Wow, thank you! The Second Skins are successfully funded! But because you're just as insatiable as I am...

And in addition to all these wonders, a bizarre opportunity rears its head...

Do you want to race Monsterkarts?

And now, back to your regularly scheduled Kickstarter campaign...

“Monsterhearts lets you and your friends create stories about sexy monsters, teenage angst, personal horror, and secret love triangles. When you play, you explore the terror and confusion that comes both with growing up and feeling like a monster.” - Joe Mcdaldno, creator of Monsterhearts.

I've been designing Skins for it since Monsterhearts was in playtesting; Joe asked to offer my first Skin - The Selkie - as part of the release campaign. I gladly agreed! For this Second Skins campaign, I've updated The Selkie (changing some vital wording and better explaining the core relationship) and am making it available to all! Please, enjoy The Selkie with my thanks for coming to view this campaign!

The Selkie (PDF)

After The Selkie, I just couldn't stop. I've designed six additional Skins, iterating them and tweaking them and shifting their directions, and then playtested them tirelessly with my local game design crew, with meetup folks and convention friends, watching them in both long form and short form games. Versions have flown by. After close to 300 hours of work, we have six extremely solid Skins which push Monsterhearts in bizarre and fruitful new directions.

The Sasquatch is a quiet, awkward person who just wants to disappear. They have moves which allow them to do just that, and which force other PCs to act first.

Example Move: Disappear

When you run away, on a 10 up you may instead choose this result:

  • you slip from view and remain there, invisible.

On a 7-9, add this option to the list:

  • you disappear on the spot, causing wild confusion, and the witness who cares the most about you gets a String on you.

The Wyrm is a cold social manipulator who keeps an eye on who's in with who. They have moves to aid in the acquisition of Strings, and to help other people feel special; always with an ulterior motive.

Example Move: Bargaining Ceremony

Drinking tea, sharing a cigarette, playing chess, or sitting back to back are all ceremonies.

When negotiating a bargain during a ceremony, both of you can offer Strings as part of that bargain. This can include Strings you have on others, or new Strings that you generate on yourselves. When you're both satisfied, the exchange occurs.

The Cuckoo is a flashy opportunist who's always looking to put themselves in interesting positions. They have moves which let them pass as other people - and get away with it.

Example Move: Feathers

When you dress in someone else's clothes in an attempt to pass as them, roll with hot. On a 10 up, you're passing as them - face and body.  You'd fool their mother and their favorite hookup. • On a 7-9, same as above, but choose one:

  • someone suspects,
  • the clothes are noticed missing,
  • you receive some unwanted attention.

While you're passing as someone, give social Conditions you receive to them instead. This won't let you avoid physical Conditions, though.

The Unicorn is a stoic, kind person who tries to be a benevolent force in the world, but doesn't believe in themselves. They have moves which seek to help other people, and which populate the world with strange creatures.

Example Move: Wishes

When other people tell you their wish and erase a String on you, tell them what you think of their wish. If you believe in it, they carry 1 forward to realizing it. If you don't believe, they take that String on you back.

The Firstborn is scared of the wide world, and is perhaps desperate enough to sacrifice what is precious to gain security - and power. Their moves deal with their relationships to their siblings, and then their Tinder expands their effectiveness.

Example Moves: Old Family Friend

When you take your fourth harm, fall down dying. You can't avoid death, but you can transfer it to one of your remaining siblings. Death, be it as a robed figure or as a shadow in the door, comes for them instead of you. When you wake into life again, you're fully healed.

And: A Brighter Fire

When someone with one of your Tinder dies, whether by your hand or not, fill in that Tinder's circle. Their fuel is added to you, and you've unlocked that move.

The Neighbor is a bit of a hot mess who propels themselves into interesting situations that aren't necessarily to their - or anyone's - benefit. Their moves have to do with making choices, social drama, and being a normal person.

Example Move: Mixed Messages

When you're alone with someone, decide if you're attracted to them or not. If you are, tell them why you can't be together and roll to shut them down, adding 1 to the roll.

If you're not, tell them all the things they've got going for them (to let them down easy) and roll to turn them on, adding 1 to the roll.

