My name is Laura Alvarez, I'm a Mexican Visual Artist and for the last 2 years I have dedicated myself to register the upswing of Drag Queen culture in my hometown, Monterrey, N.L. which is well known for being one of the most homophobic and sexist cities in México, ranking 4th place in murders related to homophobia.
I began to document the Drag scene with the intention of leaving a visual record of a sexual and ideological revolution that came to transform and transgress my city’s culture. Amid the chaos that every revolution brings, the drag scene slowly has left the underground bar scene of the city to become a movement increasingly visible, influential and particularly relevant, both in the nightlife and in cultural venues where the role of gender in art and especially in our society has been questioned once again.
The Adolfo Prieto School, located within the Fundidora Park, which is one of the most important art schools in Monterrey has provided a space to mount a photographic exhibition dedicated to the work done in the past 2 years. With this, I not only materialized my first individual exhibition as an artist, but also, I give life to the first exhibition about the Drag Queen culture in Monterrey. Hoping with this, it would continue opening up new ways of exploring the possibilities of Drag in art and in culture.
