About this project
Welcome to the KickStarter campaign! With your support we are bringing you this gorgeous new book - plus exclusive rewards!
'The Cycling Jersey - Craftsmanship, Speed & Style' is the first volume to provide an in-depth study into the history and evolution of the iconic cycling jersey.
A completed and proofed 200 page large format coffee table book, illustrated with over 400 images showcasing a wealth of jerseys and cycling ephemera, alongside many classic and previously unpublished archive images.
Including the first hand accounts from the riders who wore them, the designers who create them and the collectors who now covet them.
The book is complete with interviews with the world's leading jersey aficionados and collectors, and the creative teams behind the breakthrough and defining designs of the modern era from racewear brands Castelli, Sportful and Rapha.
The book also features specially commissioned essays from key writers including the cycling correspondent William Fotheringham, menswear commentator Josh Sims & celebrated Grand Tour cyclist David Millar.
'The Cycling Jersey' is a book created for, and with the participation of, the growing network of devotees who appreciate the culture, craft and heritage of these iconic items.
Rather than create a predictable catalogue of jersey designs, I set out to really get under the skin of the subject - to meet the key figures at the centre of this growing culture.
This took me on a journey across Europe to document the accounts first hand from these individuals, all driven by the same passion for the subject.
To best examine the rich and diverse subjects surrounding the cycling jersey this book is divided into four main chapters:
A chronological study examining over 50 years of the evolution of jersey designs from 30 professional teams from across the globe.
All items featured in the title are original period pieces - there are no reproduction items in this book.
The chapter also includes a wealth of priceless rider worn jerseys from the archives of the Parisian auction house Drouot, the majority of these seen in print here for the first time.
Chapter concludes with the celebrated National, World Champion & Grand Tour jerseys along with a specially commissioned essay on the Maillot Jaune by acclaimed cycling journalist, and best selling author on the subject, William Fotheringham.
From its humble roots this chapter investigates how the jersey came to evolve into the technical piece of racing equipment that it is today.
Featuring behind the scenes images and interviews at major manufacturers in both Italy and the U.K to hear the insights of their leading jersey designers, responsible for a range of breakthrough designs which continue the evolution of this item of clothing into the 21st Century.
This chapter examines timeless jersey and rider associations from six titans of the sport.
These riders, ordered chronologically, herald from the European countries with the strongest historical links with the sport - France, Italy and Belgium.
Starting with the Italian style icon Fausto Coppi and concluding with the explosive Bernard Hinault of France, these feted riders life stories are complimented with rare archive images highlighting their exploits alongside their personally worn team jerseys.
This final chapter examines the personal stories from the growing number of aficionados who champion the lasting legacy of the cycling jersey.
These interviews with some of Europe's leading collectors showcase their fine items as well as providing an insight into each of their personal motives and passions, which inspire them to amass these pieces from cycling's rich heritage.

As my own personal collection of jerseys grew, I began photographing them and created the 'threebackpockets' Instagram account in order to share the images, leading me to form links with a host of appreciative collectors, designers and manufacturers.
Then in late 2015 I was approached by a newly formed publisher to produce this book on the subject.
Thanks to the strong links formed with the global cycling community on Instagram, I now had the opportunity to reach out to these contributors in person in order to share their thoughts and insights within the pages of this book.
This book, which was photographed, designed and written by myself, was handed over as a completed manuscript to the publishers, as contracted, in July of 2016, in order to then be published as scheduled in October.
Shortly after handing over the completed print-ready files I received the unexpected news that the host publishing group were ending their association with the imprint that had commissioned me to create the book. A decision that left both my own, and the titles of the other authors concerned, facing an uncertain future.
After a pretty frustrating nine month wait, punctuated with discussions with lawyers, I finally received the news in May of this year that the full publishing rights would be returned to me - so time to get things moving!
While I had received interest in the title from a number of other publishers, I decided this was not the best option, as their advance scheduling on releases would mean that if I went with them, the book would not be out without a further wait well into 2018.
So, in steps KickStarter! Which I feel is the perfect platform to finally see this book released...
This is a book that has it's foundations in the links formed with the passionate members of the global cycling community on social media, and with your continued support, passion and generosity this book now has the chance to be published together - let's make it happen!