With all of this hard work my brain starts wiggling into little funny corners and then deposits weird gems that I have to cough out, sort of like a steam release valve. Thus were born the Joke Skins, a collection of ridiculous jokes which are occasionally on-the-nose, sometimes too clever for their own good, and won't stop elbowing Monsterhearts in the mechanics, repeating "Heh heh, get it?" They made me laugh so much that I shared them with Joe, and then HE laughed so much that I asked him to fancy them up and now they're a thing.

I'm making four inter-related products, with an eye to turn a profit and thus continue pouring hours upon hours into my game design work.

  • A PDF of additional Skins for Monsterhearts: 6 Second Skins, and 9 Joke Skins. (Layout has been done, final wording tweaks ongoing, art still to be done.)
  • A PDF of insights, variations and MC advice for Monsterhearts, called What Big Teeth You Have. (Some initial drafts, room to grow throughout this funding campaign, much more content to write, layout has not begun.)
  • A beautiful paper folder letterpressed with the Monsterhearts logo, containing prints of the additional Skins as above. (Letterpress studio has been selected, digital printer has been selected, materials have been sourced. Materials yet to be acquired and printing yet to be done.)
  • A paper book version of the insights, variations and MC advice collection What Big Teeth You Have, as above. (Printer has not been selected.)

Here are the wonderful manifestations of the Second Skins project! The rewards stack as the tiers progress; PDFs give way to print & then there's additional fun stuff beyond!

The Second Skins PDF will include printable Skin sheets for The Sasquatch, The Wyrm, The Cuckoo, The Unicorn, and other two as-yet-unrevealed Second Skins. They are laid out by Joe Mcdaldno, and are illustrated by him from photographs that I took. They are visually compatible with the original Skins.

The Under The Second Skins PDF contains MC tips for creating exciting fiction with the Second Skins, both with tips so obvious you might've overlooked them and ideas hard-won through multi-session playtesting.

The Joke Skins are 9 silly jokes that look like Monsterhearts Skins but for the small banner proclaiming them to be jokes. Viewed collectively, they are funny on a simplistic pun-level, they make reference to a few beloved things, and their mechanics gleefully elbow Monsterhearts in the ribs. They're quite handsomely laid out by Joe Mcdaldno, and poorly illustrated by Jackson Tegu, using modified pictures of his friends. And they've got microfictions in the space where regular Skins have play advice, written by Joe Mcdaldno, Robert Bruce, and Brendan Adkins!

What Big Teeth You Have is a collection of insights, variations, and MC advice for Monsterhearts, and is available in both PDF and paper. WBTYH will continue to swell as this funding campaign grows (fingers crossed!) as that there's a lot of Monsterhearts thought and experience in my community that we'd like to share. Currently, What Big Teeth You Have will include:

  • Under The Second Skins (as above).
  • What an MC should consider when deciding which Skins to field.
  • Three ideas for making Monsterhearts more attractive for people new to gaming.
  • How to run an awesome Monsterhearts game in one sitting of 4 hours.
  • Joe Mcdaldno's Safe Hearts: Boundaries and Vulnerability in Monsterhearts.
  • Jackson Tegu's How to write a good Skin for Monsterhearts.
  • Morgan Stinson's How to win at Monsterhearts.
  • Insightful annotations for the included articles by Morgan Stinson, Ross Cowman, Renee Knipe, Robert Bruce, Hanna Schiendelman, Orion Canning, Carl Rigney, Kira Scott, Fred Kraii, and Joe Mcdaldno.
  • Four new pieces of art by Joe Mcdaldno.
  • A get-wound-up-and-go scenario (aka Skeleton) by Jackson Tegu called Great Lakes of Iowa.
  • A Closetful of Skeletons: a selection of additional get-wound-up-and-go scenarios by Jackson Tegu.

"All Unlocked Extras" currently includes Ross Cowman's re-written version of the shut someone down basic move (laid out into a nice player reference sheet with the other basic moves), two songs inspired by Monsterhearts by Jackson Tegu, and two new Skins: The Firestarter by Orion Canning, and The Giant by Ross Cowman! For the rest of the unlocked extras, scroll down into The Abyss!

