B-SHIELD: THE PORTABLE BICYCLE WINDSCREEN
Hello everyone, my name is Pippo Baiamonte.
I have been working for decades as a mechanic and auto electrician in my own auto electric shop.
In the last two years I spent countless hours developing this project together with my wife Maria Zammito and my team mate Dario Di Martino.
We share a passion for innovation, technology and... bikes!
The diffusion of bicycles as environmentally sustainable vehicles makes me think of how the bicycle culture roots and changes a biker's lifestyle.
I recently visited Northern Europe and saw people cycling in the biting cold with the wind striking their faces.
Neither mud nor snow seemed to intimidate them.
Some were even getting soaking wet.
I truly admired their determination but I couldn't help wondering:
“How can you just go out cycling and let the cold wind dry your eyes, turn your face red, irritated and cracked?
How can you let meteorological conditions turn a healthy habit into a health threat?”
In recent years the weather is getting less and less predictable.
We often witness seasons changing within a day.
If the weather is bad, some people may just avoid cycling.
Some might find themselves in an unpredicted circumstance.
How many times have you wished for (and deserved) some extra protection while riding your bicycle?
I live in a country whose weather generally fits the Mediterranean climate stereotype, so I often choose to get out on my bike – as long as the weather is fine.
On wet or windy days, I go by car.
But busy roads and traffic congestions are daily issues which make me regret leaving my bike at home.
So going out on my bike is a good idea.
Most times.
However, even when I am riding on a sunny day sudden weather changes can occur...
...and when they do - you just have to face them.
This project traces its roots back in the '90s.
Always driven by the passion for the two wheels, I used to go out on my scooter.
At some point I remember getting completely drenched by the rain.
It happened once.
Twice.
On the third time, I got fed up:
“Enough's enough! I gotta do something!”
And that's when I came up with the idea of a foldable windscreen for scooters.
In the mid 90's the prototype for my invention was exhibited at “I Cervelloni”, a TV show based on a competition between various inventors resulting in one overall winner.
The show aired on Rai Uno, the flagship television channel of Italy's national public service broadcaster (and the most watched television channel in the country).
I won the competition, as you can see in the video below:
Then a few years ago we came up with the basic idea for the B-Shield: we wanted to create a folding windscreen for bicycles.
We spent countless hours developing the concept, drawing parts on paper first, then modeling 3D components on a CAD software.
Then we crafted the prototypes, modified parts, tried several materials and tested their resistance.
We also wanted to find a solution that could make the B-Shield adaptable to different bicycles, including electric bicycles.
That was quite a challenge.
We kept squeezing our brains until we came up with the latest version of the windscreen shown in these pages, which however is still a prototype and does not represent the final product.
With this version of the B-Shield we met our goals and we achieved the features we originally wanted:
Can be easily carried in rucksacks and bags and unfolded when needed
Once folded, the overall length is that of 2 smartphones
1 lb ~ 450 g, weighs more or less as a pocketsize umbrella
Carbon Fiber frame for the Black Version and Aluminum frame for the Custom Version
The screen is made of transparent PolyVinylChloride (PVC)
It can be easily mounted onto most commercial bicycles and electric bicycles
It can be washed upon need using a detergent
Fits any 22 mm commercial city bike’s handlebar, as well as any 22 mm electric bicycle's handlebar
No holes and no drills on your bicycle!
After installing the “fixed” rack it takes 1 minute to mount the windscreen and latch the corners onto the frame
Fold it, store it in its own case and tie it to your bike or put it in your bag
Reflectors provide extra visibility and safety in the dark
This is a product of Italian creativity, designed to keep up the world acknowledged Italian Design standards
The B-Shield will be available in 2 versions:
CARBON BLACK VERSION
Carbon Fiber frame, only available in BLACK colour.
CUSTOM VERSION: Black-painted Aluminium frame, nylon parts available in BLACK, ORANGE, FUCHSIA, BLUE or YELLOW colour as shown below:
We trust in your support for the development of this project, both ours and yours - if you choose to be a backer here on Kickstarter. Please share this page with all your friends through the social media to reach as many people as possible. Thanks!
Risiken und Herausforderungen
If the B-Shield is successfully funded we are confident we will be able to produce the windscreens and have them sent to you by February 2017.
In the last year, we have been working around the clock refining our designs: several prototypes have been developed and countless hours have been spent enhancing the B-Shield to make it as good as we intended it to be.
In case we'll reach our stretch goal thanks to your kind support, we'll go on with the development of these future steps.
We will make every effort to deliver the product and rewards on time, and could even deliver the product before expected.
However, there could be unforeseen circumstances that may present themselves during early production.
As with any project that involves technology, there might always be schedule risks associated with manufacturing and logistics.
We made an estimation of production time needed and a business plan.
We compared different shipping company prices, but couriers can delay the delivery sometimes and of course we can't predict what does not directly depend on us, so it could always happen that the product won't arrive on the exact prearranged day.
We ask for your patience, and promise to deliver a quality product to each and every backer as soon as possible.
In any case, we will keep you informed of any changes.
Thank you for helping us make this product a reality!
