I am a 23 year old musician and an artist based between Brighton and Suffolk. A few months ago, prompted by the news of the devastating decline in the bee population, I devised a new project 'Bee-Composed'. This project forms part of my larger project 'Decomposed', which has evolved out of another installation that I exhibited at the Brighton Dome in 2012. 'Decomposed' involves adapting, decomposing, recording and filming three old pianos in three different natural habitats in Suffolk, and then 'harvesting' the original sounds and images to create a new EP and exhibition.
'Bee-Composed', (Piano 1), meanwhile, involves transforming a piano into a working bee-hive with an apiarist and a wood-sculptor. Once the bees are settled in their new home, I will install audio visual recording equipment into the body of the piano to capture the harmonics of the bees interacting with the piano strings and live footage of the hive that will feed into a link on my website www.lilyhuntergreen.com - along the lines of the BBC's 'Spring Watch'. I will then 'harvest' these recordings - along with the honey (the honey will be used in the Honey Dinner - see my perks!) - and use them to create a new EP and exhibition. I will also be running workshops with local schoolchildren to raise awareness of the threat to the bees - and to us - if we don't do something to stop their decline.
Someone has donated the piano, someone else has offered to house the project and host the children's workshops, and lots of other wonderful people have offered their services for free. However, I still need to buy all of the bee-keeping equipment, the building materials and the recording equipment. I'd also really like to be able to reimburse Alex, the wood sculptor, for his time and inspiration.
Risks and challenges
There are obviously risks and challenges in converting an old piano into a bee-hive. Will it, won't it, work? Will the bees like living in a piano? I won't know the answer to those questions until I get started. What I do know however is that all of the beekeepers, musicians, and carpenters who have advised me on the project to date are confident that it will work and are really excited about it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