Folder Full Of Second Skins
The Wine-colored Folder exists in the realm of paper, not the digital realm. The folder is made from a thick, 100 lb. cardstock wrought of 30% post-consumer recycled fiber, with a luxurious linen feel. Into this the iconic Monsterhearts logo will be deeply letterpressed, three inches tall, in black; which is a shade that is known to hungrily accept all colors of light, sparing none. The folder will be 8.75 inches tall x 5.75 inches wide when closed, making it the ideal size to hold folded Skins for Monsterhearts, ready to play. Not co-incidentally, the folder contains a folded copy of each of the Second Skins, The Selkie, and each of the Joke Skins, all on beautiful 60 lb unglossed paper.

The seasoned observer may note that these folders describe the same dimensions as the folders that Joe Mcdaldno made for the Monsterhearts pre-release campaign. His were of black cardstock, and hand-stenciled with a silver logo. This wine-colored one would look very handsome sitting next to that other.

The paper version of What Big Teeth You Have will be saddle-stitched with metal staples and wear a color cover over a black & white interior. At current it includes the following, hopefully to be added to as our campaign continues:

  • Under The Second Skins (as above).
  • What an MC should consider when deciding which Skins to field.
  • Three ideas for making Monsterhearts more attractive for people new to gaming.
  • How to run an awesome Monsterhearts game in one sitting of 4 hours.

A combination: one of the personifications of the Second Skins (which is to say, a model for the artwork of one of the Second Skins) will not only read aloud, to themselves or whoever else is present, a section of a physical copy of the Skin they're depicted on, but also sign that same copy with some moniker I direct them to scribble onto it, and then I will ship that to you. Some preference as to which Second Skin reads and signs your copy will be available, according to who is not their Darkest Self during our production window.

Additionally, one Cartesianally hand-dyed string, not less than 7 inches in length, both ends knotted, cotton or similar, spendable on yours truly in all the usual ways that one may spend Strings on PCs. I shall be without Conditions at the time of your receipt of it, though I've taken the move "Wishes," from The Unicorn, as shown above. Strings available in your choice of Terra Cotta, Pesto, Denim, or Butterscotch.

These folded-letterpaper-sized zines will be highly visual in nature, each having an aesthetic that comes from our unique interaction, but will include some of the following: sketch and hand-drawing, painting, layered paper, photocopy-generation art, misuse of technologies (general), original photography, recontextualization of extant pieces (use with permission of artist), computer manipulation, artificial damage techniques, garbage, stationary supplies, old clipart, minimalist poetry, mixed media, prose.

We'll have this interaction: you start dreaming. You decide which, among the Second Skins, that you'd like for me to base a zine on for you. You fill out a copy of that Skin's sheet, investing it with character, and mail it to me - not one you've played, someone new. I select materials and an evening in which I'm available into the wee hours. Then I become them, and make an 8 page zine for you, with imagery and words from that character's imagination, showing their passions or insecurities or whatever bubbles up. Finishing touches are put to it, and I make a digital documentation, and two color copies - one for you, and one for me. You also get some manner of documentation of the process the piece took me through, including original pieces of the artwork making up the zine. My anticipation is that final layering will be done digitally, though most of the process will be in the physical realm.

There is no restriction on how many individuals may choose a given Skin. I may collect these into a book at some point, if so, expect credit therein as inspiration to that particular piece, and a PDF copy in your inbox with a thank-you attached should that day come.

I'm secretive, and I save almost every scrap. I don't design in public, often months or even years go by before I even breathe the name of a project that I'm working on. Throughout that time, and after the project opens up into public awareness and general permutating (after it has found its near-final form, but there are still several dozen variables to painstakingly research and test) these little details pile up, often being leafed back through, retracing my progress along and searching for missed opportunities or where a later problem might have an earlier solution. Here, you see what no one else has seen - the trajectory of the Second Skins project.

