PIXEL HERO PROLOGUE

is an RPG inspired by games of all kinds! We studied design techniques from games like Monkey Island to Metal Gear Solid to Pokemon to Fallout to Dark Souls to DOOM to Castlevania to Surgeon Simulator 2015, and have put together a truly unique experience that blends a wide variety of genres into a seamless experience. From branching dialogue, to engaging stealth, to fast-paced turn-based combat, in PHP you'll have a variety of ways to take on any situation. We like to call this blend a Role-Playing-Turn-Based-Puzzle-Stealth-Comedy-Game or RPTBPSCG for short.

Pixel Hero Prologue takes place in a diverse, dynamic and satirical world that reacts to your choices and your fourth wall breaking remarks. You'll traverse a vast planet and be able to explore open hub areas, take on side missions or charge through the main campaign, which is full of high octane boss fights, shameless references and gimmicky set pieces.

The Story

Welcome to the wonderful world of wet-works!

You'll play as Golden Cobra, a high ranking operative at the wet-works corporation JACKAL. Your mission is simple, to stop a a group of 9 ex-JACKAL terrorists plan to hijack nuclear weapons and hold the world of Orbis hostage. Along the way you'll be able to recruit a plethora of Squad Members to help you in your battle against a variety of enemies. You'll also encounter numerous NPCs, find secrets, pursue romances, and maybe just save the world.

Tactical Espionage Pixels
Tactical Espionage Pixels

Our subtitle isn't Tactical Espionage Pixels just to be cheeky, Pixel Hero Prologue features a unique blend of organic exploration, branching paths, simple yet satisfying stealth and a turn-based combat system for when things get hot!

Combat

You and up to two other party members will often be thrown into a unique turn-based combat system, where Guarding doesn't exist and combat goes quickly. You have a range of Basic Attacks, an arsenal of powerful Abilities, and a bottomless backpack full of unique Items to take down your opponents before they take you down. While luck can sometimes sway the battle, strategy and forethought will always prevail, and sometimes one well timed Ability can mean the difference between Victory and Defeat.

Stealth

Be it sneaking around enemies through vents or hiding under a cardboard box, fighting isn't the only way to get through the world. Many areas feature your foes on patrol and if you time your movements right you'll sneak past them no problem; or even better you can sneak up behind them for a quick take-down.

Dialogue

Dialogue in Pixel Hero Prologue is branching, organic, quippy and an integral part of the game. Through dialogue you'll learn about the world, find alternate solutions to problems, unlock new options in your missions, break the fourth wall for comedic effect, gain the trust of your fellow squad members, pursue potential romances and scratch your head at obligatory binary moral choices!

The Soundtrack Makes The Game
The Soundtrack Makes The Game

The soundtrack is a vital part of Pixel Hero, and funding it to make it the best version of itself is one of the biggest reasons we've come to Kickstarter. At Project Y Games we believe that the soundtrack can make or break a gaming experience, so we've brought in some great composers to our team, chiefly Chris Fonte. Chris' compositions are strikingly original and always invoke immense amounts of energy and the occasional head-banging. Here's a quick look at some of his work:

"Untitled (VR Edit)" Chris Fonte's Theme for VR Missions, full of excitement and nostalgia.

"Do You Like Hurting Other People? Some of Chris' music is meant to be a referential as the game itself, hopefully these riffs should invoke a few memories in the players.

"Red Alert" Chris' Boss Themes help give Pixel Hero a distinctly epic flavor and add to intense battles.

But that's not the only musically inclined Chris on our team, Chris Catania also does a bit of work for us with a certain mellow flair, that personally reminds me of the RPGs of old.

"A Hunter's Respite" Chris' Themes for safe zones have a certain calming quality about them that keep the player engaged yet feel truly relaxed.

Lastly, but certainly not least, we brought Bryan Teoh onto the project to help us with some of the move complex jazzy tunes, that give Pixel Hero Prologue it's espionage flair.

"At Least They Still Serve Coffee in Hell" One of Bryan's themes for JACKAL HQ that truly invokes that 50s feel, and a sense of peace,  kindness and serenity in the world's most notorious wet-works corporation.

Pixels! Because That's In Style!
Pixels! Because That's In Style!

Pixel Hero Prologue started out as little more than concept art for a few characters, one year later and that art has taken on a life of its own! We draw inspiration for the world of Orbis from a multitude of video games and the art is no different. With its adorable and detailed style, PIxel Hero Prologue has a truly unique look to compliment its mildly familiar characters. Just take a look at some of the heroes and villains:

Behind Every Great Game is a Mildly Stressed Team
Behind Every Great Game is a Mildly Stressed Team

Project Y Games is a tight-knit group of college students who set out to make great games and tell compelling and entertaining stories.

Alessandro Arena-DeRosa - Project Lead, Artists, Designer, Writer:

(It me!) I've dedicated most of my to video games since I first played Day of the Tentacle on my brother's old PC. Since then I've had a passion for all kinds of narrative stories, be they Fable or Donkey Kong 64. I started Pixel Hero (then called Project Y) almost 3 years ago when I first tried to teach myself pixel art. Since then I've made hundreds of pixelations, studied game design techniques, drafted scripts and in the last year finally made Pixel Hero a reality. With the sole exception of the soundtrack I've been able to do all of the work for the game (albeit at a slower pace than I'd prefer) and if the Kickstarter succeeds I'll be able to dedicate the time that I want to in order to fully realize the light-hearted world of Orbis.

