+ + + INSERT COIN ! + + +
Welcome to our Kickstarter to fund the production of Player One: An Illustrated History of Game Controllers Vol.1, the first in a three-part series of books detailing the history of joysticks and game controllers.
Player One: An Illustrated History of Game Controllers Vol.1 begins our journey way back in 1972 starting with the Magnavox Odyssey controller that is oft heralded as the grandfather of modern game controllers, through the joystick boom of the early '80s, to the emergence of game pads as the dominant force by the late '80s.
The book will feature photographs, detailed descriptions, reviews and technical information on over 120 different joysticks and game controllers released between 1972 and 1989.
+ + + KICKSTARTER REWARDS + + +
The book is offered in regular hardcover and softcover as well as a Kickstarter-exclusive limited signed and numbered hardcover and softcover edition.
We have unlocked some great stretch goal rewards!
+ + + LIMITED KICKSTARTER EDITIONS + + +
The limited edition softcovers and hardcovers feature a unique cover not available outside Kickstarter.
We will only ever produce up to 50 copies of the signed and numbered softcover edition, and up to 10 copies of the signed and numbered hardcover edition.
The limited editions will only be available through this and future Player 1 Books Kickstarters.
If you backed our previous Kickstarter, and back at the same level in this Kickstarter, you will be allocated the same book number. Otherwise numbers will be issued in pledge order.
We will work to ensure that you receive the same number and format if you decide to back volumes two and three.
+ + + BOOK CONTENTS + + +
Our book will feature over 120 game controllers including joysticks, light guns, paddles, game pads, and more. It will include copies of retro game controller adverts, technical reviews of key controller types, and over 40 pages of text articles on the history of game controllers.

+ + + PLAYER ONE UP ! + + +
Player One: An Illustrated History of Game Controllers Vol.1 will be 208 pages in length and printed in a 6 x 9 (inch) hardcover and softcover formats.
We are planning to release two more volumes over the next 18 months to complete the series which together will cover over 360 different game controllers from the very beginning of gaming right through to the present day.
By releasing the volumes this way we are able to get the books in your hands quicker than if we combine them into a single volume. This will also allow those who are interested in particular eras to just back those books.
Volume one will be released in June 2016.
Volumes two and three will seek funding via separate Kickstarter campaigns.

Risks and challenges
ACCESS TO GAME CONTROLLERS: Although we have an extensive collection of over two hundred and forty game controllers, we will be relying on third parties to assist in providing some imagery. We are working with several gamers to ensure that we can capture all necessary imagery, although it is remotely possible that some controllers may have to be dropped if images cannot be obtained.
PREVIOUS KICKSTARTER: We are currently wrapping up work on our previous book project, "The ELITE Archives: A 30 Year History of ELITE" which details the rich and varied history of the computer game ELITE.
DELAYS AND DELIVERY TIMEFRAMES: Our previous Kickstarter resulted in an extra 80 pages added to the book, plus we have included additional pages beyond that. This increase in the book length has added several months to the delivery schedule meaning that we missed our original date. This project to produce "Player One: An Illustrated History of Game Controllers Vol.1" has been defined for volume one to be set at 208 pages in length.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