Though Joe Mcdaldno and those in the Olympia game-design community have certainly seen slices of this, you'll be the first to leaf through the handwritten pages, the minutely or drastically updated versions, and the tentative steps down untaken paths. There are some gems in here, certainly, but more it's a documentation of a perfectionist's approach to game design. Expect 50 or so pages, that half-filled composition notebook w/ someone else's rap songs at the front of it and numerous Monsterhearts notes from me sprinkled throughout the rest, and a hand-written letter expressing my thanks.

I dearly love Big Bad Con. Though it's far from home, it feels like one. With this tier selected, I'll be covered halfway to Big Bad Con this year - and will have an excuse to whip up a bloody little Skeleton (a get-wound-up-and-go type of scenario) that I've been daydreaming about, called Grandma's House.

Grandma's House is a two-page jumping-off-point for a bloodbath: It's the holidays, and the quiet retirement home is bustling with visitors. Snow whispers against the windows. A log on the fire. If only everything weren't about to go horribly wrong...

This game will get your blood pumping out all over the place. I'll run this at Big Bad, and you'll have a chair with your name on it. If that's not in your stars, I'll send you a four page recap of the incredible mess and the Skeleton itself for you to peruse.

Grandma wants you to come to Big Bad Con. Once you arrive, she'll pay for your entrance fee and outfit you in a nice bloodstain-free t-shirt. She's reserved the Hilton Presidential Suite for us to play in, and will even provide pizza to accompany the game. You kids like pizza, don't you?

October 4-6 2013 / Oakland, California, USA.

Completing my journey to Big Bad Con, that pearl of the bay, and giving me cause to bring something quiet and pretty into this world, a tentative, earnest Skeleton (a get-wound-up-and-go type of scenario) called Little Reds. A love story? But why... why do I feel like this?

Little Reds is a two-page bounding board into an endless summer of looking up to meet their eyes and having them blush and turn away. It's about finding strength in each other, maybe - or maybe learning how to regret.

This one will tug on the heartstrings. I'll run this at Big Bad too, and you'll have a chair with your name on it. If that's not your cup of tea, I'll send you a four page recap of the held hands and the hands that went unheld, and the Skeleton itself for you to peruse.

That girl in the red hoodie wants you to come to Big Bad Con. When you arrive, she'll cover your entrance fee and give you a hip Big Bad t-shirt. She pulled some strings and got us the Hilton Presidential Suite to play in, and has scored us some pizza to eat while we play. Do you think… she like, likes you or something?

Here are the successes and new horizons before us, the improvements and additions to the Second Skins project.

I slimmed down the original text of the goals that we've met, because I exceeded the 35,000 character count for the page. Now it's practically a directory! Heee! The original text, full of flowery language, is available here: http://www.photographsoflightning.com/2013/06/what-we-have-already-gained/

Below, the descriptions will be followed with (its subtopic) under the $15 - Skins and All Tier above on this page. …In case you were keeping track what it adds to.

Everything below is available at $15 and above.

Jackson Tegu writes up A Closetful of Skeletons - alternate settings that take Monsterhearts out of the classroom. A summer camp, the social circle surrounding a 24 hour coffee shop, a Wednesday night youth group, a school camping trip, the funeral of someone from the characters' school. (What Big Teeth You Have)

Let us gaze into the abyss now, you and I. What shall we see there, I wonder?

Jason Morningstar and Autumn Winters have collaborated on a stand-alone game for when you are ready to take a light-hearted break from all the emo drama of Monsterhearts. A family of monsters has moved to a human town, each member trying to fit in, trying to help one another live a normal life despite being monsters. Psst! It's also about the process of assimilation among immigrants! It's fast to learn and easy to play. Introducing... The Monsters!

World of Dungeons expansion from John Harper, detailing the Second Skins both as foes and as playable characters in the celebrated microscopic-word-count-footprint of World of Dungeons. Includes the complete World of Dungeons!

Johnstone Metzger barfs out Space Wurm vs. Moonicorn, an adventure scenario to accompany Adventures on Dungeon Planet and Dungeon World! Space Wurm vs. Moonicorn will include AT LEAST two new space fantasy themed Dungeon World playbooks based on the Second Skins!

