Welcome to The Untold #1...
An original horror comics series by Daniel Farrand (Writer and Creator) and Johannes Vick (Artist).
The Untold is a 28 page black and white comic, which will contain splashes of well placed colour throughout. This Kickstarter is for the first installment within the first arc, which will be made up of 6 issues.
Why "The Untold #1" is for you!...
Do you punish yourself repeatedly by watching horror movies, because the fear is intoxicating? This book IS for you!
Are you drawn to books and articles about serial killers and their heinous crimes? because you want to understand how and why? This book IS for you!
When scrolling Facebook and you see a video titled "Real ghost caught on camera", do you have to click it? Despite the fact your palms clam up and your heart races? This book IS for you!
We understand what prevents you from hanging your feet out from under the covers late at night or the reason that you turn the light on in the next room before extinguishing the previous. Even why you snuggle a Basset Hound teddy bear called Brimble each night. (No?... Just me?... Anyone?). Because we do the same. This is what has allowed us to create something both unique and terrifying.
The Untold is a comic created by horror fans for horror fans.

Why I created The Untold...
In recent years I have become increasingly aware, and frustrated, with how many horror projects (both in comics and movies) rely so heavily on excessive gore. Whilst I do feel gore has a place, I feel over use desensitizes the audience and numbs the experience. When you've seen 50 heads cut off or a dozen arms broken with the bone splintering out, the "charm" is rapidly lost!
With "The Untold #1" we have created a warped and twisted world, that will create psychological unease and combined it with well placed striking visual gore to create a truly terrifying experience.
Through a series of dark and twisted visions shown to her by a disfigured demon, Alice must attempt to separate fact from fiction and unravel the truth behind her Grandpa’s decade long stay in the UK's most notorious insane asylum.
The Untold's protagonist is a young girl called Alice. From a young age Alice was emotionally neglected by her parents who, like a lot of adults nowadays, were career driven and money hungry. Whilst her parents intentions were good, Alice was frequently palmed off on her beloved Grandpa, Mr Dyson.
However, Alice didn't mind. Her Grandpa was a war hero, a retired doctor and all round loved member of the community. They did everything together and after the death of his wife, Mr Dyson needed his granddaughter just as much as she needed him.
Unfortunately when Alice was 7 years old, her Grandpa disappeared. The most influential figure in her life, gone with without a trace. Over the next 10 years Alice searched for answers, repeatedly questioning her parents who refused to speak about the matter. This was until her 18th birthday, when Alice's father finally cracked. He revealed that Mr Dyson had been admitted to LongCroft, the UK's most notorious insane asylum.
Upon visiting her Grandpa Alice begins to see apparitions of a young girl, a demon called Daisy. The malevolent spirit drags Alice into a series of dark and twisted visions, each one more grotesque than the last.
Alice quickly realizes "Some things are better left Untold"
Here are the first pages from the book. The first 3 pages are a short "intro". With the story proper beginning on page 4.
We really hope you enjoy our work, hopefully our dedication to creating a quality book shines through.
Although this is just the "Regular" cover, it will be the most widely seen. So for me it had to be of equal beauty with the variant!
The cover was penciled by The Untold's own Johannes Vick. We invited the incredible Peter Palmiotti (Aquaman, X Men and Iron-man) to ink the cover and to give it his personal touch.
John McCrea Variant
The extremely talented John McCrea (Hitman, Judge Dredd and Mythic) kindly agreed to design a cover for The Untold #1 based around "Daisy"
Jyri Straechav variant (print run of 100)
Jryi is a phenomenal dark surrealism artist, who specializes in 3D sculpture. When he agreed to create this amazing cover for The Untold #1 I was so excited, even more so after seeing what he came up with!
"Dark Figure" - Johannes Vick
The amazing piece of The Untold's antagonist "The Dark Figure" has been created by the books artist Johannes Vick. The pin up will be printed on 270mm x 160mm heavy stock card to ensure a great quality reward!
The Dark Figure is introduced within the first 3 pages of The Untold #1, and he starts as he means to go on! The dark, manipulative and twisted character shows us early what he is capable of, and we have only just scratched the surface!
"She's Home" - Riley Schmitz print
Riley is an incredible artist, who I stumbled across through Twitter (@ziddybones, check him out... seriously). He posted his take on Schrodinger's cat, which was beautiful but also thought provoking. From that moment I knew he had to do a piece for The Untold... so here we are...
The pin up will be printed on 270mm x 160mm heavy stock card to ensure a great quality reward!

"Stretch Goal print" by Johannes Vick
Johannes used traditional methods to create this print. He typically specializes in digital art, making this EXTREMELY rare.
The Untold drinking horns
Yes... I know this seems a little random but I want to use my skills to offer a truly special reward for our backers.
Each piece will be handmade by myself, using techniques that I have perfected over years of creating bespoke hand crafted drinking horns.
Using raw cow horn, sourced from Scotland, I will sand and polish the exterior to a smooth shine. The internal will be lined with beeswax to leave a clean and odourless taste.
I will hand carve the exterior with the title of the book, Untold, in the font used for the cover. I will also carve each backers initials into the horn, making it truly unique. The carving will be the same for all but the horn colour and shape will be varied due to horn being a natural product.
Johannes Vick sketch!
If you love the artwork in Untold #1, then this reward really is for you!
Johannes will produce personal a sketch of ANYTHING you desire. (Except pornographic, so keep it clean folks!) It could be you favorite super hero, your favorite comic book character or even a self portrait!!
Where YOUR money goes...
Money doesn't grow on trees (no matter often we bury £20 notes in our back yards!... oh... just me?). I firmly believe in 100% transparency when it comes to backers money, you've worked hard for it and have a right to know that it is being spent wisely!
I have personally funded the artwork for the first 10 pages, as well as various commission pieces to be used as variants and pin ups. (Please don't tell my wife about this bit). Hopefully this will show you how committed myself and Johannes are to this project, and how much we truly believe in it's success.
The money raised from a successful campaign will be used to:-
- Complete the second half of #1.
- Have #1 printed, along with all the awesome rewards.
- Pay postage and shipping fees to fulfil all rewards for our backers.
- Pay KickStarter fees
- A small amount will be set aside for as a contingency.
Any money left over will be used to begin production of #2 and hopefully buy myself a Guinness! (I may allow Johannes out of my basement to see daylight and treat him to a warm meal... maybe...)
Risks and challenges
As we all know if something can go wrong it usually will. It's my job, through prior preparation, to try and ensure nothing can go wrong and if it does it is rectified as soon as possible.
First and foremost, I give my word that every backer will receive the reward that they have been promised, even if I have to fund it out of my own pocket. Kickstarter is built on trust between creator and backer, without that trust we have nothing.
To try and avoid any hiccups, I have "bribed" (with multiple packs of digestive biscuits) my good friend Barry Jones of LoveComicsUk to oversee the packaging and shipment of all rewards. Barry is used to posting multiple comic books daily, so I have zero doubt that the fulfilment is in capable hands.
I am using a UK based printer for The Untold #1, which means should any issues arise they can be sorted as quickly and effectively as possible.
Half of issue #1 is complete and I have 100% faith in Johannes to complete the second half to his incredibly high standard. (Plus, as previously mentioned, he's still locked in my basement! :D)
I have been working on The Untold for two years and have had to navigate numerous artist shaped obstacles to arrive where we are today. Each time I have overcame the problems and learned from them, not only ensuring they will not happen again but also using them to make the project stronger.
