We want rainwear to be irresistible.
Okewa grew out of a personal frustration of not being able to find a decent raincoat suited for an urban lifestyle. The outdoors adventure market seems to be well-supported by highly functional rainwear but many of the options just don't fit in the city.
Okewa has developed The First Five - a premium range of men's and women's coats that are fully lined, completely waterproof (every seam is seam-sealed), hooded and cut from hi-tech two-layer waterproof fabrics woven in the best fabric mills of Japan and Korea. These coats will keep you dry in style.
We’re a husband and wife team from Fashion and Architecture backgrounds. Being based in the very walkable and climatically wild city of Wellington NZ, we know a thing or two about windy wet weather and its implications for your wardrobe. We love our car-less life strolling from home to work to weekend markets to cafes and we've learned this lifestyle certainly does demand the perfect raincoat. No one likes being caught off guard in the rain and we've known there must be better solutions possible to help you to express your usual stylish self through anything the next southerly throws at you.
We take our name from the Maori word 'Okewa' meaning large grey rain cloud or large grey stone. We seek beauty in the grey - the 'off days'.
We've made sure we've covered the technical details of The First Five over the past year of development time. All of The First Five are cut from hi-tech two-layer fabrics in the following two colour choices:
- Ink Navy: 100% Nylon face fabric (top later), Microporous Polyurethane Coating (bottom layer); Water resistance performance 10,000mm; Breathable to 8,000g/m2/24hrs.
- Charcoal: 80% Nylon 20% PE face fabric (top later), Microporous Polyurethane Coating (bottom layer); Water resistance performance 10,000mm; Breathable to 8,000g/m2/24hrs.
These water resistance ratings have been keeping us dry in Wellington Waterfront Torrentials, so rest assured they're up to the task. In addition to the waterproof bottom later, both face fabrics are dipped in a Durable Water Repellant (DWR) solution which beads the rain off the fabric.
The First Five
We're starting strong bringing a limited run of our Premium line to Kickstarter. All are cut from beautiful, hi-tech waterproof fabrics. These five Okewa raincoats are all to be Made In New Zealand by our family-run manufacturers. These guys are extremely well-practised in producing garments to the exacting standards of heavy duty NZ safety wear. Coupled with our strong design sensibility, we reckon we've got all the boxes ticked.
All of The First Five are available in Ink Navy and Charcoal colourways.
The Womans Collection
At our stretch goal of $40,000 the Women's Fold Coat is added.
The Mens Collection
At our stretch goal of $40,000 the Men's Trench Coat is added.
Sizing and Chart
We won't need to confirm your size until the Kickstarter campaign has concluded (we'll be in touch with you), but see each style's size chart below to check you're within the ballpark. Measurements provided are those of the coats themselves (not a body underneath them!) so be sure to allow for that. We suggest adding 3-4cm onto a measurement taken over normal clothes being worn under the coat, and finding the best match to that number of the charts below. Please be in touch with any queries you may have on sizing - we'll happily guide you through it!
Added 21 Aug - ALL MEASUREMENTS NOTED IN CMS

We will be in touch to take your coat style and size selections at the end of the campaign. We'll also take down your colour preference. We note this will be a preference only - whilst we will do our very best to fulfill your preference, we can not guarantee all first choices will be available to all backers, as we only have set lengths of the two coloured fabrics. We thought it was more important to deliver the coats to you quickly rather than holding the fabric weaving process back until we had taken your orders. We trust you'll understand this reality of Kick Starting!
We're keen to work closely with you as we confirm sizings following the end of the campaign to ensure what we make for you will fit you perfectly, so please feel free to contact us at any time with any queries on sizing. Any returns will be a bit tricky for us to process, as we've only been able to bring in enough fabric from our mills for the number of orders we are taking (given we're still in Kick Start phase, after all!). That said, we have allowed some small contingencies, so if there is a major issue with a the size you receive we will do our best to put it right wherever we can.
Thank you - from the Okewa crew.

- Richard Ban - www.richardban.com - for running a night shoot under the [fake] rain with beautiful results.

Risks and challenges
Timeline - As our makers in Auckland have worked through the sampling of each design, we've got a fairly good idea of how long manufacturing processes will take so we're fairly sure we'll be able to deliver your raincoats out to you by the end of October. It's possible that unforeseen delays may happen and we'll work through these hastily and keep you informed at every step!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
