For 8 growing seasons I've been teaching and learning about balcony gardening, in the inner city where tens of thousands of people inhabit high-rise buildings, and they have no space for growing food on the ground. In much of the city's landscape, green space is scarce, community gardens are not widely available and organic food costs a lot. So balcony gardens make sense. Balcony gardens feed people and more importantly teach about food and soil.
This little book has an illustration on every page, to help instructions come to life and be more easily understood. Not only can you use this book as a guide for your own growing project, it's full of ideas for group activities and any number of its pages can be copied as stand-alone worksheets.
The design is beautiful and the hand-drawn pictures would be a joy for kids to color, while they learn about seeds, plants and growing.
As of now, only a few hundred copies of An Illustrated Guide to Growing Food On Your Balcony have ever been printed. Your donations will allow me to send this book to the printer in time for the spring growing season!
New pages will be added in time for the spring print run, including a diagram of a 'worm condo', new illustrations of soil and growing mediums, and more ideas about gardening without a garden. The final copy will be about 50 pages long, with a color cover and black and white illustrations inside. There are already sixty hand-drawn illustrations already completed! And I plan to add another fully illustrated six pages for this next printing.
By pledging in advance for 1 or more copies, you will not only support the printing of your own copy but also contribute to many more books getting printed and distributed for educational purposes.
If I reach my goal the books will be printed in sufficient quantity to allow community groups or educators a discounted price and to provide booklets free-of-charge to participants in balcony garden trainings and workshops. If this campaign is successful I will reprint the book by the thousands and give it the distribution it deserves!