A Live Action Role-Playing game being constructed, based solidly on Monsterhearts but taking the mechanics away from the table. Terry Romero, John Stavropoulos and Kira Scott combine their creative energies with Nordic Larp techniques to bring us this newest wonder.

Ah, some things for Monsterhearts itself, too!

Renee Knipe and Bret Gillan are working together to bring us The Reanimator, that super smart kid who sits by himself, not really knowing how to make friends. Well - he knows one way.

Ben Wray is carefully tweaking a mini-supplement called The Last that can patch onto any Monsterhearts Skin - that is, whichever is the last of their kind.

Amy Fox, editor of the original Queer Content section in Monsterhearts, preparing A Spectrum of Shadows - a short supplement on filling out the range of gender and sexuality; for MC's and players, for Monsterhearts and beyond.

Kira Scott and John Stavropoulos are building a Monsterhearts one-shot/convention toolkit. Chock full of devious and excellent advice for making your one-shot as sexy, weird, and intimate as you can in four short hours; the mechanics will sing and dance and PCs will have romantic triangles everywhere. Players will get a delicious taste and beg for more!

What could a Monsterhearts scenario or setting look like?

A wizarding school, leaning heavily on Hogwarts and the historic Scholomance, penned by Jonathan Walton. Oh little teenagers, your lives are about to change forever with your admittance to the School of the Arts!

Spring break can be a time for love and for heartbreak, and terrible sunburns when coupled with a vacation to the Bahamas. Renee Knipe is only too pleased to weave together her daydreams in Bahamian Rhapsody!

The open road stretches before you, further than you ever thought you'd go. Behind you, too, back to that insular little town. You and your friends are sure glad you didn't bring any of that pettiness with you - and this hitchhiker seems so sweet. Ben Wray gives us some excellent Car Troubles!

It's unfortunate that this Kickstarter won't reach $11, 715. If we had reached that amount, we would have been graced with a new Skin by Monsterhearts creator Joe Mcdaldno - one which he idly toyed with ideas for while walking from Monstercon with me, just over a year ago. It's a shame we'll never see The Godot.

You've got friends you've never met. Everyone does. You're in constant contact but you've never seen their face. You're just presuming that their pics tell the real story, that they're teen, that they're human. I mean, why wouldn't they be?‬

‪The Godot is a Skin about texting, social media, excuses, foreboding absence, and the occasional big reveal.‬

And it's a real pity we'll never see Morgan Stinson's new lenses to look at Monsterhearts through - three ways to reframe and focus the core game, to unify expectations at the table. These Flesh Contracts won't ever see the light of day.

What would they have been about? One about hilarious awkwardness maybe, one about raw humanity versus savagery, one about being adults, one about a world where monsters aren't even a minority. Probably something like those.

Oh, and Jonathan Walton would've made a 2-page outline for playing homeless monster teens who've holed up in that abandoned school on the outskirts of town. What would they've done when those normal, Adventurous kids came in exploring, with their bats and knives and beautiful eyes and skin that smells like dreams? Guess we'll never get to play Dungeonhearts.

Such a pity, really.

Ben Lehman is making a pair of excellent monster racing supplements, one for XXXXtreme STREET Luge, and the other for Monsterhearts. If you're interested in embracing gravity in the EXTREME downhill lifestyle of street luge but are more interested in SCARINESS than TOUGHLINESS, and/or you wonder what breaking into the boarded-up go-kart track at Crossroads Mall with all of its mysterious sounds and getting behind the wheel of those terrifying things with 50ccs and distended human faces is like, you'll want to get your hands on Monsterkarts.

It's easy. Back both the Monsterhearts Second Skins and the XXXXtreme STREET Luge 5th Anniversary GenCon Edition Kickstarters, each at $5 or more, and we'll send you a PDF before the end of July.

