About

Children are excited to play BUZZZ because it's a game that requires constant interaction. We've had children tell us that playing BUZZZ is more fun than a video game because they have so many opportunities to engage with one another by:

1) trading Cards to get a card they need,

2) testing each other's knowledge of honeybees by asking each other BUZZZ question cards,

3) stopping a player from gaining points by playing a problem card,

4) forcing a player to lose points by playing a Junk Food card and

5) making a player, who forgets to read aloud their problem or solution card, lose a turn by shouting out "BUZZZ".

BUZZZ also invites children to strategize in a fun way as they determine whether to spend their turn blocking another player's progress by giving them a problem card or racing to win by putting down point cards.

If a player wants to trade cards, they have to figure out the best deal to tempt another player.

Children spend a lot of time laughing as they also learn about honeybees.

Watch the video to see how to play ...

To help children

1) … foster a problem-solving attitude that they can apply to any challenging situation.

2)  … recognize that it often takes a community to solve our most pressing problems.

3) … get involved in solving a real world problem that directly affects them.

BUZZZ cards help children develop a problem-solving mindset

The honeybee population has been declining at an alarming rate. U.S. honey bee colony counts have decreased by an estimated 50 percent since the 1950’s. This statistic is important for all of us humans, because honeybees play a starring role in our food supply, pollinating about 1/3 of all the foods we eat.

So, let's work together to raise awareness about this important issue!

Here's what players have to say ...

"I played Buzzz with my parents, 77 and 83, when my daughter, 16, and I visited them in Florida. We sat around the table laughing and having a great time. My father who is an expert on anything that has 6 legs was so enthusiastic when he knew the answers. My mother had some trouble but learned a lot. It was so much fun! A game for any age!!!!"

                              — Jodi Balsamo, Santa Fe, NM —

*********************************************************************************************

"We played the game and love it! The story is very good and an easy way to learn the facts. My son, who is not a reader, asked to read the questions when we played; I was pleasantly surprised. So, good game and I'm looking forward to it being sold."

                             — Mary Lynn Collins, Santa Fe, NM —

*********************************************************************************************

"Thanks for the preview edition of the card game. My son has really enjoyed having me quiz him on the fact cards. Yesterday, while in the car, he was quizzing his friend to see if she knew what made drones different from other bees… no proboscis, no wings, or no stinger?"

            — Canton Becker, Website Designer, Dad, Santa Fe, NM —

*********************************************************************************************

"The fifth graders I played with loved the competitive nature of the game, and they were interacting throughout the entire game, reading problem and solution cards. After playing, they wanted to know more about what was happening to the bees. Buzzz is a great way to stimulate students to think about how their future can be impacted by the way we take care of the environment."

              — Trudy Bortz, Elementary Teacher, Lafayette, CO —

Children (and adults) are excited to play BUZZZ because it's a game that provides constant interaction, offers a nice balance of competition and cooperation, and provides opportunities for strategizing.

Players can:

  • Trade Cards to get a card they need
  • Ask each other BUZZZ question cards
  • Stop a player from gaining points by playing a Problem Card
  • Force a player to lose points by playing a Junk Food card
  • Make players lose a turn by saying "BUZZZ" if they forget to read aloud their problem or solution card.

Also, kids like looking at the "kid-cool" art created by Santa Fe artist Jason Poole.

"I love the concept of your game and am so excited that it exists! I've mentioned this before, but, as you've seen, this bee story is a hook for students. Teachers are looking for tools like this story to engage their classes. For me, I'm looking for resources to share with them beyond the time when I'm visiting, and having this game as a pre/post activity is awesome!!"

"Great work! As an educator of kids on the honeybee, it is wonderful to see projects such as yours."

*********************************************************************************************

"The story is very well written. You’ve obviously done a lot of research. Good luck with your project."

                         — Steve Wall, Beekeeper, Santa Fe, NM —

"Very educational: we all learned a number of facts we did not know before we started the game, 'we' being a group of four players, ages 11, 14, 38 and 51! The discussions were very fun and broadened everyone’s perspective and learning. You succeed very well in keeping the game moving for younger people. All the best !!!!! I will use this game in the summer time when I am outside with kids and we focus on insects."

"I believe Buzzz is a wonderful teaching tool that is fun and helps to raise awareness of the plight of our honeybees. It also helps children see ways they can make a difference. I really am so excited about this. I've been brain storming this weekend and I would like to bring it up to my beekeeping club. My thoughts were more of trying to purchase many decks of these cards. I would love to visit some schools and give a presentation to the benefits and love of beekeeping to the younger students. Get them thinking environmental accountability, etc. Then give their classroom a set of cards so they continue to be reminded."

  • 100 Cards
  • Rules - If you want to see them now, you can download BUZZZ rules at: www.singingturtle.com/shop/buzzz-rules
  • For the Sake of the Hive, a story about the lives of two worker bees. This story comes as a free download when you buy the game. See below.

Before children play, they have the opportunity to read For the Sake of the Hive, a free, downloadable booklet that comes with the game. This booklet makes the connection between honeybee pollination and our food supply. It also contains an entertaining story about the lives of two worker bees that provides answers to BUZZZ questions cards.

If they don't have time to read the story, children can learn their bee facts by quizzing each other on the question cards once before starting an actual game.

Our goal is to bring BUZZZ into classrooms and households all across the nation and beyond. We want to raise awareness about problems facing honeybees and show people how they can become part of the solution.

The goal of BUZZZ is to collect 100 Flower Point cards. Players must correctly answer a question card that tests their knowledge of honeybees, before laying down a 10 or 20-point flower card.

As players race to collect the winning number of flower points, they take steps to stop other players from gaining points.

Children stop their opponents from gaining points by giving them a Problem Card. These problem cards mirror actual problems facing today's honeybee population. Once stopped, players must find a solution card that solves the problem before laying down additional points. A player can also get lucky and pick up a Queen Bee card. This allows them to solve any Problem Card!

Players can force another player to discard points with a Bee Junk Food card.

Being educators, we couldn't stop ourselves from creating an entire curriculum about honeybees!

If you visit our website, www.SingingTurtle.com, you'll see the other educational products we've created and produced such as the Algebra Survival Guide and Workbook. We have a lot of connections in the manufacturing world, and we never give up! Plus, we've already found a manufacturer ready to help us :)

Thanks to our many helpers!

Thanks to all the teachers in Santa Fe, NM who invited us into their classrooms so we could test the game. Thanks to all the children who gave us invaluable feedback about what made the game fun, and told us how playing the game helped them understand the importance of honeybees. Thanks to my friends and family for their support and constructive criticism. Thanks to BUZZZ reviewers who put time and energy into playing the game and offering feedback. Thanks to all the beekeepers who edited my facts and cheered me on! Thanks to artist Jason Poole who went above and beyond to create amazing images.

Did you know honeybees pollinate 1/3 of our food supply and they are disappearing at an alarming rate?

BUZZZ is a FUN game the educates children about the plight of honeybees and empowers them to take small but meaningful actions to support honeybees.

Children love learning about the world around them, especially if they can do something to make a difference.

Risks and challenges

Any project can have delays. To prevent delays, we've connected with a manufacturer that is just waiting for our okay to move forward. We don't expect delays. But, we'll definitely keep in touch with all of you every step of the way.
