Hi!

We're Nevada and Nick, the founders of Okewa – a rainwear brand based in Wellington, New Zealand. For the past three years we've been perfecting the art of making the world's best waterproof rainwear with an aesthetic more at home in the city.

We're excited to introduce you to our new capsule collection made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. Alarmed by the statistic that by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in the sea (by weight), we set out to reuse some of this plastic and give it a second life.

So please join us! Jump on board the campaign to pre-order yourself a coat from our new Recycled Line at special Kickstarter pricing. Thank you for helping us along on this journey, and we hope you love the styles as much as we've enjoyed crafting them.

Recycled Line

Meet our new Recycled Line. Luxurious waterproof rainwear made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. Since launching our brand a few years ago we've developed our speciality in completely waterproof raincoats and our newest line is no different. All of the coats are waterproof rated to 10,000mm, breathable to 10,000g/m2/24hr and seam-sealed. As always, they're all horizontal-rain tested right here in Wellington!

Rewards

Take your pick of our six styles below! We're thrilled to be able to offer these rewards duty free into USA, New Zealand and Australia. Please note duty and taxes into other countries are the responsibility of the backer to pay, and we suggest you investigate what additional charges might be payable at your end. Of course, do let us know at any time if you have any questions (enquiries@okewarainwear.com).

The Fabric

The process from discarded bottles to luxurious rainwear is quite a long one! We're using a two-layer cloth with a technical membrane backing and a face fabric of 100% recycled plastic bottles. We've developed the fabric with a Taiwanese partner of ours (jump ahead to our 'Partners' section below for a photo from our recent visit to their facility).

Our fabric is prepared in a Bluesign®-approved mill. Bluesign® is a Switzerland-based environmental accreditation programme that works to maintain high environmental performance standards across textile supply chains.

Happy Customers

We've worked really hard to delight our customers since our launch a few years ago and are proud of our products' great track record. We strive to make coats that exceed your expectations, are more useful in your wardrobe than you ever expected and make rainy days that little bit more delightful.

Size Chart

Please check the chart below for your size, and standby for our survey on your size selection at the end of the campaign. Do feel free to get in touch by email if you have any queries on sizing. You can catch us at enquiries@okewarainwear.com

Mens sizes noted below are regular jacket sizes (the NZ / AUS / UK / USA column is your chest measurement in inches).

Partners

We're immensely proud of the partners we've assembled to deliver our Recycled Line project. Our fabric supplier is a partner we have worked with for several years. On the garment making side, we are proud to be working with a new partner in Thailand who is one of the world's leading manufacturers and is at the forefront of ethical and sustainable practices.

Our Global Plastic Problem

Environmental challenges within our fashion industry are vast, being the second most polluting industry in the world (after oil) and we at Okewa continue to look for ways to tread more lightly on the planet.

Alarmingly, the Ellen McArthur Foundation has found that by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in the sea (by weight) on our current trajectory. As part of Okewa's response to this issue we feel wherever we have an opportunity to reuse material already in circulation, instead of extracting new raw material, we should absolutely do this. Reusing plastic waste has become one of those opportunities for us.

Another significant contributor to plastics in the sea is the issue of microfibres shedding off synthetic clothing. Most microfibre shedding occurs during the washing process, so we therefore recommend washing your coat as minimally as possible, and just spot-washing where this will suffice. [NB: Interestingly, Patagonia commissioned research that found front loader washing machines can prevent up to 5x the amount of microfibres being shed as top loaders.]

Also driving our overall sustainability strategy is simply to continue making high quality long lasting garments that stand the test of time. Together with our manufacturer's corporate sustainability team, we are continuing to develop our strategy around the global plastic problem and other environmental issues.

Behind the scenes

We hope you enjoyed our stop-motion video! It was a lot of fun to make. We're very grateful to our Wellington-based team of photographer / videographer Richard Ban, animator and paper-cutting wizard Ahmad Habash and musician Barnaby Weir (of Fly My Pretties) on the voiceover. Our lookbook photography is by Adam Bryce.

We're so grateful for your support of our project to get our Recycled Line off the ground. With your help we're looking forward to giving problematic plastic bottles a luxurious second life as we all strive to take steps in the right direction on this mammoth issue of plastic waste.

Here's to the new rainwear!

Risks and challenges

Timing is always a critical factor to consider in managing a fashion apparel supply chain and we have now had several years experience with this which minimises risks to you, our backers. We are confident we can meet the timeline noted above on the fabric side due to our ongoing relationship with our fabric supplier we have worked with for several years now, and on the manufacturing side due to the very high calibre of partner we are working with.

We have also successfully dispatched two Kickstarter campaigns previous to this one on time (with very happy backers!) so any risks are minimal. Unforeseen delays in either manufacturing or shipping are always a possibility, and in their event we would keep you completely informed at each step.
