America: Tattered Glory is a long hard look in the mirror, to see the reflection of the greatest nation of earth. As we race towards another presidential election, many of the hard questions remain unanswered. What are we going to do about the serious, and often undiscussed, issues facing our country?
This book looks at some of those issues, over a wide range of topics. From the decaying education system to the fact that 1 in 4 American women will be raped or sexually assaulted over the course of their life time. From the billions of dollar we spend on a huge military, which we use to defend other people’s borders, to the fact that there is no accountability for our money. Civil Rights, guns, immigration, The Constitution, and America as a Christian nation are all examined.
This is a hard to read book because it takes a “hold no punches” look at reality. The reality that the Land of the Free is now anything but.
My name is Don Quinn, and I live in Maryland with my wife and children. From the sanctuary that we call home, we run a small content marketing company to pay the bills and dabble in politics and humanitarian causes to make a small difference in the world.
Last year I decided to run for State Senate in Maryland. Having moved to the state a couple of years ago from Washington (State), we knew hardly anyone and had no idea what we were getting into but felt very strongly that regular people were needed to make a positive difference. In a minuscule sense we were a tiny reflection of the reason why so many people are supporting non-political candidates. We raised hardly any money which meant that we got outspent something like 300 to 1, made a few great connections, and came within 2% of defeating a 30 year incumbent. But that was just the beginning.
Over the course of running for election, I discovered how much I did not know about the problems facing our country. And so when the dust settled, I decided to research more of the issues and write down what I discovered. With the aim of promoting a more positive and healthy approach to politics, I initially planned on calling this book “Planting the Mustard Seed”, but that was before I truly dived into the issues. What I found in my year of research shocked, saddened, and terrified me. What is most frightening is the fact that I considered myself well-read and politically aware.
As the layers around issues like Civil Rights, Women’s Rights, The National Debt, and Education were peeled away, what I saw prompted me to change course and America: Tattered Glory was born. The book is not intended to be easy reading, the subjects it addresses are complex and complicated. At its core though, the book seeks to look at the world through the eyes of an everyday American, one that has woken up in a brutal reality where we are no longer the “land of the free”. Through the years, our freedom and our rights have been stripped away, our treasure has disappeared in to a vast pit of fuzzy math, and our future is being dumbed down before our own eyes. A blossoming police state, constitutional free zones, and a land that went from “I have a dream” to “I can’t breathe”, are all topics that found their way into America: Tattered Glory.
When I finished the book I was left seething. This is a book that will anger you, it will startle you, and hopefully it will galvanize you into action. The more people wake up, the more likely it is that we can bring about real change. I believe that America’s best days are ahead of us, but only if we are willing to face reality. And the reality is that our greatest glory lies in tatters. I ask that you read the book and join me in spreading the message by having a friend read it after you are done.
All the funds we raise will go towards distributing, marketing, and selling the book. My goal is to eventually take this to as many people around the country, and the world, as possible so all of your support is greatly appreciated.
We are also talking about turning the book into a documentary, but that is another campaign for another day :)
Risks and challenges
The largest potential challenge with America: Tattered Glory, as with any book, is that people will not read it. I fully anticipate people to have an opposing point of view to some of the issues addressed, and how they are addressed, but even in that case it would mean that people are reading the book. My goal is to get this into as many distribution channels as possible, use the experience of running a campaign, and the tools I have as the owner of a small marketing company to promote it as much as possible.
Would I love to have an agent and a publicist? Sure. At the moment though both of those are my lovely wife unless we raise a ton of support.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