Chris "FIzz" Fonte - Lead Musician

Chris is a master of video game music, who had a natural talent for it since his first track. Though Pixel Hero Prologue is his first full video game project, his work speaks for itself and captures the world of Orbis in a way that few others can. Armed with LMMS and a head full music ideas, Chris will be able to create stunning tracks with the money we raise from this Kickstarter and will be in charge of the bulk of the soundtrack.

Chris Catania - Lead Orchestrator

Sometimes a soundtrack needs a more choral flair, something with a more classical tone to it, and this is where Chris comes in. Composing epic ballads and symphonic poems, we'll probably be using a portion of the Kickstarter money to buy Chris software so we can get the best quality sound and music. He also mains Samus in Project M, so there's that.

Matt Leonard - Lead QA Tester

Behind every great game there's a QA tester who is continuously face-palming at the errors they find, and at Project Y Games, that QA Tester is Matt. An avid fan of video games great and small, he gives expert feedback on our project and checks every corner of our game for bugs like he was a Katamari!

Why We Need You, Where The Money is Going and Accountability
Why We Need You, Where The Money is Going and Accountability

Here at Project Y Games we're not trying to take your money... I mean we are, but we're doing it to realize the vision of an immense and polished game. Pixel Hero Prologue is going to take a lot of hard work and effort to make, and also money... which is where you come in!

Our current budget is $3,000 - $150 of which will go directly to Kickstarter fees right off the bat and about $500 of which will be covering the cost to produce VR Missions (as many of the assets, songs, software and engines will also be used in Pixel Hero Prologue). The rest will go mainly to music, a few minor cost of living expenses for the team and a little set aside for any unforeseen costs or exciting opportunities.

So we're turning to Kickstarter to fund the Soundtrack, cover our previous costs and make Pixel Hero Prologue the best that it can be!

Accountability & Transparency

We here at Project Y Games appreciate that you're trusting your money to us and we want to honor that trust as best we can! We're aiming for complete accountability and more importantly transparency in three ways:

The first is our (Victory) Road Map which shows how long we think each stage of development will take based off of how long the demo took to make. We'll constantly be updating this map and showing off what's complete, and it'll help hold us accountable if we start to slip in development.

The second is our Vault Tracker, we'll start this once the campaign is finished and (if we come in on or above goal) the Vault Tracker will start at however much the campaign made. Every time we dip into that pool for development you'll get to see when and why it happened.

The third is Weekly Updates during the campaign and once the campaign is finished. These will usually be brief updates to show you what we're working on and get whatever feedback we can as well as occasionally giving updates on the Vault Tracker and the (Victory) Road Map and generally keeping excitement for the game up!

We hope that by doing this we can maintain transparency and keep backers informed on where their money is going as well as keep you all entertained and interested!

[(Victory) Road Map Coming Soon...]

What happens if you over-fund? We have a few interesting stretch goals planned up to $6,000 after that we'll put in all the money towards a better soundtrack and bringing in more talent on to the project for... well whatever we can think of. And trust me when I say I will make sure this soundtrack is as big and awesome as it can possibly be.

When the Game Releases...

Will it have DRM? Ha, like we'd bother wasting time trying to figure out how to code DRM. We don't really believe in DRM either so, no.

How much will the game cost? Well, we're hoping to set up a Pay-What-You-Want model, it's important to remember that we're making Pixel Hero Prologue because we want to share it with the world and we're only asking with money so we can make it a reality in the foreseeable future and make it up to the standards that I want it to be at. (That said, many of the rewards from the Kickstarter including the Soundtrack and Design Works probably won't be available for free if they ever release post-Kickstarter)

Will it be on Steam or Steam Greenlight? Yes! $100 of the funding is going to Steam Greenlight which will likely happen shortly after the campaign (if we're successful), from there it's going to be an uphill battle to get the votes, and we'll be relying on the community if you want to see it on Steam, otherwise we'll simply deliver the game via a download link to the the game itself.

Will it run on Mac or Linux? Maybe. The PC version will always take priority, but if we over-fund we'll be able recruit someone to help port the game to Mac and then Linux (either way we may end up doing it ourselves after release, but we can't promise when this will be)

What are the minimum specs to run the game at max graphics? I'm not acknowledging this one with a reply.

Risks and challenges

We've been doing a lot of planning, hard work and networking over the past year to make Pixel Hero Prologue a reality. That said, making a game is never an easy undertaking, and developers have to deal with a variety of risks. Here's how we are dealing with and plan to deal with each:

RELEASE RISK: This is the biggest one, will the game ship on time? Our hope is to have Pixel Hero Prologue complete by August of next year, since most of the team are students it will give us two solid summers to pour our hearts and souls into the game. That estimate could very well slip to an earlier or later date, but we plan to keep backers informed every step of the way and we'll be sure to follow our (Victory) Road Map as closely as possible! We'll also be sure to be releasing test builds as we go for those interested in helping us test...For Science! In an ideal world we'd also be considering releasing the game on Early Access to be hip like that, but this has yet to be decided.

BUG RISK: Aside from a possible invasion from alien bugs, this relates to the fact that there WILL be bugs in every build that isn't the final one, we'll do our best to squish them first, but many will slip under our radar. We've got a QA tester on our team to search for these (and spelling errors) but we're also going to turn to the community to help us hunt for as many as they can find as well... we don't want a repeat of Assassin's Creed: Unity any more than you do. If we do have bugs we at least want them to be charming, like ones in Bethesda's games.

HUMOR RISK: While we call Pixel Hero Prologue a comedy game, it's important to note that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the same applies to farting jokes. While we try to keep as varied a sense of humor as possible, there are some who may not find Pixel Hero at all funny, and we admit that *gasp* there may even be a serious moment or two in the game... so yeah... if you don't laugh we hope you enjoy the intricate lore, thoughtful game design and character building!
