August 14-16, 2015
The Boreal Bash events are a place where photographers can come together, learn from each other, drink and be merry. Previous Bashes have featured some of the world’s finest photographers, editors and art directors from Magnum Photos, The New York Times, VII Photo, The Telegraph Magazine and The Sochi Project. It is our goal to keep these events educational, informal and most importantly, accessible.
Founded in Toronto in 2010, Boreal Collective is the common ground between internationally based photographers Laurence Butet-Roch, Aaron Vincent Elkaim, Rafal Gerszak, Brett Gundlock, Johan Hallberg-Campbell, Matt Lutton, Eamon Mac Mahon, Mauricio Palos, Jonathan Taggart and Ian Willms. They are united by a desire to document humanity and its intricate realities in our rapidly evolving world. From photojournalism to contemporary photography, each member's individual practice is as diverse as their cultural and social backgrounds. It is the interplay between them that allows Boreal to carry out far-reaching projects that inspire greater creative and social consciousness.
Boreal Collective's mandate is to explore complex narratives and communicate stories visually, with patience, commitment and integrity. In addition to enriching the practices of its members, Boreal Collective has been the starting point for grassroots exhibitions, educational events, publishing initiatives and artistic collaborations that have involved photographers from all over the world. At a time when the photographic industry is being dismantled, Boreal seeks to rise to the challenge of taking an active role in its redefinition.
This summer, we are planning our third Boreal Bash, which is an open event for anyone who wishes to attend. It’s our goal to provide an opportunity for photographers, editors and curators from all disciplines and levels of experience can meet and interact casually. This year, we are ready to bring in influential and innovative names from all corners of the photography industry, with a special focus on young photography collectives like Boreal.
We have officially invited photography collectives MJR, Prime and #Dysturb. We plan to invite other speakers as well. The program of events includes a gala event, portfolio reviews and presentations by our guest speakers, plus an exhibition and Boreal Collective’s first ever documentary photography workshop at our partner gallery venue, O’Born Contemporary. Full details can be found here.
Because some of the Bash events are free to the public, we are relying on your support to make it happen. So please be generous if you can, and we will see you in August!

Risks and challenges
Our entire budget for the bash is $12,000. Projected travel expenses alone for collectives and speakers is $7,000. We hope for this Kickstarter to raise half of the budget, the other half we will be seeking through private sponsorship. Your support is crucial to making this event a reality. Any money we get that goes over our goal will be invested directly back into the bash.
We want to thank support from our sponsors: The Bash is proudly presented by The Magenta Foundation, NAMARA Represents. The exhibition is sponsored by O'Born Contemporary and our media partner Narratively. Also thanks to sponsors Toronto Image works and Downtown Camera.
