About

Studio Yōkai is a new and independent game development studio with a focus on games for mobile devices.The dream at Studio Yōkai is to make gaming meaningful. I want to engage people in fresh new ways with accessible, delightful games and experiences. I'm calling this experiment in fun - PROJECT GALLOUILE.

How am I going to accomplish this incredible experiment, I plan on doing this by telling great stories, using AAA art, programming and sound.

As a species, before books, we drew pictures on cave walls and passed our history on through stories told around the fire. We told stories of our past, of our hopes for the future, our gods and the monsters that lurked beyond the firelight.

The key to a great game is the story, the reason something did or didn’t happen. When the most unlikely of characters find themselves thrust into a position from which there is no where to go but up - what do you do?

There are many things that go bump in the night, things of myth, stories told to frighten children.

One night while everyone else slept, you did not.

In the dark, while others dreamt, you saw something no one else has seen in more than six centuries.

That night you cried while your family lay silently in their beds.

That was 300 years ago, and  you still haven't slept.

 Alchemy is an interesting an influential philosophical tradition whose practitioners have, from antiquity, claimed it to be the precursor to profound powers. The defining objectives of alchemy are varied but historically have typically included one or more of the following goals: the creation of the fabled philosopher's stone; the ability to transmute base metals into the noble metals (gold or silver); and development of an elixir of life, which would confer youth and longevity.

Centuries ago, Greymon Isle was your home. There, your family line were the caregivers and keepers of the "Prima Materia" or as it has become known - the Angelic Stone.

Some of the character types available are human, some are not. The thing I've enjoyed about crafting this scenario is that the motivations of which ever character and race types are played - are different than those of the other character races. What one wants might be a polar opposite of the players motivation. The world around you will react to your motivations and failures. The person you met yesterday could be your enemy tomorrow.

PROJECT GALLOUILE

You will be drawn in with its deep storyline, fantastic art and if you love to explore, build and conquer -  this game is for you. It’s the story, the game mechanics and the thrill of the unknown that pulls you in. However, it's the story, the game AI that will create a world for you to explore and keep you coming back for more.

The aim of this game is to provide a large and diverse world that is never the same twice. Using randomly generated terrain, we will be able to provide a unique over world, dungeons and towns that the player will be able to explore. Certain events can at times cause the world to change and provide the player with a world that appears to actually be growing and changing around them.

While there is a linear experience to enjoy, it can be played like a campaign at any time, or you can enjoy the open ended aspect of the game as you protect the last of them - something your family has done since your ancestors colonized Greymon Isle.

I have huge ambitions for this game, code named Project Gallouile - it’s the working title. The initial release is going to be for PC, iPad, iPhone and Android. If the game is received favorably by you, our supporters – we hope to port this superb game to Sony PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. Should that happen, the story becomes deeper, more involved. In a perfect world, we would like the ability to add far away lands, and additional dungeons.

We have planed to achieve points in the game where you can accomplish goals and walk away. If you want to continue on, try to think of it as the never ending story.

In addition to playing on your own or with friends, each week will be a company sponsored event open to all.

Game Mechanics

Building - Much like other well known sandbox-craft games, the terrain is something that is completely under your control. With the aid of certain items

Platform

Platforms: Windows and Linux, via Steam and our website. iOS and Android will have a different version to the PC and Linux counterparts due to limitations.

PLAYSTATION 4 and Xbox One will only be released should the stretch goals be met.

And that’s why we’ve turned to Kickstarter and its wonderful community of independent game fans! We can’t think of a better group of people to come to for support and make this project a reality. By hitting our Kickstarter goal, we can complete game production with 3D models that are worthy of our vision. Additional funds will give us the capability to include more 3D modeling in the game, hire studio time with an Academy Award®-winning audio engineer, and enhance the gameplay experience even further.

Details

If the project is successfully funded, we conservatively estimate the alpha to be released two months after funding is received, with beta following closely on it's heels within 90 days and then the final release by our internal March deadline.

Should we reach our stretch goal of funding the release of the PS4 - PC and the Xbox version - there will be so much more to add and updates that would have to be posted and of course we will announce a release date but we would anticipate a late 2015 release.

Estimated release: PC, iPad, iPhone and Android March 2015.

# of Players: This game is primarily a single player game and we would like to focus on that aspect. We do have ideas for multiplayer and co-op modes but we'd only work on it if the multiplayer stretch goal is achieved.

With that said, this project has been designed and built from the ground up with the intention to allow networked play. You can always play through the game by yourself, however, we support and even encourage you to play along with your friends as you adventure throughout the world. Certain locations may even require a team of people to accomplish due to larger difficulties.

In the real world, there are rewards and consequences for all of your actions. Some you pay for now, some you pay for later. Treachery is a big part of this game. Along with the multiplayer portion of the design, combat ws also built from the ground up to work hand in hand with each other. You can hack, slash, block and cast spells in real time as your enemy approaches. Just like the real world, if and when you fall in combat, you stand the chance of loosing your weapons, armor and any other valuables you may have in your possession.

We will be keeping the forums updated daily as work progresses. Screen shots, interviews with the developers and hopefully a weekly Q&A.

Rick Stalder

Rick has worked as a UI artist/designer in the games industry for the last decade. He was the UI Lead Designer for one of the largest game studios in the US and the interactive art director for one of the largest advertising agencies in New York City.

He brings with him a strong knowledge of game design concepts, user interaction as well as artistic talent to move the project along.

Developing a game like this is not easy and comes with a large number of costs associated with it. Your much needed donations will go to supporting a number of direct costs that we need to tackle as well as supporting our time and attention to the project.

  • Programming

     To bring the game alive, give bite to the monsters and put an edge on the villains weapon requires a programmer or two.

  • Music & Sound

     Although I have a large number of talents, music and game sounds are not one of them. This means we will need to look outside our team for help in creating all of these assets.

  • Advertising

     Spreading the word about the game comes with its own set of costs. Distributing the game, holding a community forum, a website and servers can also get expensive. Allowing us to handle these costs means a greater community of people and a better player experience.

  • Support

     There is a large devotion of time required to complete this project, which regardless of what we want is not unlimited. We have full time jobs, families and it's easy for us to become overwhelmed so with your gracious donations to support the project gives us the freedom and flexibility to continue to work and focus our attention where it needs to be.

For those who want to have a more active role in the community, we provide a level above the base which will give them access when we begin our beta of the game as well as access to the beta forums on our website. We value the community around such projects and want to keep the lines of communication open.

Risks and challenges

Having been involved and employed for the last 10+ years as a UI game designer, I have seen about every catastrophe you can dream of. Artists or programmers quit - features have to be dropped due to time constraints, there are hundreds of things that can go wrong.

It's about communication, accountability and planning. If you properly do those things you will succeed at any task.
