the time and the closest bouldering area was a tie between the southern Adirondacks or the Gunks. Either way travel was just over 3hrs one way. The long 6hr round trip drives every weekend (often multiple trips) were wearing on me, my syke and my wallet.
I began becoming curious with the environs of Northern PA that year's winter. I would find myself hiking around the forests for fun. I would admire the endless mountains, wildlife, solitude and unique geology of the area.
As fate would have it one cold winter day while hiking, I came upon some sandstone roofs that at first pass seemed climbable. The solid white sandstone features excited me. The holds were solid, the texture was exquisite and at that moment the fire was lit. While just over an hour drive north back home I was surrounded by friable, unclimbable shale. From this small discovery, I had no clue what would follow.
Fast forward through winter to that following April. I made it a point to return to those PA roofs with a good climbing friend. Since then, the bouldering near that small town of Leroy, PA has boomed and subsequently transformed my life with local rock climbing.
The following years I began a development rampage. Over 19 unique areas have been discovered and developed including many single boulders littering the forest floors.
Easily over 600 problems established and more still to be found and climbed. The quality of quantity of the bouldering on this plateau has been fully realized.
Some of the bouldering here can be said to be close parity with that of which is coveted in the Southeastern US.
If you live in Elmira, Ithaca, Binghamton, Williamsport or anywhere else in between... this is your local bouldering destination! It can be said, even if you live 2-3 hours away, you can still find it well worth the travel to experience these amazing sandstone boulders, better winter weather and less insect nuisance in the summer.
The 4th year anniversary of day 1 discovery is fast approaching and a currently a good portion of the climbing has reached full maturity. Most all major lines have been established, repeated and enjoyed. With the influx of regional climbing interest it only seems natural to publish a document which others can easily follow.
I am currently the gatekeeper of much of the information of the who, what, where and when of all the climbing and that is unfair to you. I have online resources that I have spent much of my time creating the past years. Individuals have been desiring something that can be tossed in their pack and used while out at the boulderfields.
My goals for the guidebook include:
- Low barrier to entry, low to zero cost guidebook
- Completion guidebook for fall 2015 usage
- Comprehensive. Easy to follow and highly visual. Estimated 150+ pages
- Hopes for 2015 development to be included prior to release
- Continual PDF updates until ability for second edition
- Beautiful and information rich full-color content pages
- Post Kickstarter distribution through Amazon and Barnes & Nobles