The book is available to pre-order now during this three week KickStarter campaign - running during the course of this years Tour de France. The finished files are already with the printers and they are standing by ready to roll the presses as soon as the target amount has been reached.
Making a book doesn't have to cost €18,000, but believe me I haven't come this far to now create a cheaply produced book.
I'm producing the book on a relatively limited print run, and this inevitably pushes up the production cost per unit.
A major publisher will print copies in the tens of thousands, which drops the unit cost price considerably - something which is unfortunately not an option for me to do as a one man operation.
Due to this our main cost is the book printing, and with quality a priority this title will be printed by one of Frances major printing presses. Printed on an Offset press, this ensures the highest quality printing that these images deserve.
Pages will be on 150 gsm stock and encased in a hard back cover - complete with dust jacket. This large format title will be one you'll want to keep proudly on your bookshelf, or displayed on your coffee table as the format suggests.
The book features a host of beautiful items and archive images, so of course it's my wish for them to be contained within a beautifully manufactured book.
The other main cost involved is postage, and to send a big 1.5kg book off around the world your postman (or lady) want their dues too. Postage of this item from France clocks in at €15.00 to Europe and €18.00 for the rest of the world - not cheap!
The figure of €18,000 does seem like a huge sum, but to break it down this equates to between 150 to 350 pre-orders of the book, depending on the selected edition of the book you'd like to purchase.
The rewards are a great chance for me to offer you something extra when you support this KickStarter campaign.
Aside from the Standard edition of the book I also have the option for some great bonuses, that if selected you'll be helping to ensure that I reach my target amount sooner, ensuring that the book gets printed and you receive your copy, or copies!
KickStarter is an 'all or nothing' funding platform, if the total funding target does not get reached by the end of the campaign your money pledged will not be collected - rather than receiving the book that you're helping to produce.
Have your name printed in the book on a specially designed Supporters page. Open to a limited number of places this page, which will feature in every copy of the book, will list the names of all those people who pledged to support this reward.
Rather than just a dull typed list, your name will feature as part of this iconic image of the great Italian rider Fausto Coppi, taken as he celebrated his win of the 1952 Tour de France with a lap of honour at the Parc des Princes velodrome in Paris.
Your copy of the book will also be personally signed and edition numbered of 300 by myself.
This reward is limited to 300 places - get involved and be part of it!
Along with your name printed in the book on the Supporters page as listed above, by pledging to support this reward you'll also receive this limited edition print.
While prints featuring illustrations of Grand Tour jerseys are relatively easy to come by, those featuring the actual jerseys themselves are not.
Strictly limited to 150 examples, and available exclusively with this KickStarter campaign, this fine art print showcases a host of Tour de France classification winners jerseys dating from 1953 to 2007.
These are the very items that were worn on the riders backs, from legends such as Bobet, Anquetil, Maertens and Contador.
The print is at a size of 30x45cm, all ready to be framed in a 40x50cm frame of your choice as illustrated.
These items will be printed and sent out to supporters as soon as this campaign ends on the 23rd July.
Your copy of the book will also be personally signed and edition numbered of 150 by myself.
Along with the personal supporters page I've also set aside a page to showcase the corporate supporters of the book.
Limited to 20 places only, it provides the opportunity for you to have your cycling brands logo and website printed and featured in every edition of the book.
Once you've completed your pledge, simply send me a high res file of your logo and your website URL and it will be added to the page prior to commencing the print run.
By supporting this reward you will also receive 3 copies of the book delivered to the address, or multiple addresses of your choice.
Risks and challenges
(Don't be too alarmed at this heading above - it's part of the Kick Starter template).
As far as risks and challenges go, the only real one is that I don't secure the total funding target - so please do spread the word of this campaign as much as you can to family, friends, riding buddies and fellow cycling club members in order to help this production cost target get reached.
This is a book that already owes much to the strong family bond of global cycling community - and with one last push from this same network of great people this book can finally be manufactured and put out into the world.
The book is finished, proofed and ready to be sent to the presses. Prototype editions have already been printed and these feature here on the campaign page.
As soon as the Kick Starter campaign is finished I begin the production run, here's a breakdown:
1st > 23rd July : Kick Starter campaign active
23rd July : Supporters names added and reward prints sent out
1st August : Book production starts
15th September : Shipping of finished books commences
Regular updates will be posted here and on the Instagram: threebackpockets
