Noochie Golf is a miniature golf game for your home. It has four pieces that can be arranged any way you like, up to 15 combinations!
My husband and I took our sons to a miniature golf park in Phoenix, Arizona. Summers are extremely hot in the desert and the kids are indoors for the harshest parts of summer. The boys spent that summer constructing miniature golf courses out of the toys they had. Over this and around that they hit the ball, propelled by hockey sticks.
I searched for a "build it yourself" golf course and couldn't find one. With help from the boys as to what the toy should do, I decided to file a provisional patent for the concept. My husband created drawings and we decided to name it after our youngest son, The Nooch.
Our good friend Jim, an engineer, offered to help make a prototype. We made one out of wood and another out of Styrofoam. We hired an engineer to make CAD drawings and an intellectual property attorney to file our patents, trademarks and design patents for Noochie Golf.
We had the final, plastic prototype made from the drawings. My husband cut and glued synthetic putting greens and we were ready to go.
Go we did, to The Chicago Toy & Game Fair in November 2013. The show was open to the public and it was amazing!
After seeing the crowd response our decision was made. Noochie Golf must be manufactured. We made our final changes to the design with taller walls on the hole piece, colored walls and injection molded plastic for added durability. The $100,000 we are campaigning for is to produce the first five thousand sets. I have already cashed in my 401k for the molds and startup costs. We will sell online to start and work our way into brick and mortar stores later. Noochie Golf will retail for $75.00, shipping included in the U.S.
Risks and challenges
As with any new product, failure is a possibility. With help from The Innovation Advancement Program at Arizona State University, we researched the market for a product like Noochie Golf and what price range golf toys sell for.
Their report said - "In 2011, Outdoor and Sports toys accounted for 8.2% of the toy and game market in the United States, $2.8 billion. The Toy Industry Association reported that the "many ways to play" concept was extremely popular at the 109th International Toy Fair."
- Noochie Golf's 15 combinations give a child a creative outlet to setting up the game for play.
Static golf games, no ability to change the set up, for children and adults range in price from 15-400 dollars. We feel our price point is affordable for the options and features it delivers. the synthetic putting grass also appeals to adults who want to practice their short game.
Our plan of online selling initially is our main risk. We will mitigate this risk by using a professional web designer with experience in product marketing and sales. As a startup company we have no sales numbers to back us up or get us a good deal with brick and mortar stores. Most online shoppers are turned off by the addition shipping costs. We take the percentage a brick and mortar store would require from us and use that to pay for the shipping ourselves.
This is our passion, our family project and our children's dream. We will do whatever is necessary to make this project successful.
