UP THE RIVER is a narrative feature film about Rebecca, a young woman who finds herself in flux. Freshly out of grad school and searching for a job, she leaves the city for a quick getaway with her fiancé, Thomas, his best friend, Willy, and Willy’s girlfriend, Laura. As the weekend unfolds, Rebecca struggles through emotional uncertainty; doubtful of her relationship with Thomas and intrigued by Willy's advances.
The film stars Lindsay Burdge (A TEACHER, FIRST WINTER), Will Brill (NOT FADE AWAY), Adam David Thompson (A WALK AMONG TOMBSTONES, MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, +1), and Nathalie Love (SOMEWHERE, PALO ALTO, PROMISES WRITTEN IN WATER). It also features acclaimed writer Luc Sante (YOU ARE NOT I, BLUE IN THE FACE).
UP THE RIVER was written and directed by Ben Greenblatt, and produced by Nick Shore and Brendan McHugh.
Jean-Raphael Ambron worked on the film as executive producer, and provided the production support of Act Zero Films (BLUEBIRD, BLUMENTHAL).
The film was shot by cinematographer Jake Magee, who shot NAZ + MAALIK, a Kickstarter project that was successfully funded late last year.
We will be working with acclaimed sound designer Nathan Ruyle (THE RAMBLER, THIS IS MARTIN BONNER, IT FELT LIKE LOVE).
We wrapped production in August and have been editing since. We have finished a cut of the film and are now in the last stages of post-production. We still need to finalize our sound mix, color grading, titles, music composition and music licensing, and ultimately, create a DCP & Blu-Ray so we can show the film to the world.
HOW YOUR SUPPORT HELPS
Your donations will go towards helping us complete post-production. $30,000 is the minimum to cover all of the needs mentioned above. These are all specialized services, and to do them correctly is not cheap. Any remaining funds will go towards festival submission fees, publicity, accounting and legal fees. We’ve been able to cover the costs of production and the initial editing stages but now we need your help to finish. Your support means the world to us!
Kickstarter is an ALL-OR-NOTHING fundraising platform. If we do not meet our “goal” amount, our project receives ZERO of the funds. Your credit cards will not be charged UNLESS we meet the target goal.
If you cannot donate, you can still support us by sharing our project with friends, family, co-workers, acquaintances, and so on. Please spread the word!
Supporting this film is supporting independent filmmaking. And if that isn’t reason enough, we think we have some great rewards!
Among these rewards are limited edition prints of two set photographs taken during filming in Upstate New York. We’re very excited to be able to offer them to you, both as original photographs and also as representations of this film.
The first photo, by Stephen Shore, is being offered for donations of $1500. The second is by Louis Heilbronn, for donations of $500.

Risks and challenges
Thankfully production went smoothly and our film is near completion. The next steps after the film is complete are to submit to film festivals and seek distribution. Distribution and the festival circuit are challenging hills to climb, but if we can reach our goal it will make the process easier. We have put the past year of our lives into this for no financial gain and have bet everything on it. We believe in the life of this movie and think we have made something special. We can’t wait to share it with you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