Here's the XXXXtreme STREET Luge Kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/922235145/xxxxtreme-street-luge-5th-anniversary-gencon-editi

I'm quite the lucky devil. Joe Mcdaldno has provided thoughtful feedback all along the way, created a crisp layout, and will be transforming my photographs into the images for the Second Skins. My wonderful Olympia designers have attended me:

  • Morgan Stinson (Accomplished min/maxer and editorial eye)
  • Orion Canning (Fearless run-anything-twice facilitator and all around dreamer)
  • Robert Bruce (Balancer, voice of reason & voice of chaos)
  • Julia Gentlestrength (Magical being and optimal misunderstander)
  • Em Stinson (Riff-offer and grounding rod)
  • Ross Cowman (Direct conduit to the vitality of the fiction)

Each of them made suggestions that penetrated right through to the core of at least one Second Skin, be they as front-end character inspiration or full fledged moves. When I lagged, one of them was always there to give me a stern look or a kind hug, depending on what the moment demanded.

Many other MCs and designers have graced me with their thoughts, Carl Rigney was an early collaborator for The Wyrm; Sev, Ben Wray, Adam Koebel, and Hilary McNaughton helped me move through some sticky word choices.

Jami Heinricher has been running a letterpress and design business since 2003, which she stepped into after a 14 year apprenticeship. As such, she is well beyond qualified to oversee such a small artistic undertaking as the pressing of logos onto paper folders. We've worked together in various arrangements on four previous letterpress projects.

Risks and challenges

Since the writing, testing, and layout are effectively complete, the core of this project has a short trajectory after funding. Joe, the artist, is extremely capable, and Jami, the printer, is accustomed to much higher print runs than I'm projecting that our need will call for. If the folders become immensely popular we'll have no trouble filling that need.

The collection of variations and essays is largely in note form, but the research has been done - these will be short work.

Should the digital printer become troublesome I'll switch to another digital printer, based on community recommendations. I've got my eye on a back-up, though I haven't priced them out.

This is only the second crowd-funding campaign that I've been a part of, and the first was fairly slim. I anticipate that there will be things I haven't anticipated, *wink*, but being surrounded by a community of people who've had successful kickstarters (and a game design community who'll be glad to come and help me stuff envelopes, with the enticement of a pizza party to follow) puts me in good hands in the way of a support network to see this through.

Thank you for taking the time to check out this project!

    THIS IS RIDICULOUS

You will receive a very special copy of a Second Skin, one that was partially read aloud and then signed by the personification of (aka model of art for) that Second Skin. Dizzying picture-within-picture photographic evidence provided. If that were not enough, you'll also receive a single artisanal hand-dyed String, not less than 7 inches in length, and redeemable with yours truly in all the diverse ways described on page 25 of the Monsterhearts book. (You'll also get everything from Real World Skins & Teeth.)

    THE ALBATROSS

Pick one of the Second Skins or Joke Skins, and I'll make you a one-of-a-kind zine while pretending to be that person. It'll be 8 pages long and extremely visual. Comes with additional documentation of its creation. If they are eventually collected and made available at some future date, you will be credited as inspiration. (You'll also get everything from This Is Ridiculous and Real World Skins & Teeth.)

    ALL THE ROUGH NOTES

Jackson Tegu's secretivity is somewhat reknowned. With this perk, you get all the scribbles, partially finished prints, and test versions put into an envelope with a personalized letter (around 50 pages + a half-filled composition notebook). The dirty process, with discarded Moves, discarded Skin ideas, and other weirdness! (This level also includes creation of a zine as per The Albatross, and you'll also get everything from This Is Ridiculous and Real World Skins & Teeth.)

    BIG BAD HEARTS

Blood bath. A custom-made Skeleton (a get-wound-up-and-go scenario) called GRANDMA'S HOUSE will be written, and then MCed by yours truly at the best organized game convention in the world, Big Bad Con (Oakland, CA, USA / 4-6 Oct 2013). If you'll be in attendance at Big Bad, then a seat will be reserved for you at the table - which is in the Hilton Presidential Suite! PLUS your entrance fee to Big Bad Con is covered, you get this year's Big Bad t-shirt, and Big Bad provides pizza for our group! Alternately, I'll write up a four page, scene-by-scene recounting of the tale as it is played and send it to you, along with a copy of the two page Skeleton itself and your Big Bad shirt! (This level also includes creation of a zine as per The Albatross, and you'll also get everything from This Is Ridiculous and Real World Skins & Teeth.)
